"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next." Gladiator never needed a sequel, its a self contained movie

I just saw it. I went into it completely expecting everything that you described here in this video, but I’m happy to say that I completely disagree. I did not get this “girl boss” thing whatsoever. The whole “man bad” thing too… I didn’t see it. Of course the emperors were despicable men, but I mean, of course they are. Pedro Pascal’s character was conflicted but ultimately wasn’t a horrible man. He had noble intentions. And the main character, Lucious, well of course he’s going to be flawed at the start, and he overcomes said flaws by the end. He had an arc. Him being imperfect doesn’t mean he’s a “bad man.” Lastly, on this “girl boss” thing, it didn’t seem strange to me that his wife was in battle with him. They weren’t in a large city that has its own army. They made it clear that everyone in the village had to step up from farming, etc to fight. I’m typically on the side that is annoyed with men’s portrayals in film, but I didn’t have any issue with it here. I think this guy is being a bit a harsh. Annoyingly so, in my opinion.

There is a MASSIVE misunderstanding why movies like Gladiator worked and why many other remakes don't. It's not just masculinity but what is DRIVING that masculinity in the movies. In past movies, the masculine actions were based on love. That love drove men to brutal revenge. That love created bonds among other men they just met. That love made them better men for their families and communities. Think of John Wick. Did he just go on a revenge spree just because of a car and dog or ego? Nope. He was mourning over the loss of the love of his life and now the remaining things his wife left him have been taken. When you mess with what a man loves, you get a force of nature. CONTRAST THAT with how modern movies depict the motives behind Masculine behaviour. Men are depicted as insecure, selfish, greedy, controlling, ego driven, and flat out evil and every masculine trait and action comes from that lens. There is zero depictions of love and how it actually drives real men so the modern depictions feel wrong or just depressing to see some poor version of a man. Men AND WOMEN like seeing a heroic masculine hero because who doesn't like see love personified and some action scenes showing what happens when you mess with what men love.

Dude, no. They're putting real life politics into the movies. That's it. If you think society isn't attacking masculinity, then you are blind af. It is masculinity in general that is under attack, in all entertainment. Femboys are preferred over true men in entertainment now. Slaves to their wives, bitches that follow, that demand respect instead of commanding it. Smh, it's deeper than just revenge and love. Smh.

The likely logic is that arrows are light = no strength is needed to utilize them. You know, you just need to point a bow at something and flick the string. No armor can stop an arrow once it's been loosened. (Another detail in many movies that gets ignored.) Go ahead and try to draw a 200 pound bow. If you don't have one, you can deadlift with one hand to get the feel. That's 100 kilos in non-freedom units.

The fact that nothing of that sort happened in REAL HISTORY Is even mind boggling. irl there was no Maximus. Lucilla never had love interest. Commodus wasn't killed in the arena 😂 In history lucilla had a tragic life. She was used like a football despite being Marcus Aurelius daughter. The films are not even 3% of real history 😂 And the fact that They add Black people, Two Gays and Let live Lucilla for 2 films Is ultimate insult to Roman History. Hollywood is a joke.

Think more like 150-200lbs of pull, full on war bows, as opposed to the dainty 50lb Olympic bows that do most of the work for you too. Archaeologists can tell whether a skeleton was from an archer or not, because the power required to draw said bows, practiced from childhood upwards, actually altered the skeleton and upper muscles to reinforce them because of continuous use.

@@greypilgrim228 That's a crazy amount of power. Women just don't possess the strength and never did. I recall seeing a bunch of 16 year old kids going against female body builders and more than holding their own. I get fantasy and superhero stuff, but why do we keep pretending women, literally ANY women, would ever be capable doing the he-man stuff these movies claim in real life? They don't pretend 5'3" guys play basketball in the bigs or some 130 lb dude can compete in the NFL so why pretend it here? Always takes me out of the movie.

@@rufusmcgee4383 Ik ik, it's mental that Hollywood keeps pushing this ridiculous shit, women just as strong if not better than men. FFs, most men probably couldn't pull back a 200lb war bow. It's no surprise that English longbowmen, for example, had to train from 8 years old to master it, and continue training their whole lives in order to maintain that upper body and arm strength. But somehow suddenly a tiny 5'3 woman can pull a bow back like lightning in these ridiculous films and shows. So stupid honestly.

