Why on Earth in a film like this would the command be "Fire?" "Fire" only came about with regards to cannons and firearms when they came about, because you had to light a fire to the cannon in order to, well, "fire" it. Before then, the command was something like what they used in "Braveheart," i.e. "Loose." Even today, in archery, they talk about knocking arrows and loosing said arrows, not "loading" the bow and then "firing" the arrows.

***** Ahhh, okay, thanks. The battle at the beginning wasn't done correctly either, as those spears the Romans carried were specifically designed as throwing spears (pilum). What they would do is when the enemy would charge, the legion would throw the spears at the enemy. The spears had a very thin shaft at the top so that if the spear missed, it would bend and thus the enemy couldn't pick it up and throw it back. After throwing the spears, the Romans would then draw their short swords (gladius).

The real Roman buildings likely did not look worn down like that at all, but rather were pretty brightly-colored. Nor was Commodus a man of average build with dark hair, but rather of very good build with long blonde hair. Nor was Rome founded as a republic as the one Senator claims.

It's meant to be a movie not a documentary and it's a rousing and effective movie at that. Most historical films and televisions shows are wildly inaccurate but it's not because the film makers themselves have a disdain for history or don't respect it enough. It's usually the because the audience might not necessarily care too much about how accurate a movie it portrays or references. Also, sometimes a movie works better when it certain details are altered or tweaked. Movies like Braveheart, Gladiator, or Kingdom of Heaven wouldn't be nearly as effective if they were 100% historically accurate.

2:40 - you can clearly see the bowman -- on the far right -- fitted his arrow on the opposite side of the bow, as it comes loose. either Ridley didn't want any injuries on set, or the archer's left-handed, in which case they gave him the wrong bow! good thing this unrealistic scene never made it on screen!
