Just ordered a new Hertzog. Born and raised in Winnipeg. Two times seeing Big Sugar, both times the loudest shows I've ever seen. And that's okay by me.

Oh! it's that easy! :) Thank you for taking the time. I have been wanting to know the secret since I first heard Big Sugar. I knew your love for Garnet and I've heard you say there's no big secret, but your explanation/demonstration really clears it up. Love it!!

Really loving this video. I love the wicked colors of those two Herzog's. This was a really interesting video, especially hearing your philosophy behind your guitar tone, the part where you were explaining how you like a clean amp after the Herzog. It would be awesome if you could talk about some of your albums, especially Hemi Vision and Heated, and talk about some of the approaches your took to recording and producing those albums. Like take a specific song like say, "Joe Louis" and talk about your setups for that song, medium it was recorded on (I know tape because I can hear the print through on "Rolling Pin"), but what gear was used, mic placement on guitar cabs, approach to producing, mastering, etc etc. Also, would be interesting to hear you talk about different types of speakers that you like to use in your cabs, or anything to do with recording philosophy as well. There is so much you could talk about in these videos, honestly I think it is just wonderful that your talking the time to just chill out in your studio, low key, and talk about stuff. Any topic is going to be interesting. Thanks for doing this, always a treat, and big up from O town Canada, holding it down up north, but also wishing our neighbors down south good health and safety, hard times for all, but hopefully will be united again in music.

Fun fact: Lenny Kravitz covered the Guess Who classic "American Woman" Randy Bachman asked him why he didn't use the original guitar solo. Kravitz replied that he just couldn't find the tone, and it was such a big part of the original solo, so he decided to wing it instead. The amp and effects used by Randy on the original recording, were by Garnett, of course. No Garnett stores in L.A.? Pity.

Once again, great Video Gordie! Beautiful tones! There is a Garnet Session Man out here in Vancouver in excellent condition, I have wanted to try it out, but slowed down obviously by Covid. By any chance do you know anything about the Session Mans? Have used for the past 20 years, Fender Vibro King, a Dual Professional and a Pro Reverb.. If GJ doesn't answer, anyone on here know anything about the Session Man? Thanks

Interesting bit about the tone knob. I have a Herzog reissue (signed by Gar) with a switch instead of a knob. Basically useless with it off. Dunno maybe it does something different plugged into the power section of an SVT!

Very cool. When did you start using a slide and finger and thumb picks and who influenced you to do so?
@BigSugarBand

I was using the finger picks for banjo, acoustic, slide guitar, steel guitar. At a point somewhere around 94-95 I just put them on and left them on.

"The Garnet amp was something [producer] Bob Rock brought in for me to use. I said, 'This sounds like crap!' But Bob liked it because it sounded real trashy. I used it mostly for low-end stuff. "Originally, I was using Mesa/Boogie amps for most of the low-end stuff, and that’s all I wanted to use, but Bob thought the Garnet would make for a nice blend. At first, I didn’t think so - I really didn’t like its sound at all; it was just so horrid. But in the end, Bob was right. The Mesa and the Garnet work well when mixed together. I never owned the amp, though. It was always Bob’s." Mick Mars

The tone control comes in very handy when using it with bass. It can be tuned so the distortion doesn’t gobble up all the bottom.

I got one of the new ones made a couple years back but still am chasing the rich harmonics and almost fuzzed out tone he gets in this vid. Maybe I’m just not pushing it hard and maybe not loud enough. I can actually get closer with fractal 4 knob tube driver into a super clean amp.
