My 103 had a good tick when I bought it, I changed to Amsoil and it went away, I was surprised. (It had H-D Dino in it when I bought it). My Evo however, oil had little to no affect so I installed rocker lockers and it quieted it down significantly, It prompted me to buy rocker lockers for the Twinkie, but I haven’t installed them yet since it’s still quiet.

I've done rocker-lockers on several of my twin cam bikes to varying degrees of effectiveness. While the 'tick' is clearly reduced in most application I've done, it is seldom completely eliminated but, it is definitely much better than without. I have actually also had success with experimenting with oils and oil flow, basically landed on two additional solution that almost completely eliminate the valve train noises when coupled with rocker-lockers upgrade - I always install the Axtell's Oil By-pass upgrade which doubles oil flow resulting in significant improved oil pressure and volume to the top of the heads In addition, I've landed on using Harley's SAE 60 non-synthetic oil. It's a special order but, it's now the only oil I have used for nearly a decade now.

This is a great video with much needed info. I am a new rider, bought a 95 Sportster XLH 883 and soon became worried about the tick. It got louder and louder after taking a leisurely ride. I changed the engine and primary oil using Mobil1 synthetic 20w50 thinking that would help... it did not. Then I learned from the previous owner he always used conventional oil... so, now I'm draining the syn and trying the conventional (Castrol Go 4T 20W50). I really hope this works, for some the ticking may be music to their ears (and I understand that) but it takes away from the joy and peace of mind running down the road for me. If this doesn't work, I guess I will invest in that Rocker Locker... thanks so much for making this video!!!

Yes, when I first bought my Harley way back in 2001 I thought that Harleys just made that clickity clackitiy noise. Everyone said the same thing. Then at about 500 miles when the rings seated I changed out the oil to castrol syntec 20W50 car oil. I cranked up the bike and low and behold no upper engine noise. Could not hear a thing but smooth operation. Ran good multi-viscosity car oil ever since without a problem. Took it to the dealer one time and they even complimented on the sound of the engine and how smooth it sounded. They asked me how and I said "ancient Chinese secret". LOL! Multi-viscosity is the way to go for engines because it provides good thin oil lubrication on cold engines and you have practically instant oil pressure as thin oils pump way better than thick oils. If you like to run motorcycle oil AMSOIL, or extended performance Mobil.

A little known fact is the regular Dino oil from Harley is the best for quieting down the engine. It is specifically made (not by HD) for air cooled engines that see a lot of heat. Do not add any additives, there is already a unique additive package in the oil as specified by HD. It is only for the engine on your bike, so it is not compromised in anyway to be used for everything in general. Change oil every 5000 miles even for synthetics. Synthetic oil is still subjected to the combustion contaminates as Dino oil. Next best option is Diesel engine oil.

I own a 2020 FXST with the 107 M8. Bought it new and the engine was, to me, WAY to noisy mechanically. Went through the first oil change with HD Syn 3 20W50 oil as recommended. WAY to much noise for me. Sounded to me like piston slap. The next change I went to Mobil 1, 20W50 full synthetic oil. The improvement was unbelievable. The engine is now mechanically as quiet as any motorcycle I have ever owned. Won't use anything else.

Great video! Zippers has PDF on how to check the tolerances in the rockers loose or worn tolerances can make the ticks worse. Rocker Lockers help tighten up the tolerance and certain oils can definitely help. I found that increased oil pressure in my Twin Cam, semi adjustable push rods adjusted correctly with the Woods Offset Rocker Box eliminated all my top end noise.

I installed RLers on my ‘05 Dyna LowRider while I was changing the cam chest. I had noticed a tick/tick sound coming from the top end, but assumed it was usual valve train noise. The air cooled mills are noisy engines, this to be expected since there’s no water jackets and looser tolerances. While I had the top end off, I installed the RLers. When everything was buttoned up, the top end was much quieter. In short, RLers did work as promised and at $25, it was a bargain!
@mmcclen9
@mmcclen9 3 жыл бұрын
I have used RL's on three twin cams with no complaints. I run the Wood TW-6H cam in several bike and discovered the steep ramps cause the rocker arms to slide on the shaft when unloading. This results in the rocker arm hitting the support plate - making the ticking sound. HD is quite generous with the end play clearance., from about .005 to .020+ (just guessing, the shop manual is in the garage). I've used rocker arm shims for a shovelhead to reduce the end play to .010 or slightly less. This along with RL's has made the ticking tolerable . Measure the rocker arm end play with the valve fully open and under max side load. Place the shim on the non-load end of the rocker arm. I use .010 shims and so far no problems - 65K on the clock.
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
Wood cams make power but like you mentioned the ramp angle are steep. Lol they can and usually do make the valve train noisy, which is to be expected and about the only complaint I've ever got about them.

