Glazing Comparison: Sennelier & Schmincke vs White Nights

I know Im late responding. I love watching color comparison videos. I just wanted to point out that although the paints you used have the same name, every one has a different pigment which make them very different in hue. White Nights is PV19. Sennelier is PR209, and Schmincke is PR207. I have found that PR209, (a true quin red) is very comparable in hue among most brands.. PV19 is really a quin rose. PR207 is warmest, new and I have not found it in other brands so far. Blessings. I enjoy what you share.

Sennelier is ment for layering, that is where it shines, where as white nights and schmincke need more work to get first layer right right away, i have all 3 as well, in mmy visual wc journal sennelier wasnt working to well for me; it seems to love my fabriano jumboblock though, where as white nights and schmincke tend to get blotchy faster on that block. I love all three for different uses

Very interesting video, I love the realistic vibrancy of Senellier, but also The German brand is so beautifull and delicate. The White Nights are so full of pigment, very perfect for an art that wants to hit immediatly who look. In my opinion it doesn’t exist the perfect brand, but the perfect brand for your style and your art. Thank you!

I am one of those people who will soak the paper to remove some of the sizing and stretch the paper. I want my pigments to soak deep into the inner layers of the paper to build up rich depth of color and value. In order to do that you want some of the sizing gone. When you glaze in this way allowing each layer to dry before another layer, you can get a painting that is so rich in color and depth it can be mistaken for an oil painting. Schmincke pigments are ground so fine that they easily sink into the paper. This might be why it seems to fade out more. But its also the only brand that you can keep adding more layers, as many as you want without it looking over worked, leaving you with the richest depth of color. With this method I use, I cannot use Sennelier because it will sit on the surface of even well soaked paper. Before I can get the depth I want it will lift and get streaky & blotchy. Check Susan Harrison-Tustain's work. She a world wide master of this day & uses Schmincke and explains why.

@@monahli1597 sorry for this late reply. Whenever you soak any cotton paper before stretching, some surface sizing will be removed. 140lb Arches for 5 to 7 minutes will be enough. Just put in clear lukewarm water bath. Lift out, press on gatorboard with dry towel and staple right away and leave to dry overnight or be bone dry. Before you add subsiqent lsyers of paint. Make sure layer of paint is bone dry. I use wet into wet with the 1st 3 layers. Susan Harrison -Tustain explains it all on her website.

Actually, I recently did a video in which I briefly talked about how sizing helps watercolors be a more pure color, where paper without sizing makes the color more dull. Because you were using the back side of the paper, that is EXACTLY why it looked more dull. I really like the idea of comparing these colors in what are basically functional color swatches on the same page, but more useful. I didn’t like sennelier or schmincke at first because they seemed so weak. I’m still trying to find a way to work with Schmincke that I like, but I have managed to fall in love with Sennelier. I use them most for portraits because you can layer on and on forever and it’s easy to get good subtle undertones in the shadows and things without them looking obnoxious. I use them a lot when I take paint with me to draw at restaurants and parks and such!

That's a good point, I am new the the sizing concept of paper, have heard a few times about it but not actually fully understanding what it is. All I know is that when the paper is sized the watercolour will look more vibrant on it as it sort of sits on top rather than getting absorbed. Need to look into that more. Billy Showell uses the reversed side of the moulin du roy paper for her botanical paintings, and a few of my viewers recommended to do that too. But thanks for letting me know, the seizing factor for the swatches is definitely important. :)

Alyona's Watercolour Creations The Mulin Du Roy Hot Press has a lot of sizing and repels water and is a difficult hot press to work with on the right side, which is why Billy will use the under side. However, colours on the right side of the MDR hot press are very very vibrant, more so than any other hot press I have used, the colours sing when dry. Arches isn’t the best for vibrancy in my experience, I’m not keen on the paper at all, I much prefer Mulin Du Roy COLD press. Sennelier paints offer a luminosity that is hard to beat when used correctly, they are made for glazing, a steady build up of light glazes is the way to go. White Nights appear vibrant yet flat, not delicate & not my choice to do a professional piece with. I much prefer watercolours that require glazing to build luminosity, it’s the sign of the good watercolour IMHO.

The best 100% cotton watercolor paper brands have internal sizing, meaning the paper is soaked completely in gelatin and the sizing is just as much on one side as the other as well as inside the inner fibers. Kyomii thank you for the insights. I’m new to watercolors and have been binge reading everything I can possibly find on paper, brushes and paints. Personally I prefer as white a background as possible and have found that so far the papers I’ve bought have a slightly natural yellowish colour so I am now keen to order the Mulin Du Roy as it’s a white paper. I wonder if the reasons behind Billy’s issues with this paper are due to the fact that she uses wet on wet? Hence the struggles to get this paper to absorb the water? I’m going to be taking her classes once my paints arrive but I also plan to take Anna Mason’s online classes, as far as I can tell Anna doesn’t do wet on wet but also does the layering. The possibilities are endless...