I just saw this movie and strongly disagree with the takes about masculinity not being celebrated. My reasoning is below. Spoilers: Pedro Pascal's character does not dislike being a general or fighting in war. He instead dislikes the leaders of Rome ordering pointless, brutal, wars and refusing to properly administer resources to the newly conquered areas. He was not whining to his wife about it, he was talking to her as a loved figure in Rome, as she is the daughter of Marcus Aurelius, which means that her bloodline is royal. The wife is an important figure in this movie. The main character was very masculine as well. He was stoic, like his father and grandfather. And a true stoic, not an emotionless brute like modern society assigns it. Also, Denzel's character says some awful things, but he is not a hero in this story.

Yes, this movie is flawed. Is it an attack on men? No. I am a man, and here’s my contention: Having a female character fight as a soldier is not an attack on masculinity. Someone explain to me how that takes away from the portrayal of strong men shown in this film. Regardless, she was in the film for about 20 minutes. This is a weak argument supported by no logic except for poor attempts at sarcasm by the host. As for shying away from masculine themes when compared to the first film - the cinematography differs from the legendary art style of the first film. However, the new modern approach has does not indicate anti-masculine themes. Genuinely - if someone can properly explain to me this guys point I have open ears. There is no doubt gladiator 1 is a better movie - but making men the victim here is an outlandish stretch claim.

There's only one main female character in the whole film! There's nothing anti-masculine about it, your argument is laughable. Classical architecture and sculptre exudes the feminine, that's just a fact. As does the other art of the time and it's influence through the ages, this sequel just reflects that. There's a subtle tilt towards demonstraiting the influence women had over men in power. History wasn't just your smelly weights gym mate. Also the battle sequences in this are actually one of it's strongest points compared to the original which were a bit of a rip-off from Kenneth Branagh's Henry V. You're not allowing for progression and expecting Ridley Scott to create a fax of the original. that ain't going to happen. Get over it. I personally think the energy that builds towards the final sequence easily matches the power of the original, that's an amazing achievement for all involved.

@@equivalentexchangeisalie5726 It's not woke which I hate also, it's real. Senator Gracchus was an obviously gay character from the original. this is a quote from a wiki on Homosexuality in ancient Rome: "It was socially acceptable for a freeborn Roman man to want sex with both female and male partners, as long as he took the penetrative role. The morality of the behaviour depended on the social standing of the partner, not gender per se" It was also normal for them to display what we would consider now rightly devient behaviour, this was also shown in the origianl; Commodus is trying to fuck his sister though most of the first film. It's a reflection of the reality of the times. Royal bloodlines interbred and just basically screwed around. I think this new film is actually is more realistic at depicting the degeneracy of bloodlines. Some of the emperors were complete madmen. The review is naive and just plain dumb. There's sadly a trend for Gladiator 2 around this theme, it's a form of clickbait for incels. This review is a prime example of that.

