Anywhere from 700-1000ml for lam and 400-500 for filler. Always have more rather than less. It’s not worth ruining a board just for a couple dollars of resin.

Very nice and well produced. What is missing from all of these vids on youtube is what do you do when there is a glitch and how do you recover when things go wrong. You clearly are a professional and it shows by your confident and purposeful movements. You can spot an experienced mechanic on youtube by the way they operate a screwdriver. But even the best of us have those moments when things go wrong. I’m just suggesting that you start collecting examples of when things go sideways and compile a few situations that us mere mortal will face. Great respect to an obviously accomplished craftsman.

Hey, great video!! Super helpful. I had a few questions before I start building my first board. What's the advantage (apart from different colours) of doing a tail and deck patch vs doing 2 full layers of glass on the top and bottom? If it's just a weight thing is there that much of a difference in weight between the two methods that makes doing patches worth it? (Also would there be a significant strength difference between patches vs 2 layers of glass). The second question is what's the difference between putting the fin boxes in before vs after glassing? As I have seen some videos where the fin boxes are put in before the glassing and some are put in after (generally with single fin longboards). If you put the fin boxes in before glassing shouldn't you put the leash plug in at the same time? Sorry if these are newbie questions. Keep up the great videos!
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught 3 жыл бұрын
Good questions mate, So the glassing schedule is usually suited to the board and many longboards do have double layers of glass on bottom, but generally it isn’t needed. The bottom is the part of the board that you’re not standing on ( hopefully ) so 2 layers is overkill. It’s doesn’t sound like much but it will absorb the resin and add weight. The patch is just for the fin boxes to add strength. Same with 3/4 deck patch is to add strength where standing and you don’t stand on the nose section so can loose that bit. But I often do full length patches. Just depends on board. The fin boxes were placed in after glass on this board because of the coloured tint. It looks cleaner IMO. But if I am doing a a clear board I’ll always go under glass. You can also get the leash cups to go under glass but as the board style in the video was slightly retro I went with the leash cup with resin around it.

Hi @Shrednaught, Thank you so much for your videos! They contain so much useful information and are so much fun to watch. They've helped me a lot building my first (3d printed) surfboard for river surfing here in Munich. I'm currently building a foil board from an old surfboard and was wondering, if the fill coat is required to waterproof the board or if the laminate is already waterproof - if you don't sand it of course. I will put a big pad on the foil board anyways, so not much of the top laminate will be visible. I have of course sanded the laps and will do a fill coat on the bottom or the board. I'd be very happy if I could get away with not having to sand and fill the top too. Thanks!

@Shrednaught

This depends on board size and layup. You will use less resin for a clear free lap over a tinted cutlap. For a good start I would get 3 litres total for a standard shortboard. Good Tutorial video, was wondering if their is an advantage of letting the patch cure first? Also did you just cut the excess glass in the rail on the bottom/deck patch after it’s cured? Thanks
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught 3 жыл бұрын
The fin box patch and also the deck patch were both laminated in a green resin tint and the next layers of fibreglass were clear. I allowed the patches to dry so I could cut them nice and clean and there would be no spread of green resin into my clear overlay. Yup, once the patches were about 80% cured I then cut them to my tape lines with a razor. Just a straight 90degree cut following the tape 🤙

It will be a minimal 7ft board in EPS with a wooden stringer in the middle. And also should i do extra layers of epoxy resins after the glassfiber layer? Thanks Dude!
@Shrednaught

Hey mate, I definitely suggest a minimum 2 layers on the deck and one on the bottom. A 7ft mini mal in eps will need some strength and weight isn’t an issue so go with 6oz. Great stuff bro. I just started shaping my 1st board now - a 6'2" Thruster. Great tips on the glassing, which I will most likely watch a couple more times before I do it, but would love to see some of your videos on shaping. 🤙#live_free_share_the_stoke

for you glassing do you use epoxy or just regular resin?
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught 2 жыл бұрын
I use both. It just depends on the foam being used or the request from the person who is receiving the board.
