At 42:38, Naveen should not be able to build the Sculpture Workshop; he really only has one (1) clay because he did not move his wheel appropriately. It's interesting because he and Monique just commented on her getting shafted on her building with the wheel moving. Thanks for the videos! You're a delightful couple.

Just about to say the same. I think Naveen was doing it on purpose 😛 - he often didn't rotate his dial, and I swear he kept looking at it to see if Monique saw. Only joshing - I'm sure it was purely accidental! The immediately afterwards he did it again!

It allowed him to gain 2 points from that building, he builds 1 more building later for 1 water, but he would be able to do it anyways since its a different wheel, he technically had 13 food and not 14, BUT he had an extra brick and thats +1 point instead of food's 1 point per 3 food. The scores were 18.5 to 22.5. So even without that accidental cheat it would have been 18.5 to 20.5 minus third of a point for 1 less food, PLUS 1 point for 1 brick, so around 18.5 to ~21. Close game.

I'm developing quiet an interest in Rosenberg's games. Very hard to find in Australia. Polyomino games no where to be found. This guy is very very popular. After watching a heap of your playthroughs I'm understanding why. Fantastic games. The point of this was Naveen's "Potash" pronunciation. Pot Ash. I laughed so hard. You pair are entertainment in spades, even when you don't try. I love your channel. Glass road feels like a good entry game for a first time playing his games. Might buy this one to start.

Glass Road is an amazing game. It's my favourite from Rosenberg (I am still missing quite a lot of them, but still!). I think it was my first Uwe game after Bonhanza. Such a big difference. I love the card play system, even though it can mess with you so many times. And it is so hard to manage your resources and the wheel sometimes. I find it so fascinating that I really want to give it a try to Ora et Labora one day, because of the wheel.

Both Imperial Settlers and especially 51st State Master Set are at least one step above Empires of the North because they streamlined EotN too much especially by removing the multi-use-cards and by having completely separated decks the multi-player-solitaire-feeling ist even higher...up to too high.

thanks for this! Looking fwd to your play of Nusfjord bc it's all the good things about Glass Road (high crunchiness to game length ratio, ownership of specific action-granting characters, relatively quick and easy scoring from buildings/ships) without any of the less fun parts (eg AP from choosing cards at the beginning of each round, getting your actions ruined by follow mechanism). I know you usually like heavier games, but I'm quite curious of your thoughts on it (and also Fields of Arle w/expansion)!

"Glass Road" is a really cool game with the choosing role cards, sculpting terrain, resource wheels and variation with the buildings. I like the mind game when choosing the role cards: 3 to play yourself and 2 extra to play if you guess right what other players play. It might not be the most balanced thing, but it's fun and it forces you to not always go for the obviously best strategy. The game is very tight concerning resources and actions. Sadly the handling of the resource wheels is a bit error-prone. Easy to forget when the wheel moves, which can lead to planing mistakes. And it's hard keep an overview over the available buildings and their costs especially when playing with more than 2 players.

@Duxa_ Жыл бұрын
Should be noted that the manual says you can play 5 rounds. And I think that you should since at around 4 is when your engine (building synergies) start to click. Playing 4 rounds is sort of like playing short game in Feast for Odin. I think the genius of this game is looking at your opponent's board/wheel and figuring out what they'll play so that you get to play it for free on their turn. Thats a huge part of the game. For example seeing that they have no bricks and no clay, but have charcoal and food (on brick wheel), good chance they'll play one of the clay cards to make brick. So you pick it too with intention of not playing it, and if your opponent wont play it you just play it last. Same thing is if you look over and they have full board (no empty spaces), good chance they'll do a slash and burn (intead of removing one of the small tiles), so picking that to play on opponent's turn. Thats where this game shines, piggy backing off your oponent and thereby getting to play more cards than them.
@BeforeYouPlay Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing this! Makes sense. Figuring out what the other person will play and using that information to optimize your turn! We definitely weren't doing that lol but after more plays it'll probably open up. Thanks!

