Auckland has two coasts that are radically different. The west coast is over the Waitakere ranges (why tak ah reh) and they're wild ocean beaches. Wide black sands and actually fairly dangerous surf beaches with shifting currents and rips, if you don't listen to the lifeguards. They're also the surfing beaches, Piha, Kari Kari, and Muriwai to name a few. On the other coast you have the beaches that face into the Hauraki Gulf, which are tamer....more domesticated, like Takapuna and the other north shore bays, Browns bay, castor bay, Mairangi bay, long bay etc. completely different feel and composition with white sand and less wild water. Sadly they also have pollution issues now and then, being in built up areas.

Lots of roadworks because they are still repairing the damage from cyclone Gabrielle which also destroyed a lot of houses as you saw at KareKare beach. Aucklands west coast got hammered during the cyclone and unfortunately a number of lives were lost. Still a beautiful place though.

If you want a good afternoon go to the best pub in Auckland, the Northcote Tavern, and then walk down under the harbour bridge, there is a little park, fantastic close view of the harbour back to the city

My local coffee shop in Henderson! The park where you were in Henderson was also completely flooded with many houses having to be evacuated. Glad you enjoyed the wild West Coast of Auckland. A lot of tracks were closed because of slips from the bad weather we had in Jan/Feb23. Piha had been closed to all but residents until just b4 Christmas (I believe). Those 'dead' trees are ponga trees, often because of possums eating all the foliage... if not because of another slip. The Waitakere Ranges is often a weather break for Auckland because they stretch far along the coast - sunny on one side, cloudy on the other. Enjoyed watching your travels. Thanks for taking this old lady on for the ride. Hopefully see you back again one day 😊

Ohhh you missed out on one of the best pie shops in Glen Eden…aaand did you miss the cave at Piha! Facing the Lions Rock, the cave is on the right, right at the end of the beach. Piha beach is always packed during summer! It is also a dangerous beach due to many rips which is why people are always advised to swim between the flags.

So glad you both got out to piha it's definitely 1 if new zealands best beaches I think more so when it's wet and windy as it's just so beautiful when all the water falls are working My teenage years i mostly spent every weekend out there walking surfing and just chilling

At Piha where you saw the house looks like spaceship that is a new building as it use to be Surflife Club. From Lions Rock to the South there should be a walk to take you up and over the hill and back down to another beach where you can see blow hole and island close to beach where you can see a hole / cave where the Tasman Sea passes through the island

I remember visiting Piha on a summer's day and regretting setting off for the water's edge without footwear. The sun heats the black sand to scorching temperatures.

You sadly got a bit of a bad day. But it changes daily there. Hopefully you got to see some of the other west coast beaches like Muriwai and Bethel's. You would have loved the gap at Piha too

Way back in th 1980s used to go to Piha and Karekare all the time in summer. I always remember some graffiti on a road barrier on the way - "Live Hard-Surf Hard and have great bodies". Thats how we lived back then !

Tailing gating - the locals are so used to the road out there that when tourists drive it they always go so slow and the locals just want to get home and are stuck behind drivers with no confidence just pull over and let them pass

Tailgating? Don't talk to me about tailgating. As a student on a road trip through the country in summer of 1985/86, my mate, who wouldn't let anyone touch his car, said to me "here you go, you can drive for a bit." And onto Auckland's southern motorway we went. Everyone was driving 120km/h and only 2 metres apart. Madness. So, yes: it's an Auckland thing. Although less so these days in my experience.
