A couple things really stood out to me in this, one is the m11 and your use of it, these photos are incredible and the m11 has been something I’ve put on my wish list recently. The user experience just seems amazing. Second, I shot a lot in harsh outdoor lighting today, and the tips, though simple, were super helpful to me and made them go way better, thank you for this.

Was so curious as to how you shoot the videos and interesting that this one was done by yourself. Respect for all the effort put into the video and story telling and then the photos too.

It’s challenging and you constantly have to think to setup a camera while you’re doing things, but the Pocket3 has made it 1000x easier when I’m just walking or talking, though I still use the SIII for big landscapes and static “talking” shots like I did at Lake McDonald and sunrise at Wild Goose Island Overlook, etc.

Your statement about compromising on equipment is so true. Like you I had a large number of different Sony lenses and now only own the M11-P with a Summilux 50 and a Summicron 28. That's all I really need and I'm very happy with this setup.

Dave, one of my very favorite videos. The combination of shooting, images and commentary is perfection! Driving while doing the commentary is probably scarier than walking and worrying about bear! I have found the M is perfect for talking amazing images and still being present in the landscape. I think it is the simplicity of the controls. Just don't have to think about the gear and can devote more bandwidth to what is happening around you. Thanks for the joy I get in watching your videos!

Really enjoyed this one. I don’t watch YT a ton but I’ve for sure seen a lot of videos from top photo guys on the tube and I honestly feel like they all lack compared to what you put out. For example, if one were to truly sit and listen to your words in this video and enjoy the visuals they could legit walk away with an entirely new outlook on life as well as their craft. Nobody else is raising the bar that high, the value within your videos is second to none. Well done man. 🙏🏻

I always enjoy your videos. My wife and I travel a lot, some 70 countries to date, and I purchased an m11p this years (wanted a Leica since I was young) because I got tired of lugging my Sony a7rv all around the globe and I never even questioned being able to use it for landscape even though I'm mostly a street photographer. So thanks for confirming my beliefs, I can't wait to give this little gem of a camera a go in all types of situations around the world. Keep up the great work, your videos are always very informative. And I know this may sound odd but, when people ask me "why Leica", I tell them that my m11p is my meditative camera because it helps me to slow down, take a deep breath, and really think more about what I'm shooting and how I'm shooting. I now look at my Sony a7rv as more of a drive-by camera, because in my travels I kinda treated many shots as drive-by shots with less thought about what I was really wanting out of the shot. Both serve a purpose though, just different.

Every time I watch one of your videos I get that much closer to buying an M11. Only thing stopping me is my Q3 that has AF that is almost a complete necessity given how much I photograph my daughter.

What made me switch from a M11 to a Q is the solid weather resistance. My best pictures are taken during light rain and relatively low light so decent sealing and OIS are the way. I’d love an analog M some day though

While Leica doesn’t officially say this and we also know it’s not weather sealed, I shoot in rain, snow, and all sorts of weather and never have issues. Google Leica M and rain and you’ll see most people say the same thing. Yes, it’s a risk, but nearly everyone I know has ever had an issues. One person told me their sensor literally had ice form on it and just waited for it to thaw out and it was back to normal haha

Leica cameras love the sky meter trick. Especially before the M11 when they were metering against the closed shutter. As long as you meter for the highlight when needed, or the proper grey when shooting into the shadows, the exposure is literally never wrong. I shot some 400 pictures today around NYC. Not a single one with any issues. And I'm on grandpa M240. That self portrait came out PERFECT. That exact spot was the last time I truly had fun with my dad, skipping rocks across the perfectly clear water. Love glacier.

