I usually use a rubber mallet instead of a hammer, it hits the same but doesn't break little pieces off. Most of the force instead goes to bumping the cookie off instead of shattering it. But yeah sometimes it just doesnt work and takes part of the pot with it. Depends on how much glaze overflowed. Lovely combos though!!!🩷🖤🩵

Beautiful results! I have been advised by a few veteran potters that some iron-rich and buff clay bodies benefit from a slow 04 bisq firing with all the venting you can give it until it passes 500f. They say it burns off the organic materials more thoroughly. Food for thought.

Sarah....1st: you are AWESOME 2nd: I feel for you with those first pinhole - but gorgeous - pieces...I've done stuff like that myself, sometimes refiring them with a hold @ the end gets rid of the pinholes, but not sure how you'll handle those stuck cookies. And YEAH on the pinholes on the OUTSIDE (as long as they are NOT sharp!) but should NEVER (be) on the inside. Cant wait to see more pieces from you! Thanks!

on the pitcher...sand the glaze down with a diamond pad and wipe off the residue before putting the emerald falls over it. Then fire only to no higher than a cone 5.5 ish with a hold...fingers crossed. I've had some luck doing this but if the pinholes are too bad sometimes it doesn't work. I get better results when I sand the pinholes down really good first

I adopted her from the SPCA 2 years ago (she was 8 and very overweight) we've been working on it with play time and a good diet...she's got a way to go tho...but I have a thing for chonky cats! they are just so dang cute! I use Laguna #70 often and have no issues. Slow bisque to cone 04. Glaze fire medium speed to a hot cone 6, but my cone 7 isn't bending. Maybe just softening, but not really a bent. The 6 is just a bit over bent. It's very groggy, so I make sure to use a shammy on my rims of the #70 to push down that grog. Then I make sure to sand the rims of the bisqueware, especially if it's a mug/cup that will touch a mouth. Same with handle edges. I get it very smooth.

@@SarahWaltonPottery Slow bisque doesn't affect the texture, as far as I can tell. Just the glaze outcome. I think no matter what, groggy clay will have a little texture to it in the end. Just the nature of the beast ;)

Hey Sarah, OH NO! I am feeling your pain. I don't know if it will help but I find with those kinds of clays, the Camille Hoffman slow cool schedule really helps with pinholing and bloating. Of course, you can't use it for everything but in this case, it may help.

Great video! Your efforts are a huge asset to the clay community. 1) I've had some success when it comes to stuck cookies by putting them into the freezer for a few minutes. Many times they pop right off, and you might even be able to re-use the cookie. 2) Your darker clay bodies are stunning. I learned the hard way that many of those can't be fired higher than ^5. Even knowing that, it has slipped my mind more than once and I put a few in with a ^6 firing and they always come out with bloat. So your taking them to a ^7 is miraculous! 3) The two pieces with Coyote Buttercup are beautiful! Perhaps not what you envisioned, but certainly should be sorted with the other successes.

Hi Sarah. Don’t know if you are familiar with Camille Hoffman firing schedule, but she swears it has taken care of pinholes and other problems. Not sure if your kiln can do a six step ramp and cool, but you may want to google it and familiarize yourself with it. I called her about it. She has been in ceramics 53 years and is a hoot!

YAAAY SO EXCITED TO SEE A NEW VIDEO!! Totally clay related… where did you get your overalls!!! I’m so sorry the clay did that. How crazy! Have you tried bisque firing to a higher cone with that clay? Definitely call the company!! As for the cookies. Make them REALLLLY THIN and put kiln wash on them!! It helps a lot!! If you have a good grinding disc on your wheel you can grind the cookie off instead of breaking it and taking the sides off! Hope that helps. I had a kiln opening yesterday and I had made kiln stilts without the metal pins in them and they hold the pot off the shelf and they worked PERFECTLY!! I had 4 mugs drip like crazy, bottom shelf got to cone 7 1/2!! I also have manual kilns and it is soo hard waiting to turn things on and off etc. I never allow my kiln to shut off in its own. I don’t use a pyrometer. I just put the witness cones in front of the peep holes and I know at approximately what time the kiln should be turned off so I look and watch the cones fall on at least 2 levels to make sure the kiln has gotten to temperature and I run it off. My bottom fires mush higher than the top, 2 full cones last firing! I do stagger all of my shelves as well as leave a gap in the middle. I have found that putting tall items on half of the bottom really helped things every out more. This was so informative! Thanks so much for showing us how you do your bottoms!!

