This is something that bothered me so much about this show. They had characters do really horrible things to other characters, and the next episode, everything was either forgotten about, or everyone was upset at the actual victim, and the person doing the scheming was now the victim because they were "misunderstood". It happened between Kurt and Finn, it happened between Kitty and Marley, it happened between Unique and Ryder, and it happened between Sebastian and Kurt/Blaine. All were really, REALLY bad examples of humanity, and all were swept under the rug without any kind of repercussion. At least with Quinn, Puck, and Karofsky, there was a lasting effect. You saw the ripple. It made a difference on the story through the seasons, and changed the dynamics of those characters.

theres a shit ton of scenes where they tackle some heavy topics and then sweep it under the rug. the characters who did wrong don't face the consequences and it progresses on to the next scene. its a cycle and i feel like theyre mostly doing it to bait people.

I feel like the writers were so in love with the concept of glee being all about teaching empathy and understanding that it ended up giving every character who did something wrong a million excuses just so that the character wouldn’t have to face real repercussions. It’s okay to be angry. It’s okay to not forgive someone when they hurt you. It’s okay to understand why they did it (and it’s smart to try to understand because you can learn something about life) without accepting the way they did it.

This storyline was one of the most destructive and messed up ones in all of Glee. From what we are led to see, Ryder told personal stories and sent personal pictures to this catfish. This was the one person in all of the series to actually understand and listen to Ryder and it was all a lie. Not only that, but then they completely made Unique's motivations and reasoning for catfishing Ryder conflict with what we have seen. "It all started of innocent." For who? I remember someone asking Ryder for "another shirtless pic." Unique pulls out this whole "I only did it because I am trans and he would only like me this way" as though this wasn't completely malicious and as though Ryder didn't eventually form a friendship with her even before he knew that she was catfishing him. Then Ryder and Unique make up and have possibly assumed a romantic relationship, nobody knows because Glee stopped focusing on them in season 5 in favor of the old ND kids, and we just have to forget that this all happened.

Marley and Unique has one of the most underrated friendships on this show! They were always there for and by each other. I think it’s fair to feel bad for both of them. Ryder trusted someone and that went back on him. Unique’s vulnerable side has always been outshined by her confidence in other areas so she did this not knowing a proper outlet. I get why she did it but she shouldn’t have. All in all, this storyline could’ve been wrapped up 10x better than just leaving it.

We never got any closure after this, did we? I feel like the storyline was left open to explore in season 5 but it was never touched on. In this same episode, before they’re about to perform for Regionals, Ryder says he’s plans on leaving glee club after, but first episode next season, he’s right back in glee club and it’s like the catfish storyline never happened. Was there another confrontation? Are Ryder and Unique friends now? What made Ryder change his mind and stay? Season 5 was wild! It could’ve been so much better if they would’ve explored this storyline, even if just for a couple episodes. Take away the two episodes of cheating/false alarm pregnancy and replace them with Unique/Ryder drama instead lol

i love that they had this storyline in there - someone getting catfished, i mean - because it happens to the people who are least expecting it. it happened to me, and i never would have imagined i would go through something like that. i do wish, though, that they had made it more of a cautionary tale than just more drama in the choir room. a lot of catfishes are actually really dangerous. i sort of wish they had gone with that route - like someone meeting up with this catfish and almost getting hurt or something - because i think it would have done more to teach the people who watched this show than someone Ryder knew being the catfish.

It gets a lot worse when you rewatch the previous episodes with the knowledge that Unique was the catfish the whole time. So Unique, hiding behind the picture of a pretty blonde, got Ryder to send her shirtless/sexy pictures of himself. That’s creepy AF. Then she feuds with him WHILE ALSO BEING THE PERSON HE CONFIDES IN ABOUT THE FEUD ON-LINE. “So how did your feud duet with that guy go?” Yes, she, under the disguise of “Katty” refers to herself as “that guy” and is patient and understanding with him on-line while being a total bitch to him when they’re face-to-face. That’s like borderline multiple personality disorder.