I learned something. Watching these videos, I had my opinion already made by the time I watched the actual film and thought that maybe this guy is speaking facts. Went into the movie theater with the idea that Gladiator never needed a sequel. Maximus' story needed no sequel at all. The movie had everything from the horrors of war, the suspense of being in the Colosseum, and the heart breaking part of Maximus' pain. 10/10 movie in my opinion, made me sentimental over the shit this guy went through, and I believed this is where the story should've ended. I exit the movie theater today and my mind is set on the fact that although Gladiator 2 is no where near the touching story of the first one, it is VERY close to the feelings that I felt while watching the first one. The suspense, the leadership that Lucius portrayed, the incredible fighting scenes that may or may not be exaggerated. Now, let me point out all the bitching and moaning you're doing in this video: -You point out some very trivial shit about the lady in armor. Like you said, it's only 10 seconds, so what does it matter? - You bitch about the lady telling the man to be more gentle (which again is trivial) - You oddly criticize the fact that a woman is fighting for Cirta when they literally have no other choice considering they were said to be the last bastion of the empire. - You say we don't care about the wife because no character has been established, but we barely knew anything about Maximus' wife and son when they died yet you praise his masculinity. The point is to establish the fact that he is losing people close to him to war. - You are clearly shit at interpreting the meaning behind movies if all you gathered from the brother emperors shaming Pedro Pascal is "they simply shamed him because of modernity". The ENTIRE point of the movie is to show why he SHOULDN'T be shamed. Lucius literally questions the audience in the Colosseum "Is this how Rome treats its heroes?" Where did this guy learn to critique films? - By the way, he wasn't shamed for conquering the Numidian kingdom, he was told he was going to bring himself more honor through more ambitious plans of conquering Indian and Persia. - You say there were no stakes in this movie, but there were literally no stakes in Gladiator either. Maximus had nothing going for himself until he met Lucilla, which wasn't until he was actually captured. Lucius actually had stakes considering he was the heir to the throne, his mother was risking death, and the fact that he had to stay alive as per the name "Gladiator". We literally know this coming into the movie... - Sorry, so not wanting to unnecessarily spill blood and wanting to dethrone the cruel emperors was being a cuck? I'm confused, are you just trying your hardest to find ways to criticize this movie? You aren't even attacking this from a historical point of view, there is literally no point of view you are attacking this from except from your stupid definition of masculinity. - So you're going to give an intentionally convoluted summary of the driving force behind Lucius just to make it seem more stupid, right? You just aren't good at putting words together. Let me help you for the next video: Lucius wanted to kill Acacius because he ordered his men to fire at his wife. Done. - The one good criticism you had. It is too unrealistic in a sense of the gore that happened, but this is by no means a criticism of the angle you are coming from. - You said people cheered because Lucius threw sand at the rhino. That is incorrect The people cheered because he took a hit from a rhino. Does it not entertain people to see violence happen? I guess you just miss the most important parts on purpose huh? - How the fuck is sending your child to North Africa the same as burning your house down? - Again, you clearly missed a major plot point about WHY Lucius and his wife had to fight. The Romans were literally trying to conquer the capital of their kingdom. They had no other choice but to fight, including the women. What is the point of protecting the women if your kingdom will be rendered to nothing? You need every abled body on that front. - I don't think you understand why people stopped when Lucius stood in the middle of the armies. First of all, the army literally took commands from Macrinus on that same day. Second of all, Lucius was the heir to the throne and he literally had Ravi ride out to tell his army he was alive. Honestly, this was a really shitty review that misconstrued or missed a lot. You really need to pay attention the next time you watch a movie because clearly, you haven't been doing your job correctly. Most of this wasn't even about your title, which was the crying about how they were "attacking masculinity". Are you really that insecure that you need to bitch about any movie that portrays women as fighters or literally tells a man to calm down? You can't make this shit up lol, do your job better bro.

I find it ironic how you have an issue with Pedro Pascal’s character being “less of a man” because he was conflicted about the war, when the same could be said for Maximus in the original. If you watch a deleted scene from the first Gladiator, Maximus is shown walking through the hospital tent looking at all of his dead and injured men. Despite winning, he looked defeated and conflicted because the victory came at such a massive cost. And when confronted by Commodus, he expressed his desire to go back home. I don’t understand how having a conscious and refusing to be a slave to power and control is an attack on masculinity.

Numidia or north Africa was part of the Roman empire. It was quite prosperous, its climate was Mediterranean and it was at the time more developed than most of the European continent. Nothing wrong with sending your child there for safety. Africa is a continent, not a country, living conditions and ethnicity vary widely from one place to the next. Sub-Saharan Africa is another story...
@Ruimas28

Oh yes! The problem is the movie depicted it all upside down lol In the movie, Rome is still somehow fighting and conquering Numidia. Which immediately brings the point: Why would a Roman royal send her heir to some enemy country which might be targeted by Rome sooner rather than later. Its the movie itself that creates this entire BS alternate universe and then makes its characters act nonsensical about it. Of course your statement was about real history. Which, yes, if it was real history, it would make sense to send her kid to a further away province with good life quality. But then again, the kid would have lived a confortable life there away from the main power struggles. And you would not have any of the movie plots.

