hello friend...thanks for your clarification...you do a brilliant job... I have doubts...because here I see that you store the entire lamination part of the Bottom. In this case, what have you used resin with paraffin??? Thanks a lot
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop2 жыл бұрын
When you buy normal polyester resin for glassing a surfboard you can actually just buy resin that already has the wax additive or “surfacing agent” mixed in, the resin will be labeled/advertised as laminating resin (without the wax) or sanding resin (with the wax). I actually wasn’t 100% sure what additive is in the resin I use. I did a little digging and for polyester resin it looks like there are two common additives, paraffin or styrene. I’m honestly not sure which is in the resin I buy because I’m buying bulk from my local glass shop and it isn’t labeled. Here is a link to some surfacing agent for polyester resin if it helps greenlightsurfsupply.com/products/polyester-resin-surfacing-wax-agent

quick question, is the hot coat for just cosmetic purposes to make the board look smooth or does it add strength and seal in the fiberglass cloth more?
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop4 жыл бұрын
Just aesthetic really, and on the bottom you want a smooth surface to reduce friction. It doesn’t add any strength and the board is totally sealed by the lam. With a really good sanding job however, you sand off pretty much all the excess so it doesn’t add much weight. All the pro boards are sanded to just a hair thickness😱👍🏻

im learning here. do you have to sand after the fiber glass and what is the point of doing it?
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop3 жыл бұрын
There are 2 steps to glassing a board. 1st you laminate the board, the "lamination phase". This is the step where you glass on the cloth to the blank. The second step is the "hot coat". In this step you brush a thin layer of resin over the top of the fiberglass to make the board nice and smooth and glossy. Regarding sanding, typically after laminating the board, there will be rough spots at the edges of the fiberglass cloth that need to be sanded down and smoothed out before the hot coat. Then after the hot coat you sand and polish the board making it nice and silky smooth (did this off camera). On this lam job, I had a little bit of extra resin sitting onto of the cloth, you can see me sanding off this little bit of extra resin at 2:47 in the vid. Extra resin doesn't add any strength but just adds weight. On a good lam job you shouldn't have excess resin pooling that needs to get sanded off, on this one I was a little worried messing around with the cool dipped tail and didn't squeeze away all the excess.

Great work. Did you shape the blank as well? Over the last 3 years I started shaping & gassing my own boards. I have done 6 now & have started another 2. I'm going to duplicate 2 previous boards & try making 1 thinner in thickness, same dims. The other same thickness but slightly wider dims. I'm doing epoxy & EPS foam bank that I hot wire the rocker & outline from templates I make. (maybe I should also make a video of myself doing a board). Great content. 👍

What’s up Kevin?! Sort of a cool random Story. I didn’t shape this blank, someone shaped it and left it in one of the shaping bays at Bashams, my local surf factory. The guys at Bashams held the blank and had been asking around for a few months, after no one claimed it they put it up for sale. Bought it at a steal price and it’s my all year favorite step up board for pushy fast surf. Hey that’s awesome your shaping boards, and 6 boards in, that’s awesome 👍! Hey tell me about your hot wire cutter?! Is this something built yourself of bought?! How well does it cut EPS?! That would save so much time!

@@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop thank you. By trade I am an Electrican, so I wired the whole set up myself. I got a length of element wire to the size of my bow 700mm long. I had a company build up a step down transformer for me according to the element wire I gave them. 220volts step down to 24volts. There are some easy to follow diagrams on the net. Saftey Key is to earth the transformer correctly. For your protection. I buy a block of foam 600mm by 300mm by 2000mm. Then I get 3, maybe 4 blanks out of it (if one plans your templates correctly. Cutting the foam is best done with 2 people.

