Proximo explains to Maximus how he'll win his freedom.
Gladiator is a 2000 British-American epic historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Ralf Möller, Oliver Reed (in his final film role), Djimon Hounsou, Derek Jacobi, John Shrapnel, and Richard Harris. Crowe portrays the fictional character, loyal Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is betrayed when the emperor Marcus Aurelius's ambitious son, Commodus, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murder of his family and his emperor.

Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to witnesses, he drank eight pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whiskey and a few shots of Hennessy cognac, in a drinking match against a group of sailors on shore leave from HMS Cumberland at a local pub. His bar bill totalled a little over 270 Maltese lira (almost 450 GBP; about 590 USD). After beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling, Reed suddenly collapsed, dying while en route to hospital in an ambulance. He was 61 years old. What a story he went out to!

What I love about this scene is that this is the moment that Promixo gains Maximus' respect. Not only because he was a Gladiator, but when he tells his story or Marcus Aurelius, he tells it sincerely and doesn't boast. Maximus then shares his sincere ambition to Proximo, which he would not have shared if he didn't respect him. This is how respect is earned and shared.

Magical MusicmanVEVO No, that was near the end of the movie. The part where Maximus asks him: "are you in danger of becoming a good man?" from that point onward they re-use footage of him from earlier on in the film (the part where he makes the scoffing noise and shadows and dust) and you can tell it's a dummy when he gets killed.

Holy crap, when Reed talks about the noise rising up like a storm, god damn, absolutely epic acting Edit: I'm glad to see there are so many fans of Oliver Reed's performance, especially of that line and how he performed it. I would also like to mention how during that line and after it Proximo sheds the bravado and shows his vulnerability, especially when mentioning the wooden sword and how he was freed. It makes Proximo a layered character and sets the groundwork for when he frees Maximus and the other gladiators later.

I always liked the subtle change in expression from Russell Crowe when Reed’s character told him he was a gladiator once. I felt like Maximus gained an instant respect for the man and some empathy too knowing he wasn’t some mere bloated merchant of death but a man who also had to fight for his very life and was skilled enough to survive. I also felt like there was some of Oliver Reed in the character of Proximo too. A great scene, one of my all time favourite scenes.

Powerful scene. Oliver reed was a gladiator in his prime, a man who was born in the wrong age. A Goliath of a presence. He drank like a king of old, they would have threw women at him hundreds of years ago. So when maximus says "you where a gladiator?", And Oliver answers "yes I was" it sends shivers down your spine because you know he is relating to his younger years. Oliver could have picked maximus up over his head in his younger years, even after 20 pints. This man was months away from dying, an ageing gladiator past his prime but making a final statement and farewell. In his own words he was the "whispering giant" of films and "as long as he made the air move around him" that's all that matters in cinema. Rip Oliver reed, you are missed but not forgotten....

Oliver Reed delivers this perfectly. His character is certainly complex, gregarious in his circles of business, but pensive and thoughtful in quieter times... here he knows he has a thoroughbred of a man who can not only make him a ton of money, but could possibly be the greatest gladiator to ever enter the Coliseum... and when he starts describing his experiences, it's obvious he was in Maximus' shoes some time ago, he knows what's in store for him, and the look of glory on his face and the emotion in his voice when he talks about the intensity and the roar of the Coliseum, losing himself in that mental crescendo of his greatest life moment... very awe inspiring performance in what was Reed's last acting role on screen before his passing. 45 years in film and delivering a masterclass swan song at the dawn of the millennium. Rest in peace Mr. Reed, you played it well Sir.

This scene also shows the value of older persons on multiple levels. Just as the older Proximo has reached the supreme apex of the gladiator sub-discipline and teaches an additional thing or two to the younger Maximus, who himself is of seemingly unparalleled skill. Oliver Reed himself has clearly reached the supreme apex of acting and similarly teaches the younger Russell Crowe, who is also at the top of his game. In both cases it is the higher level of wisdom that comes from age and experience that is passed onto the younger man through visual knowledge.

There's a magical moment in film which is very elusive when a scene and the music come together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. This scene is one of them. In fact Gladiator is filled with these moments which is one of the reasons it's such a great film.

Yes indeed. In fact, it begins with the Germania battle at the very beginning. The slow build of the score, rising to a crescendo as the Roman cavalry charge down the hill and then the slowmo piece which conveys the horror of war to the viewer before victory is declared. It's just epicness from first to last minute

1:30 you can hear the pride and melancholy in Proximo’s voice. He misses the arena but also knows its horrible. The moment is also when Maximus sees beneath the old gladiators veneer of indifference. They are the same.

"I didn't go to acting school, only to normal school. I'm not for acting schools because I suspect that the majority of the teachers are there because they can't find work as actors or because they think they can teach people to act but haven't had much experience themselves in the field. What I mean is that my skepticism derives from the fact that I believe that for an actor it's much more important to learn with the audience . . . the audience is the real teacher and it's the audience that has taught me what I know. The audience's reaction tells me what I need to do, just as the audience's reaction makes you into a first-rate star. It's easy: the important thing is that a sufficient number of people, an audience, in a sufficient number of countries is willing to spend money to go see this actor. At this point the movie producers interfere and ask you to work on this or that film. And then one becomes an actor with international success depending on the public's reaction." - Oliver Reed
