Pure genius. Marc was one of a kind and I feel he and his contribution to music are totally underrated and under appreciated. I can only imagine the incredible body of work he would have created. Keeping a little Marc in my heart 💚🎸🤘🎶

If you listen to the first lp by Marc and Steve peregrine took it’s something of beauty . I love the whole turn up and sit down with the guitar and bongos vibe but then the imaginative lyrics and the guitar playing is really mellow and some great chords. They did have something special then and it was a sort of hippy heaven type thing, Steve was a special part of it . The later glam rock n Roll thing was equally great and sold more ? I have friends that tell me about 1968 and turning up at basement guitar gigs in soho and there was a big scene of folk singing and loads of acoustic guitar. Lovely stuff x

Well whatever Marcs style of music was/is, to say the least its Very unique, moving and emotional in its own way.Whether Marc or other artists like Slade,The Sweet,Gary Glitter or any other 70s,80s,90s or whatever decade I haven't got a opinion on as I wasn't born until the 90s and cant comment. The Thing I like about Marc as a musician, singer, songwriter, arist is he wasn't afraid of being his own person and doing his own thing, and all the hardwork he put in to getting himself noticed and not giving up on his dream which is inspirig to a lot of people to follow their dreams, whether that is to become a musician, actor, designer, legal secretary or whatever it is and he truly deserved all the success he got although it wasn't just him on his own. I'd love to if possible find out more about Marc as Marc Feld as I believe that can reveal a lot about the artist he was/is and what kind of person he was in general, and I have a lot of respect for Marc as a person for many things. He'll never be forgotten they definitely made like that anymore,so many artists copy eachother or aren't original etc. Rest In Piece Marc until we meet in Heaven xxxx

Interesting how the things that most rock stars said they DIDN'T want to be back then, most mainstream artists today are exactly those things. And it shows in the quality of the music... oh, boy. Anyway, it's interesting to hear Marc's take on how he wants to be viewed as a musician, and I understand him. The guy was madly talented, he made songs that were too appealing resist, but that also had a lot of meaning and substance. Which is why his works still stand up to the tests of time

It does frustrate me that he is now only associated with crap pop. I personally came to Marc through T.Rex rather than Tyrannosaurus Rex. I love T.Rex, I think musically they're ecstatic and glorious, and have a sound unlike any other. I don't see it as anti-intellectual to liek pop music. Morrissey has made it quite clear that pop can be elevated. As a rock/pop group they (T.Rex) stand on their own and are unique even as the progenitors of a pop movement, and I do consider him (Marc Bolan) to be the original creator of glam rock (which I love aswell). I don't think that tarnishes him at all. It's a separate thing. Now I've heard Tyrannosaurus Rex and think that there was a deeper poetic element to what he was doing. All that poetry and mythopoeic imagery is forgotten, and I think it's so sad. They should re-release _The Warlock of Love_. You can only buy antique copies of it for extortionate amounts on ebay now. He should recieve greater recognition for his extensive talents.

(Cont'd) 4 decades later. But too bad that back in his heyday, critics overlooked the uniqueness and depth in his music and grouped him with manufactured teen idols simply because he attracted the same fanbase. I think music critics in general are up their asses, but they were truly full of it back then, acting like they were experts on music. I think even now he's still very underrated, he deserves way more recognition for his contribution to rock n' roll.

Journalists, critics, interviewers, historians...none of these people ever did or ever will really understand Marc Bolan. Their goal is to create a story and depict a character - Marc could play along, but they couldn't get any deeper into his being. Marc himself was the only one who could communicate the reality of the moment. Those who listen without barriers get him. Everything Marc did was a communication from his creative soul...change was natural.

this is refreshing. marc bolan, right up until the end, was still essentially a ladbroke grove underground hipster. (he didn't like being compared with david cassidy and donny osmond, but he probably would not have objected to being mentioned in the same breathe with david bowie and ian hunter.)

I came to T. Rex at Tanks. I then went back and found what had come before - as fans do! I also stayed with Marc 'til that bitter end. I'm in my sixties now. I happily realize I've always cared about Rock 'n' Roll more than I've cared about all the "important" grown up things in life. So I'm no "fan boy" when it comes to Bolan & T. Rex. But I can still slap on those LPs and feel that goodness wash out of the speakers. Yeah....Tony Visconti had to be part of it too! Marc had great ideas but I'm the first one to tell you he had musical limits.....Bolan & Visconti was a perfect partnership though.....

Marc was my number one favourite glam artist, but the guy was Mr Ego. He only claimed "glam is dead" after his own tracks began doing poorly in the charts and the newer glam acts started out-selling him. Definitely a case of sour grapes. Unfortunately the very fact that the originator of glam pronunced it as dead effectively killed it off. No band dare glitter themselves up after Bolan - no matter how un-hip he was gradually becoming - declared it as dated.

