Jayson was the Grand Winner of the Voice Philippines Season 2. He used to work as a telegram singer where you can hire him to serenade someone.

Telegram singer is an appropriate idiom for explaining it in English, but the phenomenon in the Philippines goes back to before telegrams were a thing. When a young man courts a girl by serenading outside her window, he isn't always the singer, he might have people with him to do the singing and the guitar. He might be the one to recite poetry, though.

Yes, Jaya had a career here in the US back in the late 80s. She was part of the “freestyle” music scene and collaborated with Stevie B, a legend in freestyle music! JR also is from the US, growing up in LA. He left for the Philippines in his 20s to chase his musical dreams, where he’s been ever since. The guitarist, Makoy Portado is KZ’s close friend and collaborator on many of her “iconic” hits! Makoy is the guitarist in KZ’s iconic “Say Something” performance on Singer 2018.

JR grew up in the US but moved to the Philippines when his (and his band’s) music submitted to a producer was initially liked by the producer but later on rejected when the producer learned he is Asian. jaya, as you said, was in the US before she found her singing career in the Philippines. I believe she is now back in the US when pandemic hit and ABS-CBN was closed (bec of issues related to politics and other legal matters). jason was the winner for 2nd Season, the Voice Philippines I am thankful you found our gems at last, and thank you for your intelligent reactions (intelligent bec you have the technical knowledge and experience that go with your spoken comments about our music and our talents). Jaya is one of the singers who has a very wide range that she can hold her own in the low range while her duet partners deal with the high parts. She made singing low notes cool and she can still go to the high notes when she wanted no problem.

I love your reaction! I’m glad you reacted to this and yeah, this kind of music is wanted in the Philippines. We are big on family and we grew up listening to the music of our parents so this type of music kind of never dies. Artists in the Philippines like “copying” the original artist perfectly enough to make the song their own when they finally do the covers. And when they make it their own, they do the song in these complicated arrangements. The more difficult the better 😂 We love music. And music is also kind of our refuge for all the hardships we experience as a people. Thank you again for reacting to this!

There is a weekly (Sundays) noontime variety musical show which featured a segment called "Soul Sessions" before. The show was called ASAP (All-out Sundays Afternoon Presentation). It has been reformatted and the segment is no longer running. "Soul Sessions" ran from 2018-2020. It featured Jay-R, Kyla, KZ Tandingan, Daryl Ong and Jason Dy.
