Cannot wait to see Gladiator 2. I never think the sequel will live up to the original because it rarely does so I go into sequels just hoping it’s a good time & that I’m entertained. That’s more than enough for me 😃 happy to hear that’s the case here. I will say though Luke your opinions about Paul Mescal seem to be the norm going around lately. I see so many people say he should stick to indie films. Then others complain he’s not doing enough outside that genre. I feel like the poor guy can’t win. I think he’s still finding himself on screen. I for one am glad he gave an action flick a go. It’s nice to see him do something different. I’ve seen the behind the scenes footage & it looks like he really put his body & heart into this. He’s making the right choices working with the coolest people. Good for him I say 👍😃

Love this sequel… if jamie lee curtis got nominated and won for EEAAO, i think Connie delivers a far better acting worthy of nomination.. i love the subtlety of Pascal’s performance… i love Paul’s Lucius.. and of course, Denzel should be winning this. I can see him doing a RDJ best supporting run come awards season… Denzel is just amazing.

I think that you are underestimating The Academy’s objectivity when it comes to great performances, regardless of the political climate at the time. Not everyone in the AMAS are American, or Liberals for that matter. Jeremy Strong in The Apprentice fully transforms himself to the point where you don’t even realize he’s not Roy Cohn. And you’re giving too much credit to Culkin in A Real Pain. To me, it was just more of Culkin just playing himself/Roman Roy circa Succession. And I actually think that Jesse Eisenberg gives the stronger performance in the film; Eisenberg has several emotional scenes throughout the movie, which really ties the whole plot together, far more so than Culkin ever does.

Paul Mescal I'd a Tropical Aquarius which means in Sidereal Zodiac he can be a Capricorn or Aquarius. This means he is really Saturnine in character and yes. You are right?, ,He is more suited to Indie kind of films.

I just watched Gladiator 2, oh boy..., I'm hearing all the buzz for Denzel.... I don't get it.... In this overall mess of a film he's to me what Jared Leto was in The House of Gucci. Way way way over the top, very silly and at times being in a complete different film.... I know he is very beloved in the industry.... but giving him an oscar nomination for this would be insane.... (just my opinion) :-)

I saw Gladiator 2 last weekend. Am i the only one that thinks that the move was absolute shite? An awful mess, silly sequel with bad writing. Unmemorable score whereas the 1st movie's score was such a gut punch. The central hero did not have any of the gravitas compared to Russell Crowe. No emotional heft. And i don't understand why there's such buzz around Denzel's performance in this mediocre with spectacularly bad CGI.

I personally consider GLADIATOR to be the worst film ever to win Best Picture as I never understood its appeal, doubly so considering it beat what I felt were 2 clearly superior films in the lineup (TRAFFIC and CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON). The only reason I'm looking forward to this is Denzel Washington. Fun Fact: TRAFFIC was nominated for 5 Oscars and won everything except Picture (which it lost to GLADIATOR), and TRAFFIC is the only film ever to win for Director, Screenplay, Acting and Editing and still lose Picture.
@LukeHearfield8 күн бұрын
It was a strong year for Best Picture, and yeah, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was right there. It's just a shame that the Academy wasn't ready to vote for a foreign language film to win BP at that point. Given that Soderbergh won directing for Traffic, you would think it would've taken the picture, too. But the Best Actor and Best Picture stat for Gladiator does make a lot of sense.
@LukeHearfield8 күн бұрын
I rewatched Gladiator in prep for this and in retrospect it is a little crazy that it won Top Prize that year (especially with the film you mentioned and Chocolat and Erin Brockoich right there) but I actually think it's kinda cool that it did end up winning. A swords and sandals epic isn't really that commonplace by modern standards anymore and it's one of the few mega-blockbusters to ever take the top prize alongside LOTR: ROTK, Oppenheimer and Titanic.

The interesting question is whether Denzel Washington can FINALLY break his BAFTA curse. He has shockingly never even been nominated there till now. Will Smith actually endured the same fate of never being BAFTA-nominated until KING RICHARD, for which he swept the season (the unfortunate event occurred at the last stop).

I often thought that the biggest mistake Ridley Scott did with the first Gladiator movie was when he wasn't a producer of the first movie so when Gladiator won Best Picture, he didn't accept the trophy for himself because he wasn't the producer. I think about this a lot as it was his close chance to get an Oscar trophy if he was the producer like he is with his recent movies. After Gladiator came out, he became a producer in just about every movie he made 😅😅