I have a 24 pan set of Sennelier and Schmincke, but my first love is White Nights. They were my first professional brand and they’re still my comfort paints. I love the flow of watercolors but in my personal work I use them in a very controlled way, almost like ink or drawing with paint, so the controllability of White Nights always made them so easy to use. My other love is Holbein for the same reason. They’re so easily controlled but both brands are so vibrant. I do love Daniel Smith, Schmincke and Sennelier and W&N but like you said, they are all lovely and all do what they’re supposed to do and they all do it amazingly but they’re all different. They have different properties and qualities and they all have strengths and weaknesses. It’s nice to know that there is a wonderful, professional brand of beautiful watercolors for whatever style and preferences you have.

I was considering doing that at first, but the colour was already so intense that there was no necessity in a glaze. If I would have done a glaze on White Nights it would start looking "black", meaning the colour would turn so dark that you no longer would see the beauty of it. This was a brilliant comparison and, although I already own Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton paints I will definitely be acquiring some Sennelier and possibly Schmincke now! I’m sorry, but I’ve just never been a fan of White Nights. Although the vibrancy of their colours is great, to me they always end up looking flat (maybe it’s just me LOL). Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us. Once I decided to take art seriously I started purchasing all I could over a year ago. My studio will be complete in about a week and I cannot wait to get started. I have fiddled a tiny bit with journals...more like doodling, nothing serious. I purchased a ton of Sennelier...but found them odd as well and so many people seemed disappointed with them I was getting a little sad about my investment. I also have a huge stock of Daniel Smiths and just recently got 18 of the Schmincke. From all I saw on the Sennelier it just seems like I would have to learn a little differently with them. Your videos are such a helpful tool! Your right, different paints for different reasons :) I no longer have buyers regrets on the Sennelier!

Oddly enough I only had comments from people saying that they love Sennelier, which was hard for me because as a watercolour enthusiast I wanted to love them as well, but I just couldn't love them the way I love White Nights, Daniel Smith, Mijello or Schmincke or recently discovered QOR! I would say don't get rid of your Sennelier watercolours, keep them just for botanicals or floral illustrations that kind of a thing. Schmincke I find interesting, on one side they are definitely softer than other watercolour brands on the other they have colours that are beautifully vibrant and transparent. With Daniel Smith I have gone through a rediscovery recently, as you might have noticed in that 12 ultimate watercolours video 6 were Daniel Smith. So yes every one of them brings something pretty special to the artist's table :) I find keeping an art journals such a neat and satisfying thing to do! Even if you just want to doodle like you said, eventually it all connects. Things that I used to do art-wise years and years ago would resurface in the past 12 months. :) Have a lovely weekend! x

Hi there. I was a little disappointed that you didnt glaze the White Nights poppy as much as you did with the other two paints. I would have liked to see how it would have looked after at least one glaze. I have a set of White Night and I find the fact that the paint simply refuses to move even wet on wet, rather annoying. Would you have any idea why this is or can you hazard a guess please. Thank you for your video. It was really interesting to see the three different paints compaired that way.

Just add a bit of ox gall (or wetting medium maybe?, never tried it myself) if you want a watercolour to move more.

I'm glad I invested in the right brand. Both of their stores here in Paris is a delight. The sennelier here just looks so realistic/ organic especial in terms of the layers. I think this is what I need. The schminke is pretty soft but you definitely know it's a drawing. I can't explain it. The sennelier just evokes that old timey nostalgia feeling from watercolor paintings. And since they pride themselves on being the choice for impressionists and my style leaning towards that... I'm happy and content with my investment.

Do you ever spray/spritz the White Knight set prior to using them? I find they flow very well when the palette is sprayed with water and allowed to sit for 2 min or so before dipping in. The colors move much better. If I want control, I just wet with my paint brush.

It really depends on what kind of painting you like to do. If you are still trying to work it all out, Sennelier makes a tiny kit of 8 half pans for around US$25. They were my first Sennelier paints and really helped me know what to get. You could pick out a few Schmincke half pans to try too for comparison. Start small, experiment, paint, and discover what you like.

The Sennelier looks more natural.. The White Night looks really harsh and hard lined and the Schminke looks kind of wishy-washy. You may have just made up my mind for me, but maybe the Sennelier tubes are better than the pans.......

Hevva67 For myself, I use the pans for travel palettes and the tubes for the studio palette. The tubes seem slightly more vibrant in my experience yet your mileage may vary.

Question Alyona, I have also wanted to grab a set of white knights. on Amazon the St. Petersburge is more expensive than the Nevskaya Palitra ones, is there a difference? It doesn't appear to be from everything I have looked up but I have to wonder as the price is very different from each other. Thanks.

They are the same but different same brand anyways St. Petersburg is the professional line Sonnet is their student grade., hope that helps.

Basically Nevskaya Palitra is the "brand", White Nights is the name of the artist grade watercolour range. So you won't go wrong by buying White Nights. White Nights happen in St.Petersburg, hence why the set was called White Nights and the brand is established in St.Petersburg as far as I know. There is no mention of White Nights in 'Sonnet' as they are a separate range, and yes they are student grade. And they both are by Nevskaya Palitra. Confusing I know :)

Schminke is my favourite for landscape paintings, but not for botanical one, For landscape Schminke’s Color mutation is great next day,but on botanical one their Colors are so dull.

