Redgum. Maybe one of those bands that you have to grow with to fully appreciate. For me they formed the basis of many of my social views about what is right and wrong. As much as Chisel and Oils made the night, these guys had an everlasting impression. You either feel it or you don't and either way, that's fine. I am sure everybody has had, or at least will have, such an influential band on their outlook and lives - well mine was Redgum. Simple. Full stop,

33 years after this concert but many more years since it was first recorded in 1970s, this morning I finally stood on Gladstone Pier. I was late to the game and found out about Regum in 1983. I was only 16. 24 years later I went to Woodford Folk Festival and introduced John Schumann and the Vagabond Crew twice on stage. The second gig was a packed Grande Stage gig with I dunno... 2000 people mebbe? We had to pinch 5mins off them due to a timing problem so they finished with "I Was Only 19 (A Walk In The Light Green)'. On the final sustained note, I witnessed something I've not seen or heard before or since in 25 years on many stages. I told John about it afterwards and he was so chuffed that two years later, he told me the story like he'd heard from someone else. "That was me, ya dickhead! Geez, Shooey! Give a bloke some credit!!" In 2008, I helped with some promo for a Canberra concert at the Burns Club in Kambah. Later that year, he released Behind The Lines and casually mentioned via text that I was mentioned in the liner notes. "And I think to myself What a wonderful world..."

a lyrical giant. what a great achievement to write a song of this calibre.... i feel the hair and goose bumps rise with every stanza. truly a great song.

A true classic. The writer was Michael Atkinson, who plays acoustic guitar on this song.

I've heard someone call this the best song ever written. Not sure I'd go that far, but it is an absolute pearler.

I seem to recall someone relatively famous saying they thought this was one of the best songs they'd ever heard. I cant remember who but I do recall it surprised me when I heard it. Agree with you all, this is Redgum at their best.

A powerful moving song, whose theme is ever more relevant today, when manufacturing industries are going to the wall in many regional towns.

I first visited Oz in '86, although I was in hospital with some diggers in Da Nang in '67. Since my intro to Red Gum, I've barracked for them with all my Yank friends, but they don't get it, much like your young Aussies today. Heard The Herd try to do "I Was Only 19" and they were terrible. I only regret never getting to hear them live in a pub with my mates back in the day and now it'll never be. I'll be coming "Home" in 2012 and I'll kiss the ground when I hit Melbourne. Good on ya', Red Gum.

I was lucky enough to see Redgum live twice; once at the Arkaba hotel in Adelaide and once at “The Barn” near Mt Gambier. Absolutely phenomenal band. This song is one of the best. Many nights in Russia I’d crank this up on the sound system and join in with my own didgeridoo, after having too many beers and vodka! It made me so homesick! God knows what the neighbors thought!

Lived and worked in Gladstone from 1980-89... More work there than you could poke a stick at... Had to be a real bludger that was on the dole in those days and we were better off without their trouble making moles!

Michael Atkinson wrote this song based on the history of Gladstone in the 1970s. Sounds like things had changed by the 80's but that doesn't take away what people went through in the hard times. There's a big difference between someone who just doesn't want to work and someone who wants to work but there's no work around, then extend that out to a few thousand people in a town and you can imagine it would have been pretty grim.

aussiebloke007yo we Well bands like Redgum and Midnight Oil hate business and capitalism. They'd probably prefer us all to be Public Servants. I've had dealings with the MUA and they're crooks and thugs who will gouge whatever they can out of any government/business under cover of up the workers. Of course costal shipping is now dead in this country! Go figure.