@@BeforeYouPlay Yup! Id love to see you guys play it again. Overall its very enjoyable to watch you play. Another note, on Naveen's adjacency building, he should have put it into one tile to the left of where he did to instantly gain +1 adjacency from the pre-printed building. It didnt matter in the end since he surrounded it anyways, but just something to keep in mind. Leverage those pre-printed buildings 👍
@Duxa_ Жыл бұрын
@@BeforeYouPlay Yeah, watching your postmortem after playing again. I think a lot of people try to play this as multiplayer solitaire and try to avoid other player influencing their hand. They focus too much on their board. Monique says that she felt that whenever Naveen played something she picked it was bad, but thats actually a good thing, she got to play the card for free out of turn, and Naveen's turn was dampened by taking half of his actions away. Thats how you are supposed to play, you arent supposed to avoid that. The active player wants to play a unique card, to be able to use both actions. The non active players want the active player to play a card that they are holding in their hand. in the end of her comments Monique says that "its not the most exciting game". I think that opinion will change when you realize that it is exciting when opponent plays a card you are holding, because thats what you want. So excitement is in getting to play a card for free and at the same time hamper your opponent's plans.
@tcoram12 жыл бұрын
I've never played this with only two players so I wasn't aware of the rule that you played until someone runs out of cards. For 3-4 players, you only play a maximum of 3 cards per round. You have 5 cards because you can potentially match 2 cards played by other people. The other main difference in play for 3-4 players is that everyone chooses a card to play at the same time and then the cards are revealed and resolved going around the table from the Start player for the round, and you ONLY match if you have the card still in your unplayed hand cards.
@danvenables49352 жыл бұрын
The mechanics look interesting and different from other Uwe games. I like the card play element, just seems like you can get a bit screwed by the luck element in this like Monique was. I wonder if having the first card or last card as a safe unfollowable card might be better. It does seem like you are on edge every time you play a card here! Also does seem really short for an Uwe game- I'd have thought 5 rounds would be better. Feels like it ended prematurely.
@terrytoriq2 жыл бұрын
Good game guys. ^^ This game is extremely mean. :( Whatever strategy you might have is basically broken by one wrong choice. So far is my least favorite in the series. Still thanks for sharing ;) PS: Do you have a ghost? O.O The fireplace was lighting in and out through the video.... Very suspicious! :P
@Duxa_ Жыл бұрын
You are supposed to look at other people's boards and wheels to anticipate what they will pick for their cards. It sounds like you play this just building the best village you can, thats not a good way to play, because others who pay attention to what you are doing will anticipate what you will pick and get to play more cards than you. Its a major part of this game tobe able to play more than 3 cards (in 3-4 player) and all 5 cards in 2 player games.

If I have done the math correctly (which I hope I did) then the probability of having no identical card is about 8.4% 1 identical card is 34.9% 2 identical cards is 40% 3 identical cards is 15% 4 identical cards is 1.6% 5 identical cards is 0.03% The probability of course doesnt include that both players use strategy. It only indicates the likelihood of getting the same number of cards if both players choose to pick the cards randomly.

I love this one, but never played at 2. When you can only ever play 3 cards on purpose, you're more free to build redundancy into your hand, or pick things that are just okay but maybe the other guy will play it for you

I really like the resource wheels of this one, but I'm not a fan of most of the other mechanics like the card drafting. Overall this is pretty middling for me as far as Uwe games go.

I agree with Monique. For me it's not that exciting. I played it a lot solo and never really get involved, didn't really care that much about what I was doing. Has a similar slogging vibe in Fields of Arle, compared to the whimsy of Caverna, or the thematic Grandeur of Feast for Odin.

My favorite rule of Uwe’s is “diagonals are forbidden” which amuses me every time…
@robertcrist60592 жыл бұрын
That forced to play mechanism is not for me. I wish it was if you matched it was a positive thing, so maybe three actions on the card, but you can only pick 2 but if you made your opponent play their card you get all three and your opponent only gets 2, and maybe the opponent gets to pick one action and you pick the other one they get to do if you want to keep some of the chaos in. The tiles are so small and have barely any art, overall not a game I would ever consider. Man this Rosenberg guy is a miss for me except for Agricola maybe. Hallertau had some cool stuff in it, the decks of cards, worker placement spots, the resources in the field, but that is Agricola haha. The town hall thing, smashing the rocks was annoying and seems silly. At the Gates of Loyang looks interesting. Beyond that considering the classics a few more to look at, Odin, Arle, Nusfjord are what is left. In my phase of watching content people play games and then wanting to buy them for myself in some sense of recreating the fun I was watching I bought Bohnanza (thanks Game Night!) but haven't played it and who knows if it sticks around.
@BeforeYouPlay2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's totally fair, the forced mechanism was what made this game different from his other designs. We will be covering Fields of Arle by the end of the week or so, and then hopefully *fingers crossed*, a Feast for Odin next week and those two have some similarities but are also very different from his other games.

I'm very put off by that mechanism where someone could have their entire plan ruined by a lucky pick by one player. Especially for such a short game - there's no way to recover in that short amount of time. Losing entire actions next to other players is too much. I think this one is a skip for me.
@Duxa_ Жыл бұрын
Thats the game, there is no "lucky" in this. You are supposed to look at what the other player is doing and pick their cards with no intention of playing them yourself, that way you get to play them for free. For example, if your opponent has no bricks and no clay, but has charcoal and food on the bottom wheel then its a good chance they will try to make bricks, so you pick cards that make clay, to play them for free on their turn. Thats what 90% of this game is about. You arent supposed to play this multiplayer solitaire and concentrate on your own village. I mean you could, but you probably wont win that way. One of the main goals is to be able to play all 5 cards by playing 1 or 2 (depending on player count) that you wouldnt be able to play on your turn but play them for free on opponent's turn, you also screw their plans by taking half the actions away.
