Took so many steps, used professional equipment to spray paint and lacquer (mistake as lacquer doesnt hold up ina kitchen well) and still didn't do the inside of the cabinet. Imagine both sides of doors and drawers. No way!

Many people get rid of oak cabinets because they want to update. Unfortunately, they have substandard particle board or laminate cabinets installed and remove solid oak which is more durable. The ceruse painting technique retains the beauty and grain of oak while updating the finish. Thanks for sharing this painting technique; it's a game changer.

I agree. Most people don’t understand or they can’t visualize what the oak cabinets can look like so they choose what they can see in samples in front of them or pictures from a magazine. That’s one big reason they need to be shown samples of actual oak cabinet doors that have been refinished.

Just finished 41 cabinets in my kitchen! Top cabinets are off-white with dark gray glaze; bottoms navy with pewter glaze. I did it in sections and it took 3 months. Definitely labor-intensive, but the difference is amazingly beautiful. Wish I could add photos of before and after. Thanks for the inspiration.

@@adrianak.1615 because the bottom coat is a primer. So it adheres to the wood. The glaze is a surface coat. When you sand, you sand very lightly with a high grit so as to only remove the glaze and not the paint underneath it.

Thank you for posting this video, I've done cerusing in different way, I like to share with everyone here: 1- After wire brushing, a complete sanding is done, making sure the hard grain is sanded smooth, this way, less sanding is required after glazing, it will reduce the chance of sanding through the base coat. 2- A primed surface is too porous and not ideal for a cerusing application, so a clear coat applied over the base coat crates a much smoother surface to do the glazing step, if this part is sprayed, it will usually lay on the hard surface and will not affect the soft grain, where the glaze will be collected. Old timers used to apply a size coat, which is a clear coat reduced to 50% of finishing material plus 50% thinner. A primed surface is good for other glazing techniques, like distressing, but generally not a good idea for cerusing. 3- An oil based glaze has more of open time, so cleaning is much more simpler and requires less sanding. In case of using a water based glaze, use retarder to have plenty of time to clean up the excess glaze. 4- Use a squeegee to clean the glaze, it will automatically leave the glaze into the grain, and the hard grain is left clean. 5- Apply two coats of clear coat, let it dry and cure completely, buff to desired sheen.

I have a similar project coming up where we will be doing something similar although I will be filling the grain inside the profiles after first coat of vinyl with Bin white shellac primer then second coat the full door so when we apply the glaze (I will be using a fast dry spray glaze), the glaze will showcase a slightly lighter effect in the profiles while the flats pop with the ceruse finish! I am looking forward to this kitchen job as my client was going for a little old world and modern or contemporary finish so I will be replacing the face frame hinges and knobs with an oil rubbed bronze which will tie in with the slightly creamy off white basecoat and medium brown glaze! Very nice video and great technique 👌🏽

The process is fairly straightforward, but still currently a bit beyond my ability level with the tools involved, the cost of tools and materials, and a place to do the work, but when I have the means, I definitely want to do this! this is awesome, my father did my grandparents kitchen with white oak back in the early 80s and its so high quality it would be foolish to rip it out but it's kinda dated now. His panels are flat, 1 inch thick and he rounded the corners off about the curve of a quarter. All the grain is mirrored, panels are huge. I bet that kitchen would cost a fortune now. I'm fairly certain it's all solid core too, all his furniture is solid, no mdf. Ive never seen another kitchen like it. By the time I was old enough all we did was raised panel on every single job. I bet if we sell that house some idiot would rip that kitchen out. I think I'll try to replace it before that happens. move it.

My whole life I've seen either plain wood cabinets or thickly painted where it's just not worth the work to try to repair them. Or the real high end custom ones. This is the first time I have ever seen someone paint a cabinet and it actually turns out looking great. looks good

I’ll so excited! I want to do this in my bathroom, because I’m redoing the color scheme and layout in there, with purchasing and planning having started a year ago, so I could afford to do it the way I want the FIRST time. Searched for a video to do the “ceruse” technique and found you on the FIRST try! Love your way of explaining the process, and I think I can actually do this myself, with time and patience. I did this in my kitchen with pickled oak (original) and used a lighter brown stain. I love it. I had to do all of the interiors too. It didn't feel quite complete. I know nobody but me cared, but that's OK. I'm picky. 😂 Thanks for the great video.

Just purchased a rehab .It has oak cabinets in good condition. I normally would replace since oak is not popular. Look forward to trying ceruse. I love the way yours came out. I know it’s out of style, but I just bought my house that was built in 1976, and all the woodwork in the house is golden oak, and I love it. I’m not one to jump on the trend bus, because things come and go out of fashion so quickly that you have to constantly update to stay in fashion. It’s much easier for me to have a tried and true classic or vintage look. Also if I were to do that finish on my cabinets, I would have to remove all of the tile backsplash which is a sandstone color and I’d need new countertops after that. That’s a whole lot of work and a whole lot of money, and I don’t want my kitchen out of commission for longer than a day. I do love the look of an all black and white kitchen, with granite countertops and white subway tile backsplash and I saw one done with a black porcelain farmhouse sink that looked spectacular with all black appliances. It was gorgeous. But like I said the house is new to me and they kept it in excellent condition put new luxury vinyl flooring in all the main rooms and new Corelli countertops that are off white with small flecks of browns. All the kitchen and baths are golden oak as well and have the same sandstone tile and the floors are terracotta 12x12’s which I’m perfectly happy with. I may not win any hot trend awards but I’m a winner in my mind. I came from a 1950’s ranch house with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths in Long Beach California and I had just finished it’s complete remodel, though I went for restoring it to its original finishes and updated the bathrooms in black and white which came out beautifully. I sold that house in April of 2020 just as the lockdowns went into effect and I paid $301k for the house in 2010. I sold it for $649k and moved to the country in northeastern Texas, and bought a 4 bedroom 4 bath 2600 sq ft brick ranch house for $300k. I was able to pay off my old mortgage my second mortgage and pay for the new house in cash, and still had enough left over to buy new furniture and state of the art washer and dryer and pay for the arm and a leg cross country movers who did all the packing and moved me. I just couldn’t be happier and I love this part of Texas right on the red river and the Oklahoma border, it’s very lush and green here and people are really friendly.my lot is .67 of an acre in a nice tucked away part of town with all matching brick ranch homes and a private lake. I have 21 zones in my front yard irrigation system and a huge back yard that was all landscaped by the former owner who owns the city nursery. So it’s just stunning. I subscribed to your channel I really liked this tutorial and look forward to seeing more of your work. I sure could use your skills to do some custom cabinetry for me. Have a blessed day.

Folks, when you do this type of refinish, please do the inside of the panel too. Nothing looks worse than seeing a restrained or repainted cabinet and the inside is still original… also, keep in mind when you work on these cheap honey oak cabinets, the end caps of the cabinets are not solid wood, they are veneer and you can’t sand down veneer like solid wood.

I would probably just do the inside whit and not worry about the glaze where it won't be visible anyway, but definitely can't leave the old finish on the inside.

This process would take FOREVER if I did my kitchen cabinets. I just put new hardware on my cabinets, new Quartz countertops, backsplash, vinyl flooring, my kitchen looks great, and the golden oak doesn't bother me anymore. 😉

I think he covered that detail. These oak cabinets are not custom but I would not call them cheap.
