This area is where the North Fork of the flathead river cuts through the mountains, a water gap. A lot of this area has been burned over by forest fires many years ago. Many fires occur where there is old growth that has not been harvested or thinned out. A lot of Montana is in prime condition to be burned because of lack of thinning and tree harvesting. Due to lack of funds for forest management and lawsuits to prevent logging. Glacier national park which is held in pristine conditions without logging has many forest fires every year. Many thousands of acres burned because of lack of management of the forests. This is just North of where we live and we have hiked here several times.