Marc was the instigator of a certain fashion and musical movement and by the sounds of it record companies saw an opportunity to project a good lookin male up front to sing about puppy love with a melody and cash in on the audience hed attracted..mainly teenagers - early twenties..he was talented and witty and original, what followed wasnt..too easy for the record companies, this guys legacy is very much misundersood by the wider public but no doubt very respected in all musical circles, pioneer

@DrugStabbingTime You sure are proving the correctness between Glam Rock and Hair Metal :) But most early glam rock bands were precursor to punk rock so they are related in some way. Plus early glam rock's sound varied from band to band imo. Unlike Hair Metal which used a common format.

Great video. This finally explains why his music changed so drastically after Tanx. His critics had also said that his music was all starting to sound the same, and I think that upset him greatly. I can understand why he wanted to branch out, and not be defined as a teen idol musician, when he was obviously much more than that.Still, I still wish he had kept the old T. Rex style. His later music was terrible, imo.

Futuristic Dragon and Dandy are two of the coolest albums from that era, two drastically different methods of blending rock and disco/soul music into one cool blend. As for Zip Gun/Light of Love, that album is probably his most similar to Electric Warrior if it weren’t for the messy production and poor instrumentation/vocals. If he’d made it sober and done a few more takes that album would’ve been great.

Glam Rock was a distinct musical movement in the UK heavily connected with fashion. The US never really had it as a movement. Kiss became huge, but they did so just as the movement was crumbling in the UK. To say that 'Glam Rock is dead' would be to say that a particular phase in British music had died commercially, and would be an entirely accurate thing to say in, say, 1977.

@MrLayford65 Music videos did exist back then, Queen were credited for making the first "true" music video for Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975, although videos like that existed as far back as the late 60s, so I'm not sure why Queen gets credit for being the first to do it.

@justnicknet Wow O.o! The Glam's big time that I"m so fond of mentioning is not 1973. It's more 1984-1990. Are you aware that the current year is 2010 dear? Or is it 1993 for you? Seems like you may be around 17 years behind. If I am mistaken please forgive me, but as I understand it Glam Rock was bands like BonJovi, Poison, Warrant, Winger, Ratt and so on.

You have to understand that Bolan was an eccentric genius, he would lie in almost every interview he ever gave, be it in print or audio. Musically, he did a magnificent job considering his limited musical ability, his wild imagination led to his bizarre lyrics. and the music is all bout the mystical world of magic, love and sex. Electric Warrior and The Slider are wonderful examples of Bolan Electric Boogie. They are two of the best albums released in the golden age of rock music (the 1970's) Listen to the songs, there is little point listening to his interviews because you won't find any truth in them at all. Bolan tried to play the press on a break, they responded to this with great cruelty, Dylan did this in the 60's, (Dylan blatantly lied to the press all the time) Bolan forgot that dealing with the English press you have to realise you cannot always bullshit the bullshitters...

I think (perhaps i'm influenced by a book like "hte rise and fall.." ) he's in his own universe, He wants to be a starr, and after he falls in caricature. It's so shame he has no closer friend who have more influence about him for open his eyes what he became, so fast after his success. In 1977 he was almost again in shape, until a very drunk evening, his girlfriend and company decides to take the car in spite of late hour...

i have hard time with the thought of putting T-Rex and Kiss in same bucket. They're not the same. T-Rex along wth Bowie's Ziggy Stardust phase and Slade are what i've come to think of as Glam Rock whereas Kiss and Motley Crue were more like Hair Metal or Glam Metal.

I think what Marc's saying is he's getting stuck with the label, one that at that time was almost all glitter and platforms and cheesy pop pablum. Glam died cos it became a trend, one that Bolan, by stating he was a 'punk', was already moving ahead of. I think the period you call 'glam' (80-90's) is better known as hair (extensions) metal. The closest 70's glam/glitter got to real hard rock was Ziggy Stardust, the rest was all David Cassidy, Wigwam Bam, and Roy Wood in Facepaint.

@BolanBarlow1 No no. As I said the "height" of glam rock was around 1984 to 1990. Not that glam rock didn't exist in the 70's. I should have made that point when I mentioned BonJovi and so on. Sorry about that. You are right about the evolution of the sound and style of Glam Rock over the years. My original point is still the same and is still true. Bolan was wrong when he said Glam Rock was dead. It clearly wasn't dead and in fact it went on to grow even more in popularity.

lol the comment "Glam rock is dead" is ridiculous... The Glam Rock scene actually lasted until the 90's... The last example i can think of was Suede's "Coming Up" album, and that was released in 96 0r 97. Of course its peak was during the early 70's and late 80's but dead... it never was until some yeas ago. Like osuprowler said, imagine Morrisey, in the late 80's, saying "hey Britpop's dead"... looooool

Musically he hadn't move on too. Rex fans claim he was making a comeback. Well the Marc Show viewing audience was 2 to 3m. He released a single celebrate summer which sold less than 5000 copies. Marc Bolan never played or represented "Glam Rock" nor did he ever have a grasp of what glam rock was. He played 70s Disco/Rock Pop music. It was all he ever knew. If it was before 1984 and really 1986 then it was NOT glam rock. Glam Rock was not popularly accepted or recognized until bands like Poison, Bon Jovi, Ratt, Warrant, Winger, Def Leopard, White Snake and so on really started to boom. So lets not hear from long gone artists that never knew "Glam Rock" claiming it is dead.
