Paul, you already replied to my question before, but thanks anyway. It shows your dedication to your viewers. You mentioned below that you're making more videos. Yay, can't wait to see them!! Can you show us how to make the kitchen cabinets to look high end thru the use of trim and mouldings? I would really, really, really love to learn how to do it, how to make the kitchen cabinets look custom. Thanks in advance, Paul. You are a darling.

Hi Ann, I just realized! I guess KZbin sent it to me twice, anyhow, I will have a new video with bead board very soon and I will have another one on adding 4.5" crown on top of the cabinets. I will have to put one together, showing how to add more height. I usually add a piece of base molding upside down on the top of the cabinet and put crown on that. it makes a nice custom look. Thank you for the nice comment! Paul

Ok Paul, I'm ready to order my stuff. But just making sure I got my steps down 1. Clean everything 2. Sand flat surface with the grain, 100grit vibrate sander 3. Wipe doors down with acetone 4. Single coat of grey auto primer 5. Wet sand that with 400-500 grit 6. Paint good oil base paint with the color of my choice. 7. ???? Wet sand that oil base coat also? To help get rid of brush strokes? 8. Add accent oil based glaze clean w/ mineral spirits (Van Dyke Brown by general finishes) 9. Finish with 2 coats of Deft satin clear coat. 10. Enjoy Do I got that down correct? I am so pumped to do this. Getting new countertops soon and wanted to do this before the install at the end of summer.

SCOTT DOYLE Hi Scott, you mentioned that you are looking at a spray gun to paint your kitchen cabinets with. I have a few different sprayers for different jobs, I recently purchased a Wagner Flexio Sprayer and it is an incredible unit for the price. It runs about $150.00. I bought mine at Lowes and I have used it on several jobs. I wanted a small HVLP that was lightweight and easy to clean. Well, it is much better than I expected.It comes with 2 cup guns. One for heavy materials and the other for light materials. I spray straight latex with the larger one and I spray lacquer paint with the other one. I was surprised at how smooth the lacquer came out. Pre catalyzed lacquer is as thin as water and it cannot be sprayed too heavy, for it will run. I plan on doing a video on this machine in the near future. I am painting my house right now and I haven't been able to use my Graco 190 airless sprayer do to breezy weather conditions. I broke out the Wagner and my over spray is minimal. HVLP sprayers will spray with low pressure dry, warm air. Good luck and keep in touch! Paul

Paul - Love your work. You mention you have other videos on updating existing cabinets. I would like to see more of what you have done like adding the bead board on the ends. Love that look. Also now cabinets are taller. I've seen that you can add 6-8 in on top of a cabinet and trim it out with crown molding for a nice custom look. Would love to see you do that in a video.

I think I'm going to try this on my antique white cabinets, but just outline the edges. I bought General Finishes Winter White glaze and tried 2 doors. Seems to stand out enough to give it dimension. Good idea about the mineral spirits, didn't know that tip before

When do you choose to use a "glaze with color added" versus using a "colored stain or wood stain as your glaze" ? Or do they have basically the same ingredients? The glaze I use is waterbased. Are your stains considered oil based?
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 8 жыл бұрын
+Lisa Bevill Hi Lisa, That's a good question. I usually wing it, if I have supplies that match my project I will use it. In other words, I have no particular preference. I also like either water base or oil stain, but I do prefer using oil glaze or an oil base stain when glazing accent lines. I find that oil base glaze is smoother than water base glaze. I would like to point out that the rules for stain are different than rules for paint. You can use a water base paint on top of oils stain but you cannot paint water base paint on top of oil base paint unless you sand, or scuff the painted surface. I hope this helps. Thanks! Paul

great video. I'm just getting ready to paint my bathroom cabinets but still need help. What steps did you take to get to the door at the beginning of the video? Clean, sand, prime and paint? What kind of paint is best for the bathroom? And after the glazing process is there something else that needs to be applied to protect the finish? Thanks so much
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis, Yes, I wipe the cabinets down with acetone, or mineral spirits,then I sand and prime. You can use a good semi gloss or gloss paint, I prefer latex paints because of the fumes, but oil will hold up better. I prefer oil base glazing, it is much easier to work with and it can be easily removed with mineral spirits. I use Deft satin clear coat to seal everything. No need to spray your cabint with clear if you do not glaze it. The cabinet may have dull streaks in it when you apply glaze and wipe it off. Deft Satin clear will even it out. Good Luck! Paul

Pardon me for asking more questions. I noticed now that you applied oil stain over latex then finish it with oil glaze. What is the difference in look between stained paint and glazed paint? Most glazing videos I see use glaze over paint, and use glaze again to highlight the door edges.
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 10 жыл бұрын
amscon You can glaze your cabinets with an oil based stain or glaze. If you want a certain color,you can mix any color paint with your clear glaze. I use latex whenever possible, but I prefer oil based glaze. It goes on smoother and it adheres well over latex. You can put oil on top of latex but you cannot put latex on top of oil. Clear glaze can be purchased at most hardware, or home improvement stores. I hope this helps.Thanks!Paul

Hi amscom, I'm sorry for taking so long to get back. Sometimes KZbin does not notify me of new comments. I use latex paint whenever I can. You can apply an oil stain on latex paint and it will stick. I prefer oil based glaze because it goes on smoother and it is easier to work with. P.S. You cannot use latex over oil, it will not stick. Thanks! Paul

