The story that Glen often told is that he wrote the song with Jerry Capehart, but Jerry didn't give him credit (or music royalties) for it. In one interview Glen went into more detail and told that he wrote the melodically ascending part which features twice in the song. It's impossible to say for sure, but my bet is that Glen was telling the truth. - M.H.

Very Interesting. I never knew that Glen had a hand in writing this song. This story sounds like Lennon/McCartney. The Credit went to Lennon/McCartney for all the songs they wrote, even if the credit was solo to one or the other. Paul explained this that their agreement was that during their collaboration, they would share credit on all compositions, such as Yesterday written by Paul, the credit is Lennon/McCartney. This is a digression from this particular story, but seemed similar, except in this case it sounds like this was not an agreement over the credit.

Glen Campbell ended up having such phenomenal success, he wouldn't have to lie about being cowriter on a song written six years before he hit it big. No reason to.

Who has ever heard of Jerry Capeheart, if he wrote this song. He would have did other songs. I believe Glen over that untalented thug, Glen just let it go, went on to write many more songs, performed all over the world!! The bigger talent wins!!

I cut my teeth singing Glen's songs back in the 60's, took guitar lessons in '69 when I was 13. Gentle On My Mind was the first song I learned to play, then Galveston, and what a fantastic time it was learning to play the hits as he recorded and released them. Forever memories of a magical time. And I'm still singin' and playin' them fifty years later. And to do them justice, I play them on an Ovation. The songs are timeless, just like Glen.

I've made several comments on this...but must just add, this was always a Favourite song of mine. I have the record by The Vogues, familiar with The Bachelors and, The Lettermen versions... However, Glen's performance on this is Absolutely Brilliant...it IS the BEST (IMHO), And, upon learning,.. hearing from his own mouth he co-wrote this, and I appreciate the gentleman that have backed that up. His portrayal of this song is so personal..It's Beautifully delivered with such emotion. Magnificent !!! Happy Heavenly 84th Birthday Glen. Love you❤

I had no idea Glen had recorded/co-written this song in 1961 until I read it in his obit today. Remember the Vogues' hit version later in the 60's, but this came as a bit of a surprise. Glen had a marvelous and clear tenor right up to the end. His "Ghost On The Canvas" album from 2011 is superb and a fitting tribute to his career and talent.

One of my favorite Glen Campbell songs! Jimmy Webb has said that this was the song written and recorded by Glen Campbell in 1961 that inspired Jimmy Webb (at age 14) to pray to God to "one day allow me to write a song half as good as ‘Turn Around Look At Me’. And Lord if it’s not too much trouble could you get someone like Glen Campbell to record it?” :) (From: cashboxcanada dot ca, 2/9/2015)

On this day in 1961 {December 15th} Glen Campbell performed "Turn Around, Look At Me"* on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... At the time the song was at #76 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, it first entered the chart on October 30th for a one week stay at #97, re-entered the chart on November 20 for another week at #98, and then for a third time re-entered the chart on December 4th at #93... And on December 25th, 1961 it peaked at #62 {for 1 week} and spent a total of ten weeks on the Top 100... It reached #15 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks charts... Between 1961 and 2014 he had thirty-seven records on the Top 100 chart, five made the Top 10 with two reaching #1, "Rhinestone Cowboy" for 2 weeks in 1975 and "Southern Nights" for 1 week in 1977... Five of his thirty-seven charted records on the Top 100 were duets, three with Bobbie Gentry, and one each with Anne Murray and Rita Coolidge... Glen Travis Campbell passed away at the age of 81 earlier this year on August 8th {2017}... May he R.I.P. * Seven years later on August 11th, 1968 the Vogues' covered version of the song peaked at #7 {for 2 weeks} on the Top 100 chart and it would reached #3 on the Adult Contemporary Tracks chart...

He's so terribly thin at this point, I'm guessing this was when he was drugging and boozing. It's amazing that he never lost his singing voice or his guitar skills as a result of that hard living. But the man was so incredibly gifted, you'd never even know he abused his body. Here's your proof. I could listen to this 5 times a day. And, in spite of being so thin, he's still gorgeous. I'm so thankful he turned back to the Lord.