I guess through the lens of an American director all Africans must be black people. That's a bummer, especially with how multi-cultural the Roman empire actually was.

As far as I could see, the main character embodies positive masculinity; respect, strength, chivalry, and honor. lol I don’t even remember the black archer scene so that shows you went into the movie looking for things to complain about. Denzel’s character - mission driven by any means Pascal’s character - noble but conflicted The son - was forced to leave as a kid but returned as a stubborn and pride man. Doesn’t get anymore masculine then that

Ok, a few notes on this film Firstly, i watched the film to completion. After having grown up with the original which was a masterpiece. I personally did not enjoy the film for a variety of reasons. 1. Did not enjoy the main character or his acting. 2. Dialogue quality varied greatly, some lines were descent, others not so much. 3. It was a sequel to a film with a perfect ending. Now that being said, i completely disagree with this guys analysis. There is nothing feminist about this film. There are only 2 important female characters in the film, and one dies in the first 10 minutes of the movie. The second, Lucia's mother was actually a well written character. I dislike the feminist disregard for male characters or over representation of girl boss characters, but this movie has neither.

What an absolutely horrendous take. I, too, when walked in the movie, thought it was going to be a soyslop girlboss propaganda piece. Yet it was not. The barbarian women takes what? about ten minutes of the run time? And it's not even that innacurate for a barbarian woman to fight in a war, as it did some times happen with these tribes. In that regard, the original gladiator is far more "woke", since there would never be a woman gladiator, much less a woman centurion. Not only that, his quest for vengeance is against ROME. Which is why he asks his captor for the heads of the ENTIRE ROMAN EMPIRE, and only settles for the general because he was the direct culprit of the death of his wife. Or is it now not manly to defend the honor and life of your family and those that you love? However, unlike the first one, the object of revenge is not at all treated one sidedly, as the story is all about the nature of the roman empire, its conquest, and overall the cost of war. Time and time again we see Marcus Aurelius cited as someone who had a vision of a fairer Rome, and thus we see the story of a man who wants to reform it (Accacius) and a man who wants to destroy it out of resentment (Lucius). And in the end, with the sacrifice of the hero Accacius, Lucius radical and unfounded position gives way to the more understanding approach of the general. Lucius accepts his heritage and vows to make the dream of Marcus Aurelius real. You know, the same dream Maximus had died for? How exactly is this not masculine? And he was not "just a barbarian". He had proved himself to the people by showing honor, valour and strenght in battle, which last time I checked, are pretty masculine traits, and to the army by being of the royal bloodline of Aurelius, unlike the degenerate f*gs that were the twin emperors. Not only that, he regains the title of emperor honourably, by defeating the scheming cowards that had sullied the spirit of Rome, and brought misery and death to the empire. It is not as good as its predecessor. But it is a good movie, and it certainly doesn't "turns it's back on masculinity" What a stupid, bad faith review. There are far worse degenerate woke cuck movies for you too leech off views on youtube, instead of picking on a perfectly good movie. "Is this what Rome does to its heroes?"

Terrible review, you understood nothing about the main character and it's conflict. Looks like you dind't watched the movie at all. Lucius is a vessel of hatred against Rome cause he was abandoned by his mother after the death of Maximus (which she claimed to be for his own safety). When he found himself again, and learned to love, the romans once again took it from him, killing his beloved wife and making him a gladiator. We watch him overcoming this ratred and leaving his path of vengeance for the greater good of Rome and it's people. He learns that there is still honor and good men between Romans with Acacius (which do not hated war, but to be sent to war by the foolish and deranged twins), embraces his father's legacy and takes responsability as prince of Rome and lord of his own destiny. Yes, the beggining of the movie shows flaws and weakness, but the plot is exactly that. The man who could only hate and think of vengeance, letting it go and embracing it's responsability with honor, strenght and courage. Then i ask you, what could be more manly?

by this logic the star wars sequel is a great trilogy.... but its not tho. the original movie wasnt about embracing responsibility like a edgy teenager who hates his dad, coming into adulthood. it was about a fight for justice against corruption, a fight which was entirely placed in the hands of one man against an empire... which I would argue is 1000x more masculine but hey... I guess these movies are subjective.
