Oh wow! Didn’t know Scylla had such a tragic story! Also didn’t know Circe had other stories besides that in the Odyssey
@DatcleanMochaJo
@DatcleanMochaJo 10 ай бұрын
That's because its actually a retcon. If you read the original Tale found in the Odyssey none of this is mentioned. She is referred to by "she" but her female form is not mentioned nor Glaucus. She was more akin to the hydra. The backstory of Scylla has changed multiple times. Heck the new backstory mentions she has dog heads around her waist but the video doesn't mention those. Or how formidable she is. Mere weapons can't hurt her and she even rivals the gods.

@@veronicastromberg6755 well, in Medusa's case, at least, it depends on if you read the more Roman or Greek version of her story; the Romans didn't like their version of Athena called Minerva (I think I can't remember, and I'm too lazy to search right now) because she wasn't their patron god of war that was Ares/Mars. So basically, the Greeks loved her and spoke of her as benevolent and Ares as bloodthirsty when the Romans saw it as the opposite. So, in Greek versions, Medusa is evil and vile, whereas in Roman versions, she is a poor woman who was a scapegoat for Poseidon's/Neptune's actions

Fun fact: Scylla is also a kaiju in the MonsterVerse. Her MonsterVerse design resembles a hybrid of a squid, a crab, a spider, and an ammonite. She was previously contained in Sedona, Arizona until she was awakened by King Ghidorah (the only kaiju that refused to obey King Ghidorah's call were Godzilla, Mothra, and King Kong).

This is what many like Glaucus mistake limerence for love. It starts with infatuation, and longing, putting them on a pedestal, believeing they are what they need in their lives to be happy. But then, when something snaps them into reality and the bigger picture, or maybe even a slight flaw in the person they're obsessed with, or damage they themselves have done that does irreversable damage to their source of infatuation, their desire for them deteriorates, and what they perceived as "love" is turned right off. He let his infatuation cloud his mind, and by finding ways to force his fantasy into reality, did irreversible damage to Scylla, who despite being innocent in this whole situation, paid the price for his selfish actions.

I always thought it was Triton who was in love with her. Triton, son of Poseidon and another sea god. These 2 (Glaucus and Circe) weren't in love with those of their desires, they were infauated. Back in those days the people commonly thought love and infauation were the same thing. Scylla's description in other sources say her upper body was normal, but around her hips were multiple heads of vicious dogs and dozens of tentacles underneath.

From Wikipedia: "Charybdis aided her father Poseidon in his feud with her paternal uncle Zeus and, as such, helped him engulf lands and islands in water. Zeus, angry over the land she stole from him, captured and chained her to the sea-bed. Charybdis was then cursed by the god and transformed into a hideous bladder of a monster, with flippers for arms and legs, and an uncontrollable thirst for the sea. As such, she drank the water from the sea thrice a day to quench it, which created whirlpools. She lingered on a rock with Scylla facing her directly on another rock, making a strait. In some myths, Charybdis was a voracious woman who stole oxen from Heracles, and was hurled by the thunderbolt of Zeus into the sea, where she retained her voracious nature."

Just ao people know, just like Medusa, Syclla has many many different interpretations/versions of her tale. The most well known one is the version thats told by sailors more to warn of the dangers of the Strait. Since the danger of Syclla was more about the crags and rocky shoreline seen as a superstitious monster that devoured sailors when it was more the fact rocks would tear apart the hull of ships and men would be thrown overboard in the rough waters, and the terrible whirlpools in the deeper waters of the Strait which were said to be Charybdis a massive sea monster who's maw was actually what created the whirlpools. Pronunciation also changes to. Both "Sigh-la" and "Sil-ah" are proper Pronunciations, but obviously change depending on the interpretation and version of the tales.

The version i read, Glaucus was indeed a mortal fisherman. One day, he saw Scylla taking a bath in her pool and he fell in love with her but she won't even look twice to a mortal man. The Oceanids heard of his woe and turned him into one of them. As the tale goes, the waters of a hundred rivers were poured onto him and his legs was transformed to a long beautiful tail and his hair turned green. He went back to Scylla but the nymph still rejected his love. Heartbroken, he swam away till he rested at Circe's island where the enchantress saw him. She fell for him and offered her love but he is too heartbroken to even respond to it. Angrily, Circe created a potion which she poured in the pool just before Scylla was about to take her morning bath. The rest of the story, we know. 🤔 In this version Glaucus didn't know Scylla's fate or Circe's hand in it. 😪

Circe’s mother is a sea nymph & father is Helios (the sunk). Oceanus & Tethys are her maternal grandparents. It is absurd to think that there is anything in the sea Circe wouldn’t have ever seen.

Didn’t Circe pour the potion into the area where Scylla used to bathe? That’s what I heard, then when she started bathing there, she was confused when she started transforming.

Circe warned him when she said he would be granted all the love he deserved, the love of a monster worthy of a man so superficial, too bad it affected the nymph as well.

This is not the legend. Circe loved Glaukus whom she made into a sea God from mortal, cause he was miserable. After that he became obsessed with other nymphs and cared no more for Circe. Scylla was a typical ‘mean girl’ who bullied Circe throughout her childhood and when Circe found out Glaukus wanted to marry this mean nymph, she turned her into a monster. The story is how Scylla was on the inside the monster she turned into later. Idk where do you guys get this story about ‘poor Scylla’ anyway…

Pronounciation!!!: "Silla" "Karribdus" This is the origin of the saying, "Between a rock & a hard place," it was said, "caught betweenScylla & Charybdis." This is what ancient Greeks called the Staight of Gibraltar.

I thought Scylla's backstory was that Poseidon had an affair with her and his wife was so furious to learn this that she declared "I will turn her into the most hideous female any man ever fled from!" Thinga went from there.
