You know that him being the dad is heavily implied in the first one right? Like I think it's a pretty common assumption at the time that it was his kid. I think the second was was 100% unnecessary and not that great, but that wasn't the issue.

We recently watched the original with the knowledge that Lucius was his father in the sequel, but did not see anywhere in the movie where it was implied.
