Is this the best hike at Glacier National Park??? You decide!
We’re Matt and Logan. We travel full-time in our 5th wheel camper on a mission to see every state, national park, national monument, and everything in between! Including all of you on this journey is out greatest wish. Subscribe to witness all the wonders this world has to offer.
Today we are taking you along with us to Grinnell Glacier Trail located in Glacier National Park. We are letting you in on all details of this hike including directions to the trailhead, how to navigate the trail, and what to expect along the way. We hope this motivates you to get out there and try one of the most awe-inspiring hikes and THE BEST hike in Glacier National Park.
For those of you who are unable to complete such a trek, we hope that this video gives you a first-hand encounter of the hike and some of the views that you would see along the way. Our goal is to immerse you in this trail. We don’t want you to miss out on THE BEST hike at Glacier National Park.
Information about the trail:
Grinnell Glacier Trail located in Glacier National Park is a 10-mile hike with an elevation gain of 2,047 feet. When we hiked the trail, we were unable to hike the entire 10 miles as the trail was closed due to hazardous conditions around the 3-mile mark.
Directions to the trailhead:
Grinnell Glacier Trailhead
Many Glacier Entrance
Coordinates: 48.79721, -113.66843
Important information:
Reservations ARE required to enter Many Glacier Entrance between July 1 to September 8, 2024 between 6 am and 3 pm!
Trail navigation:
• Enter the park at the Many Glacier Entrance - The road back to the car park is rough and is composed primarily of gravel with potholes, but overall, any vehicle should be able to access it.
• You will begin the hike on Swiftcurrent Lake Trail where you will get great views of Swiftcurrent Lake on your left. On this trail you will see another trail going towards to right that will say North Shore Josephine Lake Trail and Grinnell Glacier Trail - take this trail and continue.
• You’ll eventually come up on Lake Josephine on the left and you will continue on this trail with beautiful views of the lake. Eventually you will come to a fork where you can take a left and continue on North Shore Josephine Lake Trail or continue straight on Grinnell Glacier Trail. Continue on Grinnell Glacier Trail - at this point the incline begins getting more intense and will stay consistent until you reach the end of the trail.
• Once we completed Grinnell Glacier Trail we headed back down the mountain - eventually you will come back to the fork in the trail where you will have two options. If you want to finish up, you will want to continue straight and head back the way you came - if you want a longer hike with even more breathtaking views you will want to take a right at the sign that directs you to Lake Josephine taking North Shore Lake Josephine Trail.
• Follow North Shore Lake Josephine Trail until you reach the intersection for Grinnell Lake Trail which will be towards the right. We highly recommend taking this trail as you will get an amazing/up close view of Grinnell Lake.
• While we decided to trek this hike after the Grinnell Glacier Trail, you can also elect to take a scenic boat ride from the Many Glacier Lodge which will drop you off less than 100 feet from this trail. If you elect to take the boat, your total hiking for the day could be just under 2 miles with mild elevation changes if you are able to obtain parking by the lodge. If you decide not to do the boat ride the total length of the trail is 6.9 miles to Grinnell Lake.
• On the way out you will proceed to the original intersection that you took for Grinnell Lake Trail where you will have the option to go back towards Grinnell Glacier Trail and continue back towards the start of the hike or you can continue straight taking South Shore Josephine Lake trail around the lake. We opted for the South Shore trail because we wanted to see some new sights and even better - there was no one on the trail. I will say this area is much more wooded than the other side of the lake and you have very limited views from this side.
• You’ll continue this trail and eventually come across another fork where you can continue straight on the trail or take a left on Swiftcurrent Cut Off trail - take this trail. While on this trail you will once again have the option to go straight or take a left over a cute little wooden bridge - take the left and it will put you back out onto Swiftcurrent Lake Trail where you’ll take a left and continue around until you get back to the parking lot.
