I don’t that’s necessarily what they’re trying to show here. Being uneducated on it doesn’t make you racist but most educated people on it will likely not be racist. Every racist I see tends to be very uneducated on other cultures and plays into stereotypes. I think they were trying to show that not everyone in this town is racist opposed to that everyone in this town is racist. It’s also more about their reactions to the questions and not how many they get right.

I think this video shows we shouldn't be sowing stereotypes and perhaps some of the divisions we create are only of our own perceptions. The morale. Don't judge a book a book by its cover or because someone else already described the cover and no one bothered to follow up. I couldn't get most of these questions. There is no distinction here between a town in Arkansas and its people and a town in California, Washington or Oregon.

@@nybergsgarage Well, our media and history only wants to talk about those who "did it bad". It's what you want to remember about US history that makes it today. A lot of people can go on about how Europeans came over and stole land, owned slaves and segregate the races. But, a lot of them came to be in the abolitionist movements, fight on the Union side of the Civil war, fight to end wars against the natives and land seizers and took part in the Civil Rights movement. It's only what people want to hear and remember about a country to make it what it is today. Especially with the white half of the country.

Honestly, people tend to be friendly wherever you go if you're friendly first. Southern Whites in particular are crucified by Hollywood as the world's most horrible people, but the truth is that any given group of white American southerners is not unlike any other ethnic/national group of anyone else. I remembered I was on a two week training in Texas. I went to a church for Sunday service (back then I was still religious). It was at Deep South, and the all white Baptist church congregation looked at me like I was some strange alien, and I heard them sort of whispering and wondering where I was from. They seemed asking some ushers to find me a Japanese Bible or something, but before long the service started as the organist played the first hymn, and the congregation stood up and started sing. I took the Baptist hymnal and found the hymn and sang along - and I could see them watched me in utter amazement because I could sing their hymns (I attended an Anglican school and sang Christian hyms for years). They talked with me for a while after the service and were curious to know where I came from. People don't become xenophobic or just racists, they were misled into hatred - the whole America must receive a lot more information about other places, instead of just watching Superbowl, NBA or baseball.

To be fair, if you travel into the heartland of China, which I have done, it’s much the same as this. I lived in China for six years and traveled a lot for my job. Although people are fairly knowledgeable about the USA, because they learn in school English starting in second grade (so they know English greetings), there’s extreme ignorance about Europe and Latin America. So many times I would find people that didn’t know what language was spoken in Mexico or Cuba or Argentina or Spain. They had never even heard of Spanish. They wouldn’t know the difference between Spanish, Italian and French. I also had teenage students who thought that London is the capital of the USA. I also met people who thought that the English language originated in the USA, not in England. I think the bigger a country is, and the more self-sufficient it is in providing its own entertainment/movies/songs/TV, the more ignorant it is of the outside world, especially if people don’t live in cosmopolitan cities that don’t get a lot of foreign visitors and workers. The people in Shanghai are much more internationally savvy than the people in Yinchuan. Same thing with the people who live in NYC and this people in this heartland town in the video.
@PerfectSense772 жыл бұрын
TBH, it's very understandable. Why would a rural Chinese person learn about the details of European or Latin American languages. The vast majority will never go to any of those places and learning about them won't be useful in any practical way to them.

people think calling out racist activities is going to solve the issue but it won't. Sure I think calling out actions that is wrong should be done but people are more likely to change their opinions and actions when they are exposed to other cultures in a fun and interactive way. More likely that not, some of these people may have gained new found interest in Asian culture which will make them less prone to actions that are seen as racist. Yelling at them would have just made them defensive of their old mindset. You don't want people to double down on bad behavior so negative reinforcement is generally a bad idea. Criticisms need to be much more targeted and considerate to be effective.

This was great. Thank you guys. At times being a person with an interest in Chinese language and culture in a place where it's not expected or normal is discouraging. These young women in front of the storefront, and the sister of that guy with the truck (and honestly, even him, given how open he was to correction about boba), and that one dude in the yellow Pac-Man t-shirt gave me some hope for rural America.

@@MARCBEA1 Did you know in America during the covid pandemic they attacked and killed elderly Asians (Chinese, Filipinos, Thais, Koreans, Japanese) in the streets? Take it easy that racist narrative, you think this all fun but you have no idea what real racism is. Besides, no Africans were killed in China. @@tbarry2011 this is another social engineering by the media. How many incidents were there against Asians? They use percentages like 100% increase but not actual raw numbers. Why? Because of the actual cases are low. 1 attack last year versus 2 this year is 100% increase. Other races also were attacked in the streets. The media is trying so hard to make Asians feel like victims.

Great video! But I think a few questions about Chinese history and some questions about Asian geography would have been good. Even politics or economics. For example which is the capital of China? Who was the most important emperor? Which is the most important Chinese company? or Who are the Uyghurs? What does the Republic of Taiwan represent for China?