Do you have a sample of the noise before you shimmed the rockers? I’m running Woods 999-6A and the motor is very noisy. It supposedly has rocker lockers installed when the work was done.
@bernicemcclenahen4510
@bernicemcclenahen4510 3 жыл бұрын
@@Dixifrog I don't have noise samples, sorry. This fix I found on an HD forum I believe. The reason I believe it works is the manual calls for a 0.003 - 0.013 end clearance when new, and then goes on to say replace parts when its 0.025. That's a big gap. The TC push rods are angled slightly and push the rocker to one side or the other when opening the valve, thus end gap should be measured with the valve open - the side with gap is the non-load side of the rocker. Typically, I've found the gaps 0.015 or more, so I just add a 0.010 shovelhead shim on the non-load side to reduce the gap. Sometime the rocker support is a little tweeked when not torqued down and you need to fight it a bit to get the shim in. Once reinstalled and tightened down the end play should be rechecked. Atleast now I can hear the Reinhart's, and blame any ticking on the valves closing. Overall the job is not too hard, just a little time consuming - with taking measurements and readjusting the pushrods. Good luck.

I just put the RL's on my twin cam. I pressed them in with a mandrel made on a lathe. Since the rocker box is a cast part the bolt bore is tapered from two directions and has casting flash in there. This flash collapsed the RL's. If you install as per instructions with the bolts and backing nut this will probably be avoided to a degree. I suspect that the bolt will be a PITA to remove if the casting flash collapses the RL. Also make sure that the RL's are about .06" below flush to accommodate the fillet between the shank and head of the bolt. It seems quieter now but i's hard to tell. Like you said these engines make noise everywhere. Mine had a wicked whine which was masking a lot of the tick. Incidentally the whine was from the worn out cam chain tensioners. I replaced those and now I can hear the valvetrain but it's nothing that alarming. I use the 20-50 SYN3 oil. I'm going to try the Amsoil next.

I do not have a PhD in business, but I cannot imagine for even a minute that the reputational damage that all these “cost savings” have done to the company in no way makes up for the pennies or few dollars per unit “saved” when bean counters overrule engineering. In either case, it’s nothing short of a disgrace that they did it, and now continue to do it (M8). The vibration of the engines on most Harleys including mine is enough to loosen certain bolts over time. For me it's the ones that fasten the split tanks on the top by the neck. Had to put extra washers and spacers in there to stop the tanks from vibrating too much but now even with loctite they eventually come loose. Never ending.

I have a 2000 FLSTC that I bought with 11k miles on it. It had a little tick on the front cylinder. I wanted to replace the cam chain tensioners, regardless of wear, because 23 year old plastic. Since I was going to have it apart anyway, I checked the rocker shafts and they were not loose and showed no signs of being the culprit. IE they weren't loose, the bolts showed no witness marks from the shafts tapping them and the cutouts were not up against the bolts. I installed the rocker lockers anyway, just in case I missed something, and put the engine back together. I filled it with Amsoil. (I assume it had whatever the dealer uses in it, as it had just had a documented 3 hole change before I bought it.) The tick is now worse! I guess I will try a different brand of oil and see if that makes a difference, but I think I see lifters and adjustable pushrods in the near future. If I could afford it, I would put a gear drive cam kit in it,(pinion shaft is .002) along with the lifter kit and be done with the engineering shortcomings of my year twin cam (at least until the compensator needs replaced) but I'm an old guy on fixed income so all that will have to wait until I go back to work to stack up a little money next winter. Right now, summer is here and the road calls.

I recently installed a similar product called “Rock Out”. Same idea. Uses the brass shims like Rocker Locker. It took at least 1/2 of the top end “tick” out. I also switched to Amsoil, hoping that it would eliminate a bit more of the noise. So, bottom line, I still have some of the annoying tick, but now only in the 2,000-2,300 RPM range. So, still annoying, but MUCH better. I might investigate another brand of oil, but I do like the Amsoil product.
@MegaCusco
@MegaCusco 3 жыл бұрын
You can take care of the noise by shimming the rocker arms end play. I think the spec is .003 to .013" or so... If they have .010-.015 end play they will click. You can verify this with the rocker cover removed and push pull on the rockers in valve closed position. You will hear it click.
@terrywentz4629
@terrywentz4629 3 жыл бұрын
@@MegaCusco Yes. After shimming the bolts I noticed there was still some end-play, but only on one rocker arm. I could still hear it click. So, I’m pretty sure you are right about the remaining noise. I’m not sure how to safely shim that end-play out. I don’t want to put something in there that will end up contaminating the whole engine. Have you done it before? I have even considered just buying a new rocker arm but might end up with more noise again and just end up chasing another problem.

Yeah, I tried them. I have the woods TW-9-6 I sent my heads out to branch and O’Keefe. They did a really great job won’t fit a stock. They recommended those and I really good for one 110 , what is 10 to one compression I didn’t wanna go crazy with the compression it’s 120 foot pounds and the same torque. I put those rocker lockers in there didn’t help, but that is one noise engine really runs good. I have a big radio in my bike. but as you know, if you try to make too much power out of these, it takes dependability away. And I put a lot of miles on the highway 2 up and heavy it goes. They said it’s the overlap on the exhaust and intake. I don’t know damn good cams if you don’t mind the noise. The rocker lockers did not help this. I think the normal stuff. so any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I know you’re a big wood guy. I didn’t put roller rocker arms so it’s not hitting the rocker cover. But it’s just a front cylinder isn’t hurting anything. I don’t think it just pretty noisy, but it’s a twin cam.