Ha-ha! I got my overalls from a store call Aerie (American Eagle sister store) a couple of years ago, on the sale rack so I couldn't pass it up, they were like $20! I've seen similar ones there from time to time so you never know! I've tried to use my peep holes to read my cone pack but I don't know if it's just me, but I can't see them because the light is just to dang bright. Even if I line them up with my peeps properly, I saw someone use a flash light but that didn't work either...any tips?? I might just shut it off at the 9 hour mark as that seems to be my sweet spot for a ^6 fire in my kiln...The reason why i didn't turn it off was because I did such a slow ramp and had my fan running longer then I usually do, so I thought that maybe it hadn't got to temp...lesson learned! I've used ¼ shelf stilts to prop up my pots before when I ran out of cookies...and you're right, every time I have to break off a cookie I think...why didn't I use kiln wash! 😵‍💫Thank you for all your great advise!!! xo

Bisque fire to a hotter temp for the darker clays to give it more time to burn off what it needs to is what I have had to do working with wild clay from my area. Otherwise I get the same results in the glaze firing with some glazes.

Bummer about the pinholes. I'm not sure the composition of the clay, but I do know that manganese will offgas and will pinhole if you don't do a drop and hold at the end. I tend to avoid clays that contain it, for that reason. Coconut is HUGE! What a sweet kitty! We should all have a studio manager of equal calibur. Thanks for showing your first pieces. I was just looking back at my beginnings and considering a nostalgia post about the progression. It really helps to look back sometimes. Keep 'em coming, and stay centered!

Hi Pat, I suspect youre right about the off gas I love the look of the clay so much so i really have to figure out the best way to fire, I've had great success and some epic fails (as in this video) One viewer suggested that it was/is the Spectrum glaze which may be the case...donno...I'm determined to get to the bottom, and if i figure it out I'll share so maybe you may give it a go Yes Coco is a big girl...HaHa. I adopted her that way and I've been working on helping her slim down...believe it or not she has lost a couple of pounds over the last 2 years...She's now 10 so I don't think she'll get much smaller so I have a 19lbs cat! 🫣 I'm so glad you enjoyed my trip down memory lane with my older pieces...Cheers and thank you for watching!!! 🥰

For the pinholing and run off. Turn the pot upside. Elevate on a kiln stand WITH a stilt and refire (Cookie under so it doesn't drip on your shelf) or just bite the bullet and get Advancer Shelving (your glaze will not stick to them). If the shelves are too much $$$ you can just buy cut off shelve bits to use like glaze cookies. Or just use an angle grinder and or dremel and refire with a hold for 10-15mins.

Just a thought. I make disks that are smaller than the mugs bottom so if there is too much running the drips may reach the shelf but they are still recoverable because the disk keeps the mug raised about a 1/4 inch off the shelf. For you maybe a combination of my disk and yours would do the trick. Great work. Thanks.

Cookies are just a slab, a bit of high fire clay that are sacrificial. You can make them yourself, roll out a 1/4 inch (7mm) slab and cut out the round (Or whatever suits) shape you want, bisque fire them and then you can use them in your glaze firing.

Hi sarah i ordered sunset pink and archies base because i love your mugs so much. I wanted to try the combo on a plate. Do you have any advice or feedback about using them on a plate? Should i do one all.over and then the other only on the rim? And if so, in what order?

Ohhhh Yay!! You are going to love them! Remember to really stir up the Archies Base, it will be a thick goop on the bottom and you have to stir it alllll in. I usually use the Sunset pink First all over x2 then the Archies Base. I've gone with it it all over, I've staggered it back with each coat, and like them both ,but my preference is AB x1 all over, then the second coat staggerd back closer to the rim. I would probable leave the Sunset Pink on it's own on the out side of the plate if you are going to glaze that part bcuz the AB will make the SP run. Cheers! Share with me what it looks like when you get it out of the kiln!

Pinholes can add to a design sometimes. Have you tried sanding them down and buffing the glaze?

Hi Maunie! I have lightly sanded down the sharp edges but in the case of this 'frothing' it was sooo darn extreme that it wasn't worth it. I do struggle with the polishing the glaze back tho, I never seem to be able to get the glaze to shine where I sanded/grinded...do you have a suggestion??

@SarahWaltonPottery I was thinking if you got some super small grain sanding paper they use to polish stones that may help. I've never tried though. The videos look like you have 4 different paper grains to work your way through. I'd practice with one you don't really care for though.

Sometimes, but in this situation, after I did a 3rd fire it was just too much for the clay. Different clays and/or glazes don't always like to be refired. So the way I look at it, I wasn't happy with the results the way that they were, so refiring was the only option. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

the pinholes on the rustic vase actually add to its character..look to be on purpose..I would not smash it
