People talk about the temps as far as steps but the Pips had some Nice Foot work
@rainashaw25 жыл бұрын
The Pips could step! That's why Berry Gordy hired the Pip's choreographer Cholly Atkins and brought him on board at Motown.
@UncleDuTheWatchman3 жыл бұрын
I say it all the time! It took FIVE Tempts to out dance them THREE Pips. And their harmony is just as tight! The Pips gave the Tempts a run for their money!

Who else thinks that Bubba is adorable?
@odhecaton3 жыл бұрын
I heard an interview with Gladys from 1996, and she says the PIPS were the first to do all the footwork. She says the Temps would stand offstage and study every move the Pips made! The Temps then got 'more famous' first, and so were credited with inventing all that stuff, when in fact they copied the Pips.
@karmad44913 жыл бұрын
@@odhecaton Did the Temps get more famous because Motown promoted them more than Gladys Knight and the Pips? I heard that GK and the Pips left Motown and went with another record company, and when they had the big Motown 25th anniversary celebration, GK & the Pips declined to attend. I love the Pips choreography. Did they have a choreographer, or did they come up with the footwork themselves?

I think this was at the Chicago amphitheater black expo 1972. I remember those circles designers in the background. The Jackson 5 performed there too. It's in that movie "save the children " with Jessie Jackson.

There's no such thing as "too fast" in Music, Gladys set the timing...she set the pace, perhaps 200 beats per minute, the term in music is "presto", Italian for "fast"...lots of Italian terms in music, research it...or "prestissimo"

@steveb26624 жыл бұрын
Marvin Gaye recorded it first but Gladys released her version first. Credence after both.

What a bass player! Does anyone know who it was?
@seansherrod87253 жыл бұрын
My grandfather is legendary choreographer Charlie Atkins who did all the choreography for Gladys Knight and the Pips during their career. I was very present during this time and met/knew the bass player as well as the SUPER BAD ASS drummer who's name was "Al". For the life of me I cannot remember the bass player's name right now. Even though I was only 7 or 8 years old at the time I CLEARLY remember meeting the both of them because they had such a GREAT camaraderie for each other OFF stage as well as they did ON stage. They knew they were a team... A BAD-ASS team if I might say so myself. If it comes to me I'll respond back again.

@@renhoek3851 Thank you so much for your reply and your comment. Unfortunately the picture didn’t spark any names. I am however VERY familiar with Mr. Jerry Jemmott’s work especially with Aretha Franklin Live @ The Filmore West but unfortunately because I was so young at the time OR because I’m too old in the present I can’t remember.

She always altered the tempo of this song to fit the occasion. This isn't even the fastest tempo I've heard them do it at. You can tell just watching the performance this is the tempo she wanted this night.