I dont get the meter trick. I used to shoot w a M240 but sold it due do lack of dynamic range. You telling me metering for highlights would have solved it? Also in manual mode? 🤌🏼🤌🏼

@@viktorpettersson7521 It depends. Some types of shooting rely on a very wide and flexible dynamic range. Sony (and others) are great for that workflow. The m240 is noisier than those modern BSI sensors and that noise shows up especially when low values are lifted too much.. but I simply don't push those limits with how I shoot. I rarely shoot manual these days. I shoot auto ISO and auto shutter, and gate the shutter at 1/500 (I shoot in NYC where it's super fast paced). I roll the shutter to a specific speed if I want to avoid the high noise of the 1/500 ss. Sometimes I stick to Sunny16, too. I should note I'm a daytime shooter and I treat the m240 like a film camera. For night shooting and massive editing stuff.. something like a Sony would be more appropriate.

First things First, I do enjoy your videos, Bravo . On shooting , anytime , anywhere .. I've done it my whole life. I could NEVER understand, the mentality of saying one can only shoot at sunrise or sunset.. ( Yes a NO Brainer there , lol ) But what is life , if we can't show it or capture it in all its light . Wish i had the time to get back out west, your area is beautiful. Nothing to take away from your abilities, but it perfect to photograph . Its like people that go to europe , greece , italy ..etc ... a blind person can take images its so beautiful. The biggest compliment i get , is when people tell me , I make our area look so beautifu, lol , Anyways , ALL THE BEST to you , Keep on Keeping on , I enjoy your Videos and you should be proud . Sometimes I far prefer a 35 or 50 panorama to a wide angle because it keeps the normal perspective but still captures the width of the scene. I was out in Montana this summer and could take literally any excuse to go back, those lakes are gorgeous.

Totally agree on the gear talk and that pressure that you need all these lenses. I have learned that all I really need is my 35mm and my M camera for almost everything. I stopped feeling that I am missing out on all these shots and just focused on what I can capture with that 35mm and the rest I just take into memory. I use the M for everything; landscape, bar hopping, concert photography, weddings, staged shoots, street, even wild life. I took a trip to Yosemite and took my at the time fuji kit with the 16, 35, 90 and I also had one of the zoom lenses. I walked away with that trip with a ton of great photos, but my memory of the trip is very dim beyond the photos. Constantly swapping lenses really took me out of the experience. You could argue that a zoom lens would be a better choice, but I still would do the same thing (different photos at all these difference lengths of the same subject). So now I just keep it simple. A small 35mm with the small M and when I am not taking photos its basically out of my way but still easy enough to carry anywhere when I feel inspired for a photo.

so relaxing Dave... I have a neat technique for doing pano's on my M11... If you can rotate the camera on the axis of the middle of the lens, instead of a wide sweep, as done in the video, you will get a better stitching with less curvature. I kind of take the mid point of the end of the lens, and the sensor(there are two white lines on top of the camera to show the sensor position) ..Usually this "nodal" point is just at the end of the focus ring on Leica glass. Also shooting vertical gives more latitude for cropping post. Your work is fantastic..

Have a M240 and have been coming to similar conclusions myself and more often than not the Canon 5D II which I love stays at home because it's too bulky.. Though I am thinking of getting a Lumix S5 to get a long lens to do wildlife. Could put my M and R lenses on there with adapters too.

I've been shooting landscapes with M cameras for years and my kit is a 28, 50, 90 with a polarizer and a small travel tripod, that's it. Where the M system falls down though, is for long exposures because there's a light leak at either the lens mount of the camera or all the lenses, not sure which. So you either have to use tape, or put a cloth or something over you camera. It's pretty annoying. I actually enjoy shooting midday because I like the strong directional light and a polarizer will make the skies a really beautiful, deep blue that I like a lot.

I rarely, if ever, use a tripod. Nearly all of these photos have focus at infinity at f/5.6, aperture priority at ISO64, shooting mostly at 1/250 or more because of the amount of light. If you’re having issues, make sure your lens is good, then set auto ISO and manually put your shutter at 2x focal length at minimum and see if that helps.

You are well over $25k just in the Leica kit , thier a KZbinr that only has a $50 film camera with a 50mm and a $16 Amazon tripod and I enjoy his videos/pic. It's like overlanding some people camp with $100k worth of gear other don't even past $500. A M11 is useless for a bird photographer, You just have to know what you need and what you don´t.
