Excellent job of explaining & demonstrating how the different stones can be used to achieve any number of effects...I have most of these, except the white stones...need some of those, but you could actually get by only using 2 or 3 burrs if that suited the peice as well...I love your accent too! Thank you for this video. I've just started engraving & was missing polishing rubbers/stones for shading. I ordered a set, they arrived & I started using them in practice & was not impressed. Seems there is nothing wrong with my purchase but how I was using them & my expectations of them. Again, thank you for this video & clarification.

They can be hard to find. Some you can find on Amazon or Ebay. I don't know where you are based, but in the UK, Eternal Tools or B&H services are reliable suppliers. Failing that try searching online for jewelry tools and supplies in your area.

Hi Karen! I enjoy your videos so much. Would you be able to suggest a proper kit on Amazon for shading? I am not seeing kits for the Arkansas stone for whatever reason, just a white wool bit. Please suggest if you have the time. Thank you!
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext Жыл бұрын
Very tricky question. Sets of rubber polishers are easily available on Amazon. White Arkansas stones are a different matter. I have noticed a few sets of grinding stone, which include white stones, appearing recently but I haven't tried them myself so I don't know if they are equivalent to a white arkansas. If you copy and paste this into tge search box you should see what I mean. 36 Pieces Shank Abrasive Mounted Stone Grinding Wheel Head Mounted Points Abrasive Stone Heads Set Grinding Wheel Bits with Plastic Box for Rotary Tool 1/8 Inch Shank 3 Colors 2 Shapes 6 Sizes Burrs are available on Ebay, usually made of a ceramic or a fine aluminium oxide, which work quite well. The problem is they tend to come with 1.8mm shank, which may not fit your machine. If you search on Ebay for "white dental polisher" you should see what I mean. I buy white arkansas from specialist suppliers. Eternal Tools have a good selection and an excellent website. B&H supplies are very reasonably priced, but have a terrible website. You have to phone him to tell him what you want and get an up-to-date price. Great customer service though. If you can't use those sites then the best I can suggest is to search on-line for "jewellery making tools and supplies" in your area and hopefully you will find a supplier. Best of luck.

@@whatktmadenext Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Lots of great information...and i am familiar with the site Eternal Tools. Can I confirm please - did you only use water with the second strip, the diamond burr with water?? Thank you
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. The first strip was dry with a diamond burr and the second was wet. I don't normally use water with stones, mainly because it seems to make them wear down a lot quicker and I am too mean to want to replace them all the time.

Can you color the glass
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 3 жыл бұрын
There are a few different ways to colour the glass. If it is a decorative piece (i.e. not going to be washed in soapy water) RubnBuff comes in a range of colours and is easy to apply. Pebeo Vitreo glass paint colours well and claims to be safe for washing once it has been baked on, but I haven't tested that myself. A number of people suggest using One Shot paint or alcohol inks. I have also used gold leaf in the past to highlight areas of the engraving. This is a subject that comes up a lot. Perhaps worth covering in a future video.

@@whatktmadenext Madam, I was interested to create depth in the base plate float glass in a smooth way to get 3D effect. The Float Glass plate is of 4mm thickness. Just want to know how I can gauge out glass in certain areas to get the effect.
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 2 жыл бұрын
The only thing I can suggest is to take a large diamond burr and start taking down the glass to the level you want. That will leave you with tool marks from your burr. Carefully look at the surface and mark any high spots with a pencil. Turn down the speed on your machine and using the lightest pressure you can manage , begin to take down those high spots. Then repeat that process, marking any high spots with a pencil and carefully grinding them down at a low speed. This technique takes some practice and it can be very difficult to achieve a flat and even surface. Commercially it would normally be done using a sandblaster, but in the absence of that equipment, time, care and patience will be needed I am afraid.

Can you use water with the stones?An if so what kind of difference dose it have?
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 3 жыл бұрын
You could use water with the different types of stones, and it would have a similar effect as when used with diamond burrs. The engraving would be just a little smoother and darker. I don't use water with stones because I find it makes them wear down a lot more quickly. They seem to me to last a lot longer if I only use them dry.
@sexyedro
@sexyedro 2 жыл бұрын
How hard do you push down with the rubber burrs? And do you use water as well? I'm having a problem with them wearing down fast
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I never use water with a rubber burr, but that means you do have to be careful that the glass is not getting too hot as you work. There is a lot of friction involved and I have seen cases where the heat of polishing has caused the glass to craze. I don't tend to use a lot of pressure either. A gentle touch and a bit of patience is usually most effective. If you need to polish back a large area, which certainly can wear down your burrs, try starting with a coarser rubber polisher and work down to a softer, finer burr as you begin to get the surface a bit smoother.