Hi! Very nice video, Alyona, but I am still doubting about my first watercolour set. 😂 Can anyone advice me on whether I should buy White Nights or Sennelier (the la petite variant, as I read that although being cheaper there's not that much difference to the artist grade one - and since I am not an artist nor wealthy)? Tess Might I suggest trying the Sennelier 8 ½-pan set? It is the one in the little white tin? It has the primaries and allows one to try out the paints before making a bigger investment. You can also fine a starter set of Sennelier tubes, 5 in total, for about the same price. Both are excellent beginner sets and are under US$25.

Comparing the Watercolour pigment between Jackson's own brand and Sennelier they are exactly the same pigments for each colour also the binder and tube size 21ml is the same. Jackson own brand is cheaper. Implies Sennelier makes Jacksons own brand watercolour paint.

What is the pigment number on your White Night quin red? I beleive it may be a different pigment number than the other two. Sennelier and Schmincke is a pigment PR209. White Night, I believe is PV19. So that will explain why its so much brighter, darker and cooler because that how PV19 is. Its actually a Quinacridone Rose/Magenta. More than one watercoor brand will call this a Quin Red.

re-watching this video after some month, I can now contribute something :-D the quin.... colours could be the issue, for what you want to achieve. not only schmicke has these intense quin... colours, that tend to look flat. for what you do, quina.. colours often don't behave like some artists like. I have heard from some artists now (and I mean master-classe level e.g. even Thomas Schaller mentions it at one point), don't use those all together. no matter wich brand. I can't say anything about Sennelier. I only had two very small tubes for experimenting as an absolute beginner. those were disappointing, which says nothing. but I have the white nights set (sadly - baught to quickly and too many pans at once), and I think, they are just different behaving colours all together. more rough and so. That it states quin....red may only refer to the hue. and the information they provide on their website is so low. I assume, it might be that. I only know, the moment, I want to mix and match, white nights is disapointing. when it comes to layer with different colours, the same. and only using one of the many affordable colours for one area and another for the next area. this to me is almost like painting a colouring book or for illustrations. I am not into that look. the moment you try something else, it is a struggle. I know, some Russian artists work with them. I still think, for them it is also a hastle. they just got used to it. the moment, they could afford something else, I bet the switch. Although those quin...(can't spell it - sorry) seem to be popular among some youtubers and for some, who like flower paintings, all in all I think, they are not so easy to work with and usually look flat. and that is why, I would like to see another comparison - with a different shade :-D It's like filling out a whish list for Christmas

willie cheng Sennelier has two starter sets to choose from. One is the small 8 half-pan set for under US$25 and the other is a five tube set with the primaries and a couple other colors. It is also under US$25. Both can be found at Jacksons Art. I liked the 8 ½ pan set as my first set of Sennelier as it had the 3 primary colors plus others. It was the perfect way to try them out.

I meant to say “is it a good thing to not practice blooms?” - traditional watercolour artists try to avoid blooms but I find the blooms are a lot more appreciated in the modern watercolour art. Also depends on the style of the art. But having said that, personally I love blooms and find them stunning, especially with granulating or separating colours. :)

Schmincke is over rated imo. I find many of their watercolours chalky and opaque, more like gouache. You are correct in saying they have a larger drying shift. I think this is due to their pigments being corser - less finely ground, however, when you look at their colour chart, a high percentage are hues of two or more pigments, which means mixes are more likely to make mud. W&N and Sinnelier are beautiful watercolours. Excellent for glazing. The pigments are very fine and between the two brands I have found the best - pure, fine pigments for my various pallets. I haven't tried White Knights, but on the basis of this test I'll try a CMY a

I'm really surprised you find Schmincke "chalky and opaque", and I think Schmincke is know for its very fine ground pigments, but I maybe mistaken with this last one.

Lol, you wash the pigments away with your “wetting the pan”. Just buy an empty spray bottle, fill it with water and spray your pans before painting.

If you do a comparison, it is best to do on the same paper for both/all. Papers can effect the result so it would be a unfair comparison . You would also need to compare the same pigment codes, or this too is an unfair and not a correct comparison. So I am disappointed in your review, as this is not a fair comparison

This is an excellent review for Schmincke v Sennelier but totally wrong to have White Knight in with those: WK is a much inferior, student/amateur/beginner brand whereas the other two are choices of professionals so you are not comparing like for like: as your result showed! but well done for attempting!

I prefer White Nights to Sennelier watercolour by far, the pigment ratio to binder is in my opinion far more superior! As far as I know White Nights are artists grade watercolour, they have a separate range that is student grade. :)

Good to know about White Nights as they are REALLY cheap (price-wise) in my town. But I mean CHEAP as half the price of Sennelier and 1/3 the price of Schmincke!
