Part 1: • Glen "Big Baby" Davis:...
--------
In this clip, Glen “Big Baby” Davis spoke about being present at Kevin Garnett’s jersey retirement and what it meant to him to be part of KG’s journey. He also weighed in on athletes being taken advantage of by accountants, like his big homie Kevin Garnett. Big Baby explained how someone in KG’s position can be taken advantage of and why pro athletes are woefully underprepared to handle the type of money they’re coming into and what they want to do in the business world.

Pro athletes - make sure you sign every check, no power of attorney agreements and have two accountants - (who should not be working together) to help YOU balance the books EVERY month. Hire a CPA who used to work for the IRS and is highly knowledgeable in whatever industries (ie. real estate) you invest in for your taxes. Buy apartment complexes and laundromats all around the country. Don’t invest in restaurants or car washes. Your on season and off season job is keeping your hard earned money, and making it work for you, so you can retire at a reasonably similar lifestyle after retirement for the rest of your life.

I don’t see why athletes DON’T think about what they’re gonna do next. All it takes is ONE INJURY for it to be over with. This is why the players will always be going through the same inevitable shit. On the contrary, making poor decisions with money is a personal learning lesson. Can’t nobody take that from you. Being young, healthy and ignorant with money you’re bound to make mistakes. I’m in my 30s now, I understand the power of credit, INVESTING and having MULTIPLE STREAMS OF INCOME. As an accountant, it is so easy to monitor your finances let alone letting another goofy steal from you. Being an "athlete" is not an excuse. Set ACH approvals where only payments can clear your account with your approval only. Trust me the bank will reject any payment other than you. If payment on credit, issue a virtual card where the cc # is different every month and limit is only what the payment is authorized for. If ur making KG money, pay $100/month for invoice system where payments on ur checking/savings are made only after you review and approve payment in the system. Own businesses and real estate? Hire a CPA auditing firm to validate no one is stealing and your financials are clean. Consult with a CPA if early in business and they will direct on how you stay safe financially before you start growing. DO NOT HANDLE CASH. DO NOT GIVE POWER OF ATTORNEY. In my humble opinion only YOU should be in control of ur money.

Did you grow up with knowledge of these things? I also work in corporate Finance/Accounting but we can't act like these things are common sense items because they are not! Especially for many who come from a background of "lack". You're talking about in many cases a 19 or 20 year old that probably didn't even know how to reconcile a checkbook at the time that they acquired 50 million so these would be foreign concepts. It's excellent advice that you're providing but sometimes you have to "walk in their shoes" to fully understand the root of the problem. Not saying there is no accountability because many of these guys have seen and heard the horror stories of others that came before them, but as immature 20 year olds I'm sure they think they got this and it will never happen to them all while the vultures are circling smh

@@aleekap1890you have good points. i learned this at 18 on youtube trying to get my first accounting job. no degree even still. my parents never taught me. the point is, if you are in position of alot of money, whether 18 or 80 years old, the responsibility is on YOU. Just like growing up when we had to be careful of going certain places at certain times, the same needs to be applied to ur money. Being an "athlete" is not reasonable excuse especially when they say "I am more than an athlete" which is true.

The NBA rookie transition program was introduced in 1986. They preach on financial literacy and who to trust and not to trust with your money. There have been hundreds of players who have gone broke or been defrauded and this is all public knowledge. Rookies have everything they need to prevent making the same mistakes, but at the end of the day if they choose to trust the wrong people, make the wrong business decisions etc etc there isn’t anything anyone can do about it. So it end up being the player learning the hard way. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink.

The NFL and NBA could make it mandatory that all new players get some financial training and they should even offer financial services, have vetted contracts with places, etc. It would also be good if high schools and colleges taught ALL students good financial practices, how to be productive adults and manage money, how to invest, why to invest, how to save, how to prepare for retirement, the importance of home ownership, etc. Our schools are failing at teaching basic skills and how to manage a budget is a basic skill.

Now if I made NBA money, 5yr/246 million...do I need to invest & hire an accountant who's going to lie & steal about a 3rd of my money? It never made sense to me. Should I be happy with my 246million & just roll with that? Why should I invest, I wasn't never going to make that type of money nowhere else. Kevin Garnett made $343 million in career earnings, by him hiring a accountant & doin wack investments, his accountant stole $77million, would've did better by not hiring an damn accountant

Same with Jay Leno,it's said he doesn't touch his Tonight Show money,he lives off of money from his other gigs. If you're only making money off your contract, live within your means,a modest home,no entourage, not buying jewelry and huge mansions(you have to pay property tax, utilities, maintenance) ,and not having kids with multiple women (child support),and if you go out, skip the bottles(go order a drink or two)

Nobody is telling you to take a class on finance but everybody got they hand out. They roll with these big entourage because the hood says if you only are thinking about yourself and your future and not Ballin out wit ya peeps then you a sellout and forgot about where you come from. To be fair even if you told them they might not listen anyway. It's all about how hard you can stunt until you wake up. Sometimes it's too late by then.