Please help. We just bought a condo with old thermofoil cabinets. We want to save money and peel the cabinets, paint and glaze the cabinets with off white paint (can you suggest a glaze color?). What steps should we take? peel, sand then what? Thank you so much for your help!
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 9 жыл бұрын
+Chrissy Fifi Hi Chrissy, If the thermofoil is still in good shape, I would not attempt to peel any away. You can lightly sand it with 400 grit sandpaper, clean it with denatured alcohol ans prime it with ether a good oil base primer or an automotive primer. I personally like using gray automotive primer in a rattle can. It covers very well, it has excellent adhesion and is inexpensive. The color for your glaze would be a personal reference. Browns and dark grays or black is popular. If you have gray tones on your walls and floor, I would suggest gray or black. If you are using earth tones, you may want browns. Some off whites have gray tones and some are more creamy, you may want to take that into consideration as well. Thanks! Paul

Paul, I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel. Can I glaze hampton bay white cabinets from HD? They are obviously already finished. Can I sand them a little or just lay glaze on them as is or would i have to sand, then prime, then glaze? The door fronts are solid wood so I would think I could do this. Any advice???
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 9 жыл бұрын
Hey HollyBerryRN, You should just be able to clean and glaze them, If they are painted wood, the glaze should stick on them. I use Deft satin clear after I'm done, It will even out the sheen. I use oil base glaze. It goes on smooth and it can be removed rather easily with mineral spirits. It comes in handy if you make a mistake! good Luck! Paul

I hope this isn't a dumb question but is that real wood you are glazing? My cabinets are real wood and I'm very nervous about beginning the glazing process (i've already painted them antique white) because I just want the glaze in the details like you did in this video...I do not want my whole cabinet glazed...will I have time to wipe it out of the wood grain if I try this on my wood cabinets? Thanks!
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 10 жыл бұрын
Deanna Parrish Hi Deanna,This is a good question, you are looking for an accent glaze. This is when you add glaze on the detail, such as lines. If you use mineral spirits and oil based glaze, you can easily wipe it off. It is very easy to work with. If you do not like what you see, you get a rag with mineral spirits and clean it off. You can try it again until you get it right. Just remember to spray the door with Deft clear. I always use the satin clear. This will make the paint look even. Thanks!Paul

+Patrick McMurray Hi Patrick, It can be difficult finding glaze in your neighborhood stores. I usually get mine online. You can find it on Amazon and the prices are usually good. I prefer an oil base glaze, it is easier to work with and it goes on smooth. You can put an oil base glaze on a latex paint and you can put latex paint on an oil base primer. You cannot put a latex paint over an oil base paint without sanding, scuffing or priming first. Thanks! Paul

Would you believe we can't get that either? Our wonderful politicians have banned Paint Thinner, Lacquer Thinner, Naphtha, Turpentine, Denatured Alcohol and Kerosene, to name a few. The replacement they sold me at Home Depot is VOC compliant "Brush Cleaner". It says it removes Oil and Latex Paint (which I'm not sure we want to do), and contains acetone, petroleum distillates and Methyl Acetate. Any thoughts?
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Timothy, My 1st thought is that we clean house on all the self serving politicians. Elect real people that are willing to represent and not dictate. Having said that, I have used Valspar water base Antiquing Glaze on oil base cabinets as an accent glaze. It will adhere to oil or latex and you can wipe it with a damp cloth. I was told that Minwax wiping stain can also be used, but I have never tried it myself. I will look into this situation and experiment myself. If I have good findings, I will post it. Do you have a factory finish on your cabinets, or did you paint them? I will try to point you in the right direction. Thanks! Paul

If you used a water base paint you can use any water base glaze, stain or even paint to add an accent glaze to your cabinets. Quick question. I have wood cabinets that we had professionally painted white (oil based) but now I want to glaze them because they are too white. I know I need to use oil based glaze but if I use the mineral spirit technique, will it take off the paint since its oil based and not latex?
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 9 жыл бұрын
Stephanie Bowers Hi Stephanie,Oil base paint comes off rather easily when it is not completely dry. Once oil base paint is fully dry, paint thinner with mineral spirits will not harm it. Just be sure not to rub it too hard. Just add your glaze and wipe it off. If you make a mistake, wipe your glaze completely off and start over. As always, I would test it on an inconspicuous spot or a sample piece of painted wood 1st. I personally have never had any oil base paint come off during this process. I hope this helps!Thanks!Paul

@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Saleh, You can use oil or latex paint on top of oil or latex primer. Primer is meant to be used as a base for paint. You cannot paint over oil base paint with latex unless you prime it or lightly sand it. They also make a product called liquid sandpaper that will de-gloss oil paints, so the latex paint will stick to it. You can use a water base clear over latex paint, but you may want to get a small block of wood and test the compatibility of the glaze and clear. I personally like to use oil base glaze over oil or latex paint. I also use mineral spirits to remove the excess glaze. It may make the paint a little dull, but once the clear is applied, it will get glossy again. Do Not rub the mineral spirits, just lightly wipe it or you may actually remove the paint as well as the glaze. Hope this helps. Thanks! Paul
