I wish Ridley Scott had displayed a modicum of curiosity about Caracalla and Geta as emperors. Almost zero resemblance to the emperors' personalities (as narrated in the sources) and their relationship to one another. And no Severan empresses. Why create a movie using historical personalities that don't actually interest you as personalities? The thing is, if Ridley Scott had embraced the actual period that he is ostensibly depicting, then the movie would have been far more interesting. Caracalla as narrated by Cassius Dio, the Historia Augusta and Herodian is a much more fascinating character than the Caligula rip-off in the movie. He scowls in all his portraits, he challenges Germanic kings to single combat, he creates his own revived version of the Spartiates, and he personally invades the Parthian Empire in imitation of Alexander the Great. The Caligula-esque depiction just feeds into the usual representation of 'bad emperors' as soft weaklings. And I feel kind of bad that Ridley Scott's unflattering depiction of Geta, a victim, will now dominate the public perception of him, insofar as the public was aware of him. Boo

On a technical note the cinematographer for Gladiator 2 came out and basically shat on Ridley Scott and his approach to filming this movie. Apparently he shot it with multiple cameras in order to get as much coverage as possible in the least amount of time, but as the guy said when you're filming multiple shots at once it's impossible to light any single one of them well. So it's not just a worse script, it's worse on almost every other level too.

Ridley hates helmets. In Gladiator2 right at the start, arrows flying everywhere Pedro Pascal rips his helmet off on the boat for no reason and then goes over the top of the wall. To be fair, I’m doing my thesis on Caligula and I honestly think he’s really misunderstood. AND! None of the sources say he actually made his horse (Incitatus) consul - he apparently just intended to do it. I personally think it was a huge ‘fuck you’ to the senate… because honestly, fuck the senate. Imagine having your dad die, then your family exiled and executed by your uncle, the emperor. Then, after like 10 years, being practically imprisoned on Capri with said uncle because he might want to name you as his successor and the senate supports all of this. Then there was a possible conspiracy by the senate to kill him in 39 CE. Like, bro, I’d be fucking insane too! Anyway, thanks for coming to my TedTalk 😊

So in Gladiator II, Maximus, was at home in Spain, fathering one child, while in Rome generaling and fathering a second child at the same time. And, when his wife and child die, he must revenge them, because he has so much love for the wife he left for a mistress in Rome, and his son he abandoned to raise his love child Lucius. But when dropping past the old homestead to drop off some child support, he sees they are dead, and the movie starts. But that's not what happened in Gladiator at all.
