Hey, AC. I'd like to point out some interesting notes. The massive UP SD70M roster was inspired by, and spec'd to, the original 24 that Southern Pacific had. On top of that, the largest single model order ever placed-- for SD70M's -- was done in October of 1999 (hard to believe it's been that long already.) The second thing worth mentioning: EMD's safety cab. They first appeared on the Centennial locomotives as part of a wide ranging experiment for future ideas/concepts EMD was working on. Oddly enough, the design went through the changes from the original "Tear-drop style" on the Centennials, to the "Tri-clops" on the CP Red-barns and early SD60M's, then back to the "Tear-drop style" on the SD60M's, SD70M's, MAC's, and 75's. (Sheesh, it's nuts trying to keep up sometimes on certain features. I sometimes get dizzy time-lining these things. )

The flared radiator SD70Ms were also built to be Tier 1 compliant. Hence, the reason for the split cooling and flared radiators. Also, the notch cab is considered to be "Phase 2.5" or "Phase 3", while the non-notched cab units with flared radiators are "Phase 2". It's confusing, I know! Lol some Phase 1 SD70M's are referred to as "Phase 1.5" or "Phase 2" because they have updated electronics and controls, but still retain their non-flared radiator appearance.

Indian railways have like 1700 of emd 710 powered locomotives and i just hear them everywhere everyday. Diesel electrics have the best sound and smell no matter how heavy or fast electrics can pull. i am not against electric locomotives.. but if i have to pick between a "12000hp" alstom vs 6000hp ge i would pick the ge twice 😂.

Gotta be honest, in my opnion, a EMD unit without the flared dynamic brake resistances feels weird. Its not that I dont like them, its more that they dont have the same feel. Maybe I've been around 40-2 too much.

Too bad, I loved seeing the M-2 lead trains, which by the time I started train watching in 2017, was rare and far between. They had beautiful sounding horns, too. Yea I know, go ahead and call me a foamer if you must.
@hakeemsd70m4 жыл бұрын
The SD70M-2 didn't constantly blow turbos like the ES40DCs did when they were new and still under warranty.
@tremblingone42694 жыл бұрын
@@hakeemsd70m Yes. GE turbos have never had the reliability of the EMD's, yet the hybrid EMD turbo is a different animal. Takes much longer to change than the GE's. My disdain over the M-2 is for putting DC motors under a unit designed for AC motors. Not fun to work on. Oh, and a DC output alternator where a 3 phase AC output alternator was meant to be.
