8:50 we all know that look. Eyes wide, staring at the opposite side of the board, trying so hard to somehow telekenetically make your opponent not make that move.

@@vinodvenkatesan The guy refusing handshake is Ivan Cheparinov (Bulgarian Chess GM) I just digged a bit more about it. After the incident Arbiter was called by short and Nigel Short was declared a win by forfeit. Later the authority overthrew it as a second chance to Cheparinov and allowed a replay match the next day. Short won that game.

That first clip is funny. If i'm not mistaken, talking out loud like that and annoying your opponent is not legal. Hikaru's opponent could have called for an arbiter to complain, and he would have gained enough time to win the endgame :P

1:09 anyone know who the guy is? Poor girl. Only thing she didn't want was to lose his respect. Well, honey, he has to HAVE respect before he can ever lose it. Which he clearly does not. GG! He will forever hold a grudge. Which means you now control him. You are his master.

@@Alan-cm7ye It was indeed. And although I think he turned out to be right that Sofia would not beat him again, her younger sister Judit more than defended the family honor against Korchnoi, first drawing with him in blitz aged merely 13, and earning the first of her five victories over him in classical aged just 15.

@vibovitold
@vibovitold Жыл бұрын
if you have to ask "anyone know who the guy is?" about Korchnoi, it tells me you don't know much about chess history :) and in that case what's the point of making bombastic statements like "Which means you now control him. You are his master.". it seems kind of stupid really as for the situation itself - nah, there had been more to it. i only recall it vaguely now, but i believe there had been some beef between them. there were even accusations that Sofia (or another one of the Polgars?) was hinting the right move to Korchnoi's opponent in some game before? i remember reading about this but don't quote me on that, because i honestly can't remember the specifics. however, i'm 100% certain that there was more to this than what the clip shows, and the undertone of her remarks after the game wasn't so innocent. i'm not claiming that Korchnoi was right overall (even in case if he was, he could have been more classy about it, sure) BUT the situation wasn't as clear as people think. plus, with all due respect, no matter how cranky or unpleasant old Korchnoi was... come on, Sofia Polgar as his "master"? :))) seriously? someone of Karpov's calibre could have been Korchnoi's nemesis. ok. ...but not Sofia Polgar, whose accomplishments - while certainly impressive - are truly minuscule in comparison with Korchnoi's status and career. beating Korchnoi who was already well into his 60s in a blitz game will remain one of the highlights of her career. it won't even make a footnote in Korchnoi's professional biography. "just because you shot Jesse James, don't make you Jesse James"

@@vinchinzo594 When a pawn (weakest piece) gets to the other side of the board (opponent's side) it becomes a Queen ( the strongest piece) for practical matters even though you can choose any other one... Because of the time scramble, Hikaru's opponent takes the queen in advance hoping to promote soon but that's just something rude and impolite to do. Hikaru was mad lol. Always take the opponent's queen just when you are actually promoting
