Parking on IU campus is a nightmare. You have to park at the stadium which is far away from everything, the fee is ridiculous, and you have to move it every time there is a game and pay to park it somewhere else. He’s smart to not take a car.

As a recent college graduate, My best advice for new students would be to get involved on campus as much as possible so you can start building up your resume and making connections with people. Plus at some schools, certain clubs might give you priority registration which gives you the opportunity to register for classes early! Best of luck to your nephews Mike!

Agree with this. You don't want to be rushing your senior year to get connections and everything done (ie. Internships). Have fun and don't be afraid to get involved in the college community! @@donoibagere5057 You've got a point. I always put my trust in the lecture notes because that's usually what the test was taken from. Unlike Mom, though, I never copied them over. I would study from my notes that looked like chicken scratch. I read the books, and that gave me depth, especially Math and Science proofs. But projects would always require field study techniques, so we did learn to use and figure academic - taught techniques in the field. (Organic Chemistry was in labs.) I used to spend fifteen attempt at the first math problem and each homework assignment. Same for the second problem. The rest of them seem to go smoothly, but the first two always screwed up my brain. The homework I was given really did help me learn what I needed, regardless of the struggle. .

Haha funny. My soon to be 18 yo son also just declined his grand parents offering him a car for his birthday. He's being smart. He's going to uni, he doesn't want to be working for car insurance and gas. He prioritizes his studies. He's also definitely not materialistic and just takes the train or rides his bike to go see his friends. Self worth and self esteem come from within, not from expensive cars or clothes

Don't take an 8am class. You think you can, but college is different. You'll end up running on maybe four hours of sleep a night. Talk to the teachers and other students, and make those connections. Lastly, make time for some self-care. College is a great time to learn many things about yourself and the world. You may be tempted to do everything, but taking time to replenish is so helpful in the long run

My brother is a Hoosier grad and IU is such a great school. Your nephew is going to love it. Highly recommend eating at Mother Bear's Pizza and getting cookies from Baked! They even deliver which can be bad for a college student looking for food at midnight lol. We also ate at the Village Deli for breakfast when visiting. All that to say, Bloomington has great food. And good luck and congrats to the nephew.

In uni now as a junior, honestly just make as many friends as you *need* for your sanity, but also be involved with clubs or a student oriented department and get involved. I Transferred from community college and this was my first semester and I afraid to feel isolated but found friends by regularly going to an office that I find commonality with people who hang out in it and I've branched out from there. Dorms can be hard and scary but it's an experience worth having because its the first time you have to deal with conflict that's unavoidable but also not with family. you have to be able to both take and receive criticism for how you live

I love this Uncle-Nephew relationship. Wish I could have a relationship like that, but I got social anxiety and I'm also super introverted irl. That's why that relationship advice is real. I'm attending a boarding school (not college, still too young for that lol) and trust me, that relationship advice is real. You get in, make everyone your friend. Your teacher, your whole year, the years above you (your seniors) and later on the years under you (your juniors). Trust me, it'll save you one day when you need it.

I snorted when the alcohol question came up. I teach college (not at IU) and was at IU for an event and walked off campus to meet friends. Some guys were playing beer pong in the front yard of their rented house at 3 pm and started yelling to me to come join them. I was at least 30 at the time and yelled "no thanks!" and started laughing. One of them said "why are you laughing?" I said back "I'm a professor!" I've never seen people duck so quickly. I've been back to Bloomington many times over the years, and three of my cousins went there. It's a big party school. Kelley School of Business will keep him pretty busy, though. Stay safe, man. I agree with a lot of the advice below: get involved, take care of yourself, go to class. Seriously, go to class.

This advice really depends where you go to school-I used every one of my textbooks, and often in class. I had to do reading summaries of most chapters, take quizzes over what I read, and make presentations with a small group over the information read in the last week. Plus, none of them were available online!

I'm trying to help my niece through chemistry right now and I have given her my 25 year old textbook many times. Trying to find the online textbook every time she needs to look up something is a hassle. I don't know if it is just her not keeping it available, but I only see access to it when she is using a homework module.

Have a great time at Bloomington! I was part of the bi-centennial class that graduated during lockdown. Nice to see they finished the bell tower. Also, tip! My favorite place to study was the library in the art museum because it's quiet, close to a cafe, and gets SO MUCH sunlight! Sunsets are beautiful there! Would highly recommend!

Go to the college library and, check out the book in the library, take pictures of the chapters you need. You don't have to buy textbooks unless, it's the book your professor wrote himself most probably your lab notebook. You don't need the extra expensive school materials just go to the dollar tree or local mom and pop stores and buy five subject note books for each subject to help you keep all your notes together.