Did you do anything to prevent the black and blue pigments from bleeding or was the black fairly stable after soaking into the fiberglass
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop4 жыл бұрын
Great question, resin tinting is a interesting business. Tinted resin will tend to seep a little bit, a couple millimeters max if done right. For those fine black drizzles you just need to pour only enough to saturate the cloth you are directly trying to color, don’t pour excess. Once cloth has taken a darker color it is pretty locked into that color. So after the black drizzles i could pour blue resin over the whole tail and the black lines are preserved. 🙌🏻 Have fun out there

Can you explain which materials did you use on hot coat? What is texture? How much resine and other things?
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop4 жыл бұрын
Vitor, I get questions about this a bunch, I will have to make a video showing and explaining what each step of glassin is. Essentially I use epoxy resin to laminate the board, during this step of the process you lay fiberglass cloth over the board, wet it with resin, and then squeegee off any excess resin, excess resin adds weight but doesn't add any extra strength. The fiberglass cloth hardens and leave a rough bumpy surface "texture". Next comes what is called the hot coat step, you apply a very thin layer of epoxy resin that covers the fiberglass cloth giving the board a glossy flat surface. (I did not have any at the time but when using expoxy, for the hot coat to get a more glossy finish I mix in a wax additive that when sanded gives a Super glossy finish (its called additive F). The amount of resin I use depends on the board, bigger boards require more resin, smaller boards require less resin. For this board I laminated with 40 oz each side and hot coated with 40 oz each side
@corettamundo4 жыл бұрын
Hey, are you sanding down after the lam before hot coating at 2:44? I did the same on 6oz, smoothing the weave but read its reducing the strength. No I dont know if to just hot coat or sand more down and add some 4oz to be safe. tnx
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop4 жыл бұрын
So normally you don’t sand down the weave at all, your right, you are just loosing strength! The reason i was sanding here is that i had left a fair amount of excess resin in the weave during lamination, i hadn’t squeegeed off all of the excess resin. You normally shouldn’t have any excess resin left in your weave, maybe i was just super excited or something doing this multi-tone lam but after i realized there was a bunch of the excess so here i was sanding excess resin down to the level of the weave. You can tell when you have excess because it will fill in the weave and form a smooth glossy surface on top of the weave itself. *note, the one time under normal circumstances you sand after the lamination is sanding down sharp fibers or raised edges on a cut lap! Check out my other vids for a better example of laminating/hot coating 😂👍🏻

how did you do the pictures, something about rice paper I think I heard and do you put the under the cloth ?
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop4 жыл бұрын
It’s super cool, you can print off home made logos on high quality rice paper using just a normal ink jet printer at home. The rice paper becomes translucent (see through) when it gets wet/saturated with resin, so all that you see is the ink! It’s pretty sweet, you can buy high quality rice paper at most surfboard supply websites, @t is my favorite place, or just on amazon. I have been using this rice paper from amazon and it has been working great for me Art Advantage Rice Paper 100 sheets-Pack @t. The one drawback of printing logos at home is that you can’t print any “white colors”, your normal printer leaves blank spots with no color when printing white because the paper is already white. When wet with resin the white spots go clear/translucent. You can have your logos/drawings/pictures or whatever you want printed at @t which uses special printers with true white ink. Hope this helps

Why the Hermes symbole on health? It is for trade (businesses)... at our universities, is it the symbol for business students :p if you use this symbole for health is is quite a bad omen as the other job of Hermes was to bring to the souls to the afterlife (not great message for patients) It is a mistake that became mainstreamed mainly within the US army (although many military people asked to change the logos). The correct one is the Asclepios' s rode (one snake and a rode ad not a winged rode). Content wise: How did you prep the board before the customization? Thanks

glass on glass? May weight increase?
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop4 жыл бұрын
73secrettube, after laminating the board (saturating the fiberglass cloth) the cloth hardens, and the weave has an inherent texture to it. So after laminating you brush on a thin layer of resin called the hot coat, it does add weight (hence you don’t want to add any more than bare essential thickness) but gives boards the smooth surface 🙌🏻
