In this episode, we explore the famous Newcastle, a place many recommend! It is a magical place full of beautiful coastlines and hidden gems. We explore and give our first impression while giving you a raw, authentic insight. Newcastle is a harbour city in the Australian state of New South Wales. Its plentiful beaches are linked by the Bathers Way, a coastal walk stretching between Nobbys Beach and Merewether Beach.

I was born and raised in Sydney but I was sent to Newcastle for my work for 3 years and loved it so when I retired I moved back up that way. I ended up living in Lake Macquarie which is right next to Newie and it's a beautiful area with lots of beaches and of course the lake itself.

I lived in Newcastle until I was 13 and it is home to my NRL the Newcastle Knights. I will always have a sweet spot for me. The city centre was never the same after the earthquake (1989) with much of the main shopping places moved to surrounding areas (Wallsend and Kotara). I hope you continue heading north were i live on the Mid North Coast as I believe have the best beaches in the world (i might be slightly bias).

I grew up in Newcastle in the fifties and the Bogey Hole has always had that chain fence around it on the ocean side. I think the story you were told about people being washed out to sea was just that, a story. No-one was ever washed out when I lived there even when the sea was wild but then again people used to have a lot more nous to avoid catastrophic outcomes, unlike the cosseted generations.

You have to do the mid north coast of NSW. Start at Port Macquarie, south west rocks, go to the trial bay goal, Nambucca heads V Wall and Shelly Beach, then head inland and go to the promised lands it’s a must see, dorrigo falls and check out Bellingen, then if you have the time, Yamba, Byron Bay, Ballina. You haven’t seen the real beauty of this country yet, a shame you’re going to mis the whale migration, they come in so close at Nambucca you can almost touch them, but it’s still worth the extra 3/12 hour trip from Newcastle. The sub tropics are some of the most of most breath taking scenery in the world and we are very well traveled. Shelley beach in Nambucca heads is ranked in the top 10 in Australia. Get in on low tide. If you catch it in a good day it’s up there with Isla or Rio!

Schnitzel is very common in Australia...it is a common pub meal item sometimes called a chicken parmigiana. In South Australian pubs it just called Schnitzel and usually a choice of beef, chicken and sometimes veal. Then you can choose the gravy, sauce or topping you prefer from parmigiana or Hawaiian (pineapple, ham, cheese and tomato sauce) to mushroom or pepper gravy to dianne, creamy garlic or creamy garlic and prawns. Basically nearly every pub will have this available (at least in Adelaide) and there are plenty excellent ones and some bad ones....but the bad ones don't stay bad because cooks get fired or management changes and sometimes quality improves otherwise customers won't return.

A few miles north of Newcastle is RAAF base Williamtown for Stealth Fighters F-35A, Hawks 127, and AWACs E-7 they announce war game on the RAAF net site so one can view take off and landings for the night and day exercises. One can see them take off over your head at only a 80 feet near the road or watch it from the Fightertown museum cafe roof on tables and chairs....... an excellent view and military aviation museum. Not sure if tours of the base is allowed now? could be. Most amazing site when the Super hornets and Growlers take on the F-35A lightning II one after another taking off at sunrise or sunset for about an hour non stop. And they throw on a little display as they arrive home from combat training over the ocean. Visiting USAF/Marines F-16C, F-15C, F/A-18A mix in it too every now and then................bring your ear plugs.

I hope you continue up the coast a bit further to Forster/Tuncurry. I lived in Umina Beach on the Central Coast for many years, and it was paradise but it was eventually discovered by Sidneyites fleeing the rat race and became a bit overpopulated for us. Forster is a much more relaxed lifestyle and the true paradise. Forster is 2 hours north of Newcastle.

Did you miss the Memorial Walk in Newcastle?

I went there recently and the war memorial walk was great . Never went to Nobby’s beach or the boogey hole .You will love the beaches at Port Stephens such as Nelson’s Bay . They are scenic . Drive a bit further up there is Seal Rocks and Sugar Loaf Bay has calm waters but go to Lighthouse beach it is amazing . Before Seal Rocks there is Hawksnest . There is Bennett beach and Jimmy’s Winda Woppa beach . You can climb the Yacabba and you will be rewarded with excellent views . You can also see Broughton island too ! There is also Cape Hawk lookout and I saw a dingo there . It will be great for you to see Anna Bay and Stocktons beach . The sand dunes look like the Sahara desert.

If you want to see the whitest sand & a beach that is constantly in the top 20 beaches in the world, drive down to Jervis Bay & go to Hyams Beach & definitely go to Whitehaven Beach in Queensland, always voted no.1 or no. 2 best beach in the world...Yes, definitely Nelson's Bay & Port Stephens, Coffs Harbour
