They're an extremely boring, generic, safe and popular band from Canada. The singers voice does one single thing and it's unpleasant to listen to. They became so ubiquitous in the 2000s that they are still the posterboys for "bad music" and the butt of many jokes. I personally cannot stand them, but it's becoming more popular to defend them.

Corey is one of my favorite vocalists just cause of the raw emotion, from Eyeless to Through Glass to Song #3 to Solway Firth. So much range over his career, in a non technical sense. Well said, i will turn 30 in december and i remember as a 10 year old kid my friend used to bump Slipknot and having a xxl poster pinned on his wall, i seen them and instantly judged them and never took a full listen until i was 25, and yes of course i was young egoistic and totally wrong, i love their music and i love how my musical taste expanded over the years. Best regards from europe austria

@@Lubenica224 Give yourself some credit, you weren't totally wrong; they branded themselves poorly to people who don't like aggro vocals and honestly had a mainstream divisive and mediocre rep in the 00'-10's. It was always angry boy music until Psychosocial came out and then it was pretty much okay to kind of like them. Doesn't change the music and I've enjoyed them since Iowa came out but that was the rep back then.

Hey! Do you mind going a little bit more in depth on how to create his clean sound during the chorus? (especially when he holds a note), it's like there is a very subtle distortion, not completely clean, and I just can't do that even though my falsecord screams are super on point. It seems especially hard for me above a certain note to create distortion even in mixed voice let alone control it to be so subtle like his.

If you're gonna do another video on slipknot, a good song off Iowa would be People=Shit since there are definitely some sections that sound pretty intense on the vocal chords or Heretic Anthem. Also if you wanna look at how he transitions between spoken voice and scream, Eyeless is a good song since the chorus (or hook really) very quickly transitions from spoken word to scream.

Random question, but as an amateur writer I couldn't help but notice your band name is Kardashev, which is one of two names used to describe the technology/advancement of a given species, was this done intentionally? I don't get why everyone is suggesting Slipknot songs older than Vol. 3 when Mark is here to analyze PROPER vocal technique. As gnarly as Corey sounded back then, those songs were all crash courses on how to NOT do harsh vocals. What I will suggest instead, is that Mark analyze something from All Hope Is Gone (for the love of fuck's sake, not Psychosocial or Snuff), and analyze Corey's proper vocal technique perfected. Gematria: The Killing Name or Gehenna would be perfect. I'm leaning more towards Gehenna for the weird, creepy clean vocals in that one.

I actually had a pretty bad lung injury, I tore a bunch of the pleura out (do not recommend, coughing up something that looks like that is terrifying tbh)& I was very close to going to hospital (the hospital here is somewhere you don't wanna go so I promised to be good at home) & it was tough cos I could barely walk from the kitchen to the lounge room without being winded. I thought I'll never sing again like if I was able to drive I was going to be happy. Very gently I was feeling better so I would just calmly sing a little. I started to measure myself with Bruce Dickinson & now my lungs are all healed & I can go full tilt again, maybe even stronger. But yeah being healthy is so important, I never expected to be able to cough so violently that I could really mess myself up but yay for strong muscles there?

Actually, he never injured his voice during Iowa cycle. People need to stop spewing this non-sense. Melissa Cross, the vocal coach that worked with him, said he came to her after he got sick and then injured his voice on a Vol. 3 tour. Even Corey himself said that Slipknot's Vol. 3 and Stone Sour's Come What(ever) May tours were very painful. The reason why he changed his scream for Vol. 3 was because he got sober and wanted to switch it up. Even though it is hard to find, there are some Vol. 3 live recordings where he occassionally does the Iowa scream. You never hear him getting hoarse during Iowa era, but he definitely struggles hard during Vol. 3. His AHIG voice is actually the Iowa scream after he probably suffered the vocal damage and is not adding some kind of pitch like he used to on first two albums. I think Chris Liepe did multitrack breakdown of Wait and Bleed where at one place you can hear him scream the same way he does now.