Why are 2 teenagers on an online dating website. Ryder literally sent a lewd image of himself to a stranger and exposed a very important story about him that he hasnt told anyone about other than his parents I think. What should've happened was a few things that would've made this a bit deeper without giving Unique the "trans people are predatory and will catfish straight men" stereotype. 1) Ryder should've grown past this catfish situation (person catfishing is either girl or someone who is scamming him) and it catches up to him in a later episode and gives a lesson about sending information about yourself to strangers. 2) Unique WAS the catfish BUT she doesn't go as far as asking for topless pics and deep issues like Ryder being sexually abused at a young age (like say...2 weeks into talking about possible meetups/intimacy). They meet up, Unique reveals herself, Ryder initially has the same reaction as the video but comes back a few months later (for a situation like their Junior Prom) and understands Unique's situation on trans dating and he helps her out by going with her or helping her find a date (maybe introducing her to a cousin/family member whose her age) 3) Ryder and Kitty end up connecting overtime due to their experiences and understanding each other and he grows past the catfish girl (which will later be revealed to be Unique who hasn't done very questionable things) and Ryder has the same reaction as the video here. Anyways I hope those werent too happy ending-y. I just wish it didn't go this way cause they both deserved better.

Blake didn’t speak about the abuse until October 2020, almost a year later. Now, if the abuse went both ways, don’t you think Blake would’ve spoken up about it when Melissa did. They didn’t follow up with this story arc they left it hanging. It appears as if Ryder got over Unique’s childish game but come on, they’re teenagers. Kids make mistakes and although I don’t condone Unique’s behaviour, I do understand why they felt the need to do this.

Yes, what Unique did was wrong: point, blank, period. But as a trans POC color, in high school at that, dating is almost nonexistent. I believe this is something that a teenager in high school might do. At that age, you are irresponsible and naive. I am not trans but as a gay person, I can relate to being in high school and falling for the straight, attractive friend. When you're a teenager you just want to be normal and have all the typical high school experiences as everyone else. You wish so desperately to be that thing that your crush would be attracted to. You think, if I was just straight or cis gender or whatever they're into that it would all be perfect. Queer people don't get that, especially back when this first aired. Ryder has every right to be upset, but how different would the reaction would've been if it turned out to be Kitty, for example? In a previous scene, Jake spins it into a positive that it could be Kitty. I disliked this storyline because of the disservice it does to Unique and I would've loved her to find someone to be in a relationship with at some point. That would've been such a heart-warming thing for trans youth to look up to. Alas, my main point is that Unique had no malicious or ill intention in this and this is believably something a high school student could do. Ryder was upset, justifiably so. I really wish we had gotten some sort of closure for this.

Miguel Angel First of all, that scenario would never work. In what universe would a straight person wanna trick a trans person anyways? Another thing, it's not about being straight or gay when it comes to a person being transgender. Unique identifies AS a woman and Ryder is a man. It would've been a straight relationship. He wouldn't have switched his sexuality. Anyway, I agree with the first commenter. Glee messed this up. They wanted to make a silly little love tri between Jake, Ryder and Marley, only for her to end up dating nobody, which makes no sense, at least not to me. I feel like they could've explored and try to make a little reconciliation, which could've turned into a love story between Ryder and Unique, to show that a cis man and a trans woman, or vice versa, was okay. That's my opinion. You're welcome to state yours as well.

this was so out of place. they really didn't set up anything properly for this storyline to work and make sense in regards to the characters. Like when did unique start liking ryder? this was really messed up and then poof it was gone. I feel like at some point the story lines became "don't do this thing cause its bad" and then everything resets for the next moral lesson. Theres a way to do that, this was not it

Honestly I would’ve preferred it be Kitty doing the catfishing. Her and Ryder had a lot more groundwork laid for a deeper connection plus you could write it as kitty wanting to connect with someone without her previous antics and bad behavior plaguing her not to mention kitty as Katie encouraging Ryder would be a sign of kitty also growing as a person and accepting unique. Having it be unique was incredibly obvious and there’s zero followup to this.

He has every right to be mad. I'd be pretty damn pissed off if the girl I trusted and told personal pictures to ended up catfishing me. Unique was in the wrong here and she doesn't have any excuses for it. Regardless of whether she thought that he wouldn't love her because she's trans catfishing someone just isn't right. Plus he took it really well, in S5 he immediately leaped to her defense and helped her even though she tricked him.
