I myself sang this duet too, but THIS IS THE BEST PERFORMANCE of the many "Cats" on the Internet!

I was in the Hall during the rehearsal which was hilarious. All three of them kept giggling and couldn't get to the end of the piece. Eventually, Andrew Davies managed to speak through fits of laughter and said to the two singers, "We are professionals, we can do this" - followed by more fits of giggles.

My favorite version of this duet, by miles. I love how they subtly act through the piece, really creating a sense of narrative, but without actually pretending they ARE cats. There are way too many versions around with singers sporting fake whiskers and licking themselves.

Indeed! They're catty, not cats. I think the fact that they're good friends carries over. It was a wonderful thing to see - just three musicians just having fun, right in the middle of the one of the biggest classical concerts in the global calendar. Andrew Davis is clearly loving every second of it, too. It's good-natured, funny, human, and manages to also be surprisingly sophisticated.

One word, brilliant. The great composer 'anonymous' must have been laughing through this performance, which was done in a British way, over flowers and damehood. Also, when you consider the more serious pieces of this period that are largely forgotten or rarely performed. This duet of fun must have at least 900 lives. Wonderful performance by these fabulous ladies. Bravo.

The composer is Rossini 🙂

@@lefinlay . Firstly, thank you for your reply, it inspired my music librarians research mode to click in. Here's what one found in my books, and other sources. The Cats duet was composed by the English composer Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795-1856), in the style of Rossini. Hence the claim that he composed it. In the edition of 1825, Pearsall is given the full credit for comprising it. Although the article was written itself by the composer using the pseudonym, G Berthold. Adding more confusion, on top of confusion. The cats duet is therefore a musical tribute to Rossini, just like the carnival of the animals by Saint-Saen is a tribute to music composers of their time. It's a fun piece, that people enjoy, by an forgotten composer. The kind that lightens the atmosphere in a concert venue. Once again, thank you for your reply. Gratefully appreciated. Music rocks.

@@robertmcqueen289 thank you for YOUR reply! That’s really interesting to know, I had always attributed it to Rossini! I’ll have to look into more pieces by Pearsall :)

is it just me, or is Regis Mengus, one of the 2 choir boys who also made this piece famous, now a bari-hunk in French opera, present in the crowd at this performance? I swear that's him or his doppelganger at the 1:36 mark.
