Hey! I absolutely love your easy to follow videos for beginners! Just picked up glass etching a few weeks ago so still very new at this. I bought a diamond bur set from Amazon but every time I try to use them they produce a black mark. I tried slower and faster speeds but still the same outcome. Am I doing something wrong or is there maybe something wrong with the Burs I bought? Any suggestions on exactly what brand of burs to buy or any help would be appreciated!

Those black marks usually happen when there are areas on the burr where there is no diamond so the metal shank rubs against the glass and leaves the mark. In any set of Amazon burrs you are likely to have a few that do this. Hopefully some of them will work for you though. You are not doing anything wrong. I am not sure where you are based. Here in the UK I could recommend you go to Eternal Tools or B&H Supplies to get get some better quality ones. In other countries I have limited information for you. You could try searching online for "jewellery making tools and equipment ". That often brings up the better quality suppliers in your area.

Hi! I have dabbled in sea glass jewelry and and just wondering about the water system you are using to keep the glass cool while you engrave? Thanks.
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 3 ай бұрын
I have a very simple homemade system. The one shown in the video uses a siphon to draw up the water, but it could just as easily be made as a gravity fed system by fitting the pipe (with a water tight fitting) at the bottom of the reservoir. Not hard to make. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l52moKR8pq2YjMk

Yes, air tools have a very impressive spin speed. Some burrs would struggle to cope with that, particularly some polishing rubbers. I understand they can be very effective though.

I haven't stopped, just got a lot on just now. Black animals are quite difficult. The only real option is to focus on the highlights and make them look really shiny. I'll see if I can do a video to explain what I mean.

Nice set up !! Which dremel do you use ?
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 9 ай бұрын
For years I used a Dremel 3000 with a flexishaft. I found it good and reliable although you do have to make sure you check and change the brushes every so often. I moved to a Dremel pendant motor a year or two ago, the Fortiflex. It has quite a bit more power but the hand piece is a little more awkward.

any tips on how to decide where to add shade to your drawings ? i never was really good at painting, i assume its the same thought process.
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 11 ай бұрын
Yes, just the same as drawing. I usually pick an imaginary point that the light is shining from and add shade to the opposite parts of the engraving.

Hi KT, I have a question.. are the white polishing burrs used for dental polishing the same?? Thanks, Jo x
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 11 ай бұрын
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. Yes, I often use the dental polishing burrs to do the same job as white Arkansas stones. The only difficulty can be that the ones I normally see have a 1.8mm shank. Fine if you have a suitable chuck though.

What speed is the best for engraving glass?
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 11 ай бұрын
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. The speed you use depends on what you are trying to do. If you are trying to engrave deeply and remove a lot of glass, then a higher speed is good. If you are gently removing ridges or engraving a shallow area, use a lower speed. Only practice will show you the correct speed to use.

The sound is satisfactory thanks. One question about disposal of the water which contains the glass sludge. Is it safe to pour down the drains, will it build up and clog pipes or is there a better way of disposing it? Thanks.
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext Жыл бұрын
It should be safe to pour down a drain. The quantity of sludge is small compared to the volume of water and it is very fine, so easily washed away. If you are very anxious about it, you could strain the waste water through a double layer of kitchen towel to catch most of the glass powder.

I am doing engraving a couple of years now, but I have a hard time to find the right equipment. I have stil not found any kind of rubber and white arcansas stone. I am in Germany, do you have by any chances an idear where to look for professional tools.
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext Жыл бұрын
Hi. I don't have any recommendations I can give you, except to search on-line for "jewellery making tools and equipment ". I know Eternal Tools ships to outside the UK but I hear they can be expensive. I plan to do a video soon showing the difference between cheap and expensive burrs. As part of that I will ask people to comment about where they buy equipment, so perhaps I can build up a list for people to refer to. I am going to be in Germany next week, so I will do a bit of searching if I get a chance.

I am just curious. What if you reversed the process and made an even cut across. Then in second round made another cut away from the edges. Making the second cut deeper than the first cut. And then the third cut along the center, making the deepest cut. Would it create the same rounded cut? And how would one attempt intaglio on a mirror? From the back, from the polished side? Would be interesting to see the difference if you did it both ways..
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes you would get the same effect of a rounded channel in the glass. I suppose it just depends which method you find easier. You can certainly make intaglio engraving on mirrors, so long as the glass is thick enough. I have a video which shows the different effects of engraving on the front and the back. Just remember, if the mirror is thick enough to allow intaglio work the reflected image of the engraving will be more pronounced.
