It seems ill-timed but it is accurate. The song is originally from the Broadway musical "A Chorus Line", which tells the story of a group of 10 dancers auditionning for a Broadway show, when only 2 of them will be chosen. They all do their best to impress the director and in the end, they all sing the song "What I Did for Love", to express their mutual feeling that they did their best and if not chosen, they must not have regrets but move on. That Glee episode is entitled "Auditions", so the song fits perfectly. Rachel sings it not because of the love she has for herself, but for her love of performing. She wants to be the #1 glee club star and is ready to do whatever it takes ("We did what we had to do") though she will have to face the consequences of her actions ("Kiss today goodbye and point me toward tomorrow").

I really hate Rachel in this episode, and when she's confronted by Tina, Mike, and Mr. Shue, I couldn't stand seeing her reason for sending Sunshine to a crack house. She's so selfish, egocentric, and kinda mean person. Look, her reason is to always be the main singer, to be a star, and that's why she's trying to justify her actions towards others but Mercedes ends up being a star without shutting other people down.
