Go out and get a violin made from a very good luthier today. It might cost more than a used SUV, but less than a home , and sound and play as well as a 300 yr old strad. It's crazy these musicians get it in their heads they must have these instruments valued at millions. They are after all, only wood till somebody makes them sing.

The sad part is that this documentary is that 3 years later Dietmar Machold himself was exposed. Oh the irony that they interviewed him for this.

In 1961 I was offered use of the Bass of Spain Stradivari cello for a performance of the Dvorak concerto. The owner of the instrument required me to use the gut strings which were on the instrument, and I had 5 days to become acclimated with the instrument. Regretfully, I refused that kind offer in favor of my instrument, which was a high quality modern cello with steel A and D strings and silver wrapped G and C strings. Possibly a mistake of youth.

I bet the museum workers have secretly played the glass encased Strad Seems silly and snobbish to demand it not be played. It would be like donating a Michaelangelo painting with the requirement of hanging it facing the wall!

We have the technology to CT scan these instruments down to the micron level to determine their endomorphologies. It is the carving of the inside plates of the violin that makes them special. This is the least known thing about them.

If I were to live in a world where the instruments of Guarneri and Stradivarius weren't so highly regarded with auctions and entire industries around them I would be a lot happier.

If you have a maximum of a thousand of anything in this world, then the prices go up. Add to that 300 years of maintenance work and hey presto! For you and me... just buy a 100 year old one.

Chuck Missler title brought me here. Stayed for the perspective. I think propping up these instruments as a sacred cow is a lesson in narcissism. These musicians believe THEY deserve to play an exclusive instrument. Most other musicians own various instruments such as a jazz trumpet vs a classical one. Leave the fiddles alone, they are part of history for everyone to enjoy.

24:59 "I don't care who you are, anyone who has the privilege of playing a great Strad, um, must see it as a privilege. You know, they can't expect to play them for life." Uuhhhhh..... what about Maxim Vengerov and Joshua Bell who have bought their Strads for life? There must be a couple of others who have too. It's extremely rare, however, possible for a world-class musician to own their own Strad.

+Jan Viljoen that is actually a rather biased test. Think about this: say you compare at least 3 violins. You can compare the first 2 violins but after the second one is played, do you REALLY remember how the first violin sounded actually without bias on how "good" or "bad" it sounded compared to the second? Psychologically, impossible. And also, it is the history and the perfection of the craftsmanship of these instruments that are special. These instruments have NEVER been improved dramatically since those instruments came out. Hence, they are the perfect instruments and are only copied and duplicated but never improved on.

lots of fake "Strads" and "Guarneris" out there, with even more spurious "Certfications of Authenticity"--some by very famous and 'reputable' dealers/authorities. Also many that have been "restored" beyond recognition. There are also many concert fine violins of this period or equal tone quality by makers such as Tononi, Ruggieri, Bergonzi, Tecchler, Gofriller etc, etc.

Such elitist crap. I very much suspect that any professional player could find an affordable handmade instrument that was close to the playability and sound of these mega buck antiques if they took the time to find one. This is all about marketing investments for the mega rich and has nothing to do with music. It's also about rich white men sitting in their gaudy mansions on their hideous thrones inviting musicians to play for them. Just as it was when these instruments were made. How ironic.
