Today we're riding in the Glens and Mountains of Scotland in this onboard video clip we're riding in Glen Lyon, where we encounter a herd pf Highland Cattle.
A Glen is the Scottish term for a valley. Many have a U-shape and were gouged into existence by huge glaciers that ground down the mountains. The glaciers finally departed at the end of the last ice age 11,500 years ago.
Highland Cattle feature in this video their origins date back to the 6th Century making them a very old breed known to have grazed the rugged Scottish landscape for thousands of years.
It is still a matter of debate as to whether they were an origin of Scotland or imported from Scandinavia perhaps with the Vikings when they invaded Great Britain.
Originally they were black. These days, most of the Highland cows that are seen roaming the natural landscapes in Scotland are ginger or brown.
