Great info. I'm going to add this - never tin a wire that is going to be gripped by a screw. It will tighten nicely at first, but over time the soft solder will creep and the connection will loosen. It probably won't go completely open circuit, but it will go high resistance. This will allow corrosion to start, and the performance of the cable will continue to deteriorate.

When are you required to use a 4 wire connection cable? Does the type of loudspeaker matters on this subject weather you use 2 wire cable or 4 wire cable?
@GLBProductions2 жыл бұрын
A 4-wire cable would be used when all four terminals are connected at both ends of the cable - typically this would be when connecting a biamplified loudspeaker to a compatible amplifier output, using +1/-1 for the LF and +2/-2 for the HF. So yes the type of loudspeaker is very important.

There is a very good reason for that: XLR connectors are not designed for use as speaker connectors and cannot handle the current required for high power applications. Many years ago they were used as speaker connectors by some companies but not today.

I have a concern about the speakon connector..and this is it. As you know, the speakon connector has 4 (or more) pins (+1..-1.... +2.-2). If I start from +1-1.. and +2-2.. with 2 connections to 2 passive speakers of 8 ohms, these are converted to 4 ohms.. or remain at the impedance of 8 ohms
@GLBProductions2 ай бұрын
Hello Florin, the pins are independent, so if you connect one speaker on +1/-1 and a second one on +2/-2 they do not interact with one another. Just bear in mind that the standard wiring for fullrange speakers is +1/-1 so any deviation from this can introduce wiring errors into your system.

Where can I get the little screws that clamp the wire down inside the connector. I ordered nL4 screw and I recieved a bag of mounting screws. Anyone know?
@GLBProductions2 жыл бұрын
I've never seen the screws sold separately - you may need to recycle an old set. Or just replace the entire connector - I consider them wear items, just like the cable itself.

Excellent explanation! Clean demonstration! BRAVO! But why have 4 pole or 8 pole speakON?
@GLBProductions6 жыл бұрын
They are used for sending multiple channels of audio down a single multi-core loudspeaker cable. For example a line array box may have low, mid and high drivers which need six conductors altogether so you would use an NL8 connector.

@ 15:06 you mentioned that it has a racheting system that prevents the end-cap from backing off. But, if you want to disassemble it, how do you unscrew it and take off the end cap?

You need to use an adjustable spanner to back it off - it will damage the teeth on the ratchet system but the connector can still be re-used.

Sorry if this has been asked before but, what are +2 and -2 terminals used for? What I mean is: how are, and what would they be connected to inside the amplifier? I am kind of a n00b to Speakon connectors.
@GLBProductions6 жыл бұрын
They're typically used for biamplified speakers where +1/-1 is used for the lows and +2/-2 for the highs. Exactly how they are connected depends on the amp that you are using - in some cases you are making connections from two separate amps using a custom patch panel.

It depends on many things to be honest with you, but a simple installation with four fullrange speakers daisy-chained together will generally only use two pole connections. Consult a qualified installation specialist if you are not sure!

I have a PYLE pct-40 cable tester and all the XLR cables that are not made by Cable Matters never illuminate the red ground LED indicator which I believe is correct but all the Cable Matters cables do illuminate the red ground LED. @moonshinebandit61587 жыл бұрын
one question. you mentioned rubber jacketing, would the pvc version be ok if the wire is stapled to a wall never touching the floor? And also, will the strain relief hold just as tight on the pvc jacket? The reason I ask is my speakers will be hung on my wall and I dont want black wire snakeing up to them because of cosmetic look in room.
@GLBProductions7 жыл бұрын
For home installation that should be fine. Whether the strain relief works or not depends on the cable diameter more than the material of the jacket.
@scorpionz3a8 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruno, this is a very detailed illustration. Thanks for the video. I am a system integrator, so such videos are always helpful. Could you please explain me the purpose of 2+ and 2- though? Is that pair meant to carry second channel? If that's what it is, then 2 pole Speakon connector would be capable of carrying single audio channel whereas 4 pole, two channels. Please enlighten. Thanks.
@GLBProductions8 жыл бұрын
That's exactly right - the four pole speakon can carry either one or two channels of audio, and gives you the option of using 4-conductor speaker cable to carry two channels of audio in a single cable run. This works well with amplifiers that give you the option of outputting both channels into one speakon connector. Exactly how the two channels are used is up to the individual operator or system designer.
@scorpionz3a8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bruno for clarifying. Could you help me with applications where you'd use the 4 pole Speakon exploiting both the channels? As in, exemplify with a scenario wherein 4 pole Speakon would be ideal to pick?
@GLBProductions8 жыл бұрын
The most common situation would be a passive biamplified speaker where the woofer was connected to pins +1/-1 and the compression driver to pins +2/-2.

Well done but how do you get it apart if needed? JimE
@GLBProductions8 жыл бұрын
You have to use a fair amount of force to unscrew the endcap, which usually partially destroys the ratchet mechanism. However in my experience these connectors almost never fail if assembled correctly and the terminal screws are properly tightened down. Almost all of the speakon failures I have seen have involved cheap copies ;)
@therealsavagehenry51077 жыл бұрын
If I have 2 speakers, each at 8 ohms and each with two conductors, could I wire them up to a 4 conductor Speakon jack to get a parallel connection at 4 ohms? Basically just connecting the positive and negative leads of each speaker to +1/-1 and +2/-2 lugs on the jack, respectively? Thanks
@GLBProductions7 жыл бұрын
No that won't work because there is no connection between the two pairs of conductors - your signal from the first speaker would not reach the second one. The correct way to do this is to daisy chain the speakers, so amp -> first speaker and then output of first speaker -> input of second speaker. All cables are wired the same way, resultant load on the amp is 4 ohms.
@mikeybugguns5 жыл бұрын
Can these connectors be taken apart in the event a wire comes loose? thanks for the info. After working in/ hobby of RF, for the past 30 years, I am now getting into the AF end of things. again thank you. 73
@GLBProductions5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can take them apart - use a wrench on the flats at the back of the boot to back it off. It will damage the ratchet mechanism somewhat but typically you can still re-use the connector.
@mikeybugguns5 жыл бұрын
@@GLBProductions thanks for the info.at this point I am still not wanting to use them. I feel that if one of these connectors in pluged into a speaker or an amp. Each driver (woofer and tweeter) needs two wires - a send and return path for the signal. Typically these are taken from the output of a passive crossover inside the speaker and the user does not need to wire those connections.

Is it recommended to use 100' xlr cable for speakers?
@GLBProductions8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not! For connecting speakers you ONLY use speaker cable, ie unshielded twisted pair, generally with a minimum thickness of 16 gauge for live sound use. Mic cable doesn't have the current carrying capacity for connecting loudspeakers and can actually melt and start a fire.
@KertinaProduction8 жыл бұрын
