Art teacher here looking for a useful video to refresh my glaze knowledge, as it's been a few years since I was in a school with a working kiln. All I can say is, wow. Absolute goldmine of a video. Don't think they covered half of this in my undergrad ceramics course. Everything about this video and your studio is inspirational as an Art Educator. Kudos.

The pdf is absolutely wonderful. I opened a second browser and watched them side by side. I too was amazed at your organization. I had Uni of Cincinnati art teachers when I first started (now in Fl) and they were not nearly as organized or as helpful. You were so good during COVID too. I didn't have a wheel /kiln back then but I watched faithfully and so glad I did. Thank you Thank you Thank you.

I live in the UK and I'm a new potter. As a person with dyslexia I find it hard to understand and learn things, but not with you. It takes a special teacher to be able to teach in a way people with dyslexia can understand and you are one of those teachers. I would just like to say thank you, and thanks for sharing all your videos. The first video I watched of yours had me hooked and I new that that's what I wanted to try. I find the whole glazing a little confusing but I'm going to watch and watch again untiI understand a little bit more and I'm going to watch this video to see if it helps. If at first you don't succeed, try and try again and I most certainly will. Thanks again Karen 💖

This is such a great video! Thanks so much for posting it. There are so many ceramics videos and it can be so hard to find a really straightforward video where an intelligent person is explaining all the ways to glaze without loads of talking crap, making the video 10 times longer than it needs to be. You have answered so many questions i had about glazing. I am doing my first day ever using a potters wheel and I am so jealous there are schools out there where you can do this as a normal part of the school day. My school definitely didn't offer anything like this back in my day!

Your studio is so beautifully organized! The dry sanding makes me nervous about silica dust. It looks like just a small amount, but wetting before sanding off bits might be nice.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass Жыл бұрын
Absolutely!! The only sanding is actually using a grinding stone, or sometimes my abrasive pads- and I normally encourage them to use water! I never allow kids to sand greenware- and when they use my grinder cart outside on their glaze fired pieces, they always use a mask!

@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 4 ай бұрын
The reason I tell my students not to shake the jars of glaze is because inevitably someone won’t have screwed the lid on tightly and someone will shake it. The lid flies off and the glaze goes everywhere! If you’re in your own studio and have your own glazes, you won’t need to worry about that! 😉

Wonderful video. Wish you had mentioned it’s ideal to refine the surface of a piece before it gets bisque fired to avoid needing to sand and that sanding bisque ware should be done by wetting pot to avoid clay dust. It’s so hard getting people to break the bad habit relying on sanding instead of refining before firing. Without these safety habits clay dust is flying around the studio and settling into lungs.

The purpose is to catch glaze drips before it gets to my shelves! I make the kids do them as I want the responsibility on them if they misapply their glaze and it runs and fuses to the patty. As a new teacher I was so frustrated with the time I had to spend cleaning my shelves because of their carelessness- and this has saved me hours of cleaning up messes. Occasionally bad runs do happen, but the majority of the time I give the kids the responsibility of breaking off their patty from their pot and grinding the sharp stuff. They can also be bisque fired, kiln washed and reused. (I do that at home- but at school I fire them raw with a preheat to dry!)

Love your videos thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge. What are the clay patties for, do they go into the glaze firing?

The patties are designed to catch glaze if the kids misapply or have a glaze mishap. I fire them raw- but preheat the kiln so they don't blow up.

This video inspired me to try the technique "Tape Resist Over Glaze" but the tape I used didn't stick to the glaze at all. Can you share which tape you used for that technique? The pot turned out so gorgeous! This video was SO SO SO helpful. LOVE IT

Hi Christine- the tapes I used are noted in the video description!!! I have links in there! I will say, electrical tape is usually great- and I list others too!

This is fantastic for the public school system in Ohio to be teaching ceramics to the students. This is what every school here in the U S should do

Many high schools do! I’m lucky enough to teach in a large enough school that I can specialize in ceramics instead of teaching multiple art subjects!
