I'm near 60 years old now. But when I was a kid, my grandfather would take me fishing early in the morning before sun up. Before we started, we would stop at a donut shop in our hometown of Geneva, NY, called Downey Flake." The man who owned it was friends with my grandfather for many years. He had a conveyor system for the donuts, and you could watch the whole process. At 10 years old it was mesmerizing to me. After we had eaten he would give us a bunch of still warm broken donuts and glaze them, and we would take them on our fishing trip with us.I miss that donut shop, and I miss you so much grampa. I thought about you the first time I taught my daughter how to fish and she caught her first one. Thank you for the wonderful memories, I miss you❤

When I was a kid, I used to go to the Krispy Kreme near my house in the mornings and watch them make these donuts with an identical process. They’d hand out free donuts too, from the fresh batches. Delicious.
@jackb.nimble8266 ай бұрын
Same here. Down here in the south, Krispy Kreme used to be everywhere. But there's only one that I know of in my area now (and that one may not still be there. It's been awhile). Dunkin', on the other hand, are popping up like mushrooms. I've never understood how people could possibly prefer the stale bricks they sell there over Krispy Kreme.
@Akhenatonio6 ай бұрын
Krispy Kreme has gone down with taste and quality lately. Recently I had a donut and it tasted terrible. Far removed from when I was a kid sneaking freshly made warm donuts into the movie theater. Dunkin, on the other hand, has consistent quality, but only in the morning.

This machine is actually a huge quality of life! I used to work for a donut company and the most annoying part is having to remove the access dough after the donuts have been cut. First you have one stronger person flatten the dough to the right size and move it to the main conveyor belt. Then one person makes sure the dough is in the right position before it gets cut. Then you have one person who takes off the strings of extra dough in-between the different donuts and then you have two people who pick out the donut holes one by one. Then you have two more people who put it on the conveyor belt for the frying process. This one little machine skips almost the whole process!!
@thereissomecoolstuffАй бұрын
@@Superw0rrio according to your story that means 6 people lost their jobs because of this machine. 6 more homeless.
@Superw0rrioАй бұрын
@thereissomecoolstuff not necessarily. This could be a newer company and they started with this machine and never hired those 6 people. Even if this machine replaced 6 jobs, there are still other things for those 6 to do like making the dough or other ingredient or packaging. If donuts are being made faster you also need more people to habdle that speed of production. If you want to look at it negatively feel free.
@thereissomecoolstuffАй бұрын
@@Superw0rrio it’s a fact. You described 7 people working making donuts. Now it’s 1 person dumping the flour mix into a large bowl. Add exact amount of water. Check the temp on the oil and glaze and just keep the bowl full. What do you think the 6 that were layed off are going to do? They are out of work and rents are $2700 a month in LA. Animation and Artificial Intelligence is going to finish the very entry level skills so many are barely hanging on to. This machine is evil in your example.
@Superw0rrioАй бұрын
@thereissomecoolstuff my guy.... this factory in the video is in Korea. And I told you there are other things you can do. The factory I was working in had hundreds of employees and were always hiring. I'm sure they can give them something else to do. The people that were hired in my company were on contract, so even if their job was replaced, they were not allowed to be let go. By law, they must continue working for the company. Your view of work and reality do not match.
@thereissomecoolstuffАй бұрын
@@Superw0rrio forget your specific for one second my guy. Let’s just look at automation replacing jobs like the one you mentioned and agriculture. Farm equipment is eliminating field work. What do the displaced workers do. The fact that you were a contractor should tell you where we are heading.

I worked for a very small donut shop in Texas that had this machine! The owners had just moved to the state and bought a preexisting donut shop before installing this machine, this thing is no joke. Costs a small fortune and that’s without taking into account shipping costs… 😅 I couldn’t believe they spent as much as they did. The shop closed after less than a year and I still wonder what they did to the machine. It made excellent donuts and to this day the best donut I have ever tasted has been made by one of these.

On the west side of the country, there is a grocery chain called Smith's. They have a warehouse distribution center. In that center, they have a dairy plant, ice cream plant, and bakery. They also have plants for the other store items. I worked in the bakery. We had a donut making machine, but bigger than this one. We had to stand in various places of the machine to make sure everything ran smooth. When you were in the position after the fryer, we would just grab a donut, munch on it a couple bites, and toss the rest in the garbage. The fun days were when we did the filled donuts. There is no automation for that. You pick up a donut in each hand, push them into the filler tubes, and your fingers hit the button to squirt the filling. If you didn't stab right, the donut would blow out, and you just threw it away. One last thing.... when your grocery store bakery says "baked fresh daily," that might be true, but the bread, rolls and donuts might have been made 6 months earlier and frozen like Smith's does.
