Sometimes stores throw things away that don't sell because they are "credited back" or written off. They have to destroy in order to receive credit. Some weird accounting/legal/company policy crap. Doesn't change that it feels 100% wrong to destroy something that's still brand new.

Put the melted candles in containers flat on the floor of your car for another day -- they'll melt back into shape! I've done it before -- I live in Houston, so hot cars are a way of life.

All of those men’s polo shirts, underwear, and Socks they just decided to slash up and destroy could’ve been donated to a men’s shelter because a lot of people in these shelters go job hunting and they need nice clothes for interviews and stuff. It’s such a waste And terrible to put in our landfills because it’s so bad for our environment. Something is seriously wrong with people and they need to start changing for the better because it’s completely sickening.

If you have any Michael craft stores around you make sure to check those. They throw a lot of good stuff away. Bath & body will throw candles away that are broken but you can just transfer it into a new container.

The melted candles you can melt down and put into molds for wax melts

Put the melted ones back in your car, use a fork later when you can move the wax to find the wick. Or just use the wax in a cube wax thing as wax melts. Take out current dried wax, put in melted eax, let ut cool and remove. Or leave the candle in the car as scent. 😅

During my retail days, in ye olde past, we had to destroy items before we put them in the crushing dumpster. The reason was due to fraud. Some people would go through dumpsters for product, then try to return the items to stores for cash/credit. We hated to destroy things, but we really didn't have a choice. The same thing would happen with donations, unfortunately.

@@emilys5308 Luckily, we didn't have to destroy that many clothes. If a breakable item had a chip, we had to finish it off. If a plush had a stain or safety issue, we had to completely destroy it for safety reasons, which makes sense. For us, it was usually a safety issue first and fraud issue second.

I think these companies would benefit from extreme discounted items at least they make money instead of waisting things. It's just plain sad how corporations don't care. Makes you think twice shopping out. Put warm water in a sink and let it sit a minute and the candle will come out of the glass. I make candles so always repeat and repour older candles for a new one

They have to throw away opened products because they don’t know whether or not the actual product has been tampered with, and could potentially harm any customers who do buy it. Also, especially for name brands, especially high-end ones, if the product’s quality was compromised, consumers will think it was the brand’s mistake, and that could tarnish the brand’s image. It sucks especially if the product was not actually tampered with, but rather the customer wanted to check it out. Yep. I feel like all stores should offer a “demo” version of the product for people to check out, so that they don’t feel like they have no choice but to physically open the products and cause them to be thrown out.

These companies get to right these off as a loss. Laws should be changed so that store like this (not grocery stores) can only write this stuff off if a large percentage is donated. If they were required to donate 75% of these items, can you imagine the good they could do? This could boost thrift store inventories for small non profits.

So sad. You think the underwear & socks could be donated to homeless shelters. And clothing can be donated to Goodwill. Not sure why bath & body would not give the old/used candles to employees. Better than tossing them. What a waste. I used to work at a supermarket when I was younger and the manager would always give us meat that was getting close to expiration date. This was so nice of him to do, and it helped me and my family out as I did not have a lot of money at the time.

I don’t know how you’re able to go dumpster diving because I was moving 2 Months ago and I went behind a Ross to grab some boxes out of the dumpster and security came around and told me to get back into my car. He was treating me as if I was a thief. I was only able to grab two boxes and I thought it was so incredibly stupid because it doesn’t make any sense to me that they were much rather have stuff being put in our landfills. A lot of the stuff that gets thrown into these dumpsters, such as the plastics and the metals don’t break down properly and that’s really bad for environment. The greed in this country has gotten so out of control that is sickening. They’re so greedy that they would rather throw it away, then donate it to somebody who really needs it.
