I'm glad you guys knew about not putting your head under the water. I was worried for a bit when you guys were at Kerosine Creek because it's routinely taught to us in NZ not to put your head under warm water at a non-comericial site due to a small but potentially deadly risk of bacterial or amoeboid infections. Making a note is also prudent, as few years back someone was hospitalisd and forgot that they'd been to such a place, so the issue wasn't diagnosed in time.

we sort of knew at this time but yeah I basically got water on my head but no issues anyways! haha. we kinda got paranoid afterwards actually!

Having visited Rotorua, it doesn’t smell as bad as Glen is making it out to be. Perhaps one just gets used to it. An awesome town to visit though, really interesting.

It varies from day to day and seems worse on cool misty days. I have never found the smell unpleasant

The Indigenous Māori people of the Te Arawa tribe have been thriving in all the geothermal areas in & around Rotorua for centuries too, they call the whole area including the redwoods "Whakarewarewa" which simply means the gathering place of many geysers and natives ✨

Another nice place near Auckland and Rotorua that is free is the Hamilton Gardens, I believe they will be introducing a fee for visitors in the next year or so but as of right now i believe it is free and they have many fantastic gardens from around the world.

The sulphur smell really isn't that bad! I compare it to a "background noise" - the sound of waves on a beach. Just like that fades into the background, so it is with the sulphur smell - you get used to it in no time.

@@GlenAndMado good thinking, there are big contrasts in the south island, lots of farmlands on the east coast, thick forests on the west coast, central Otago is hot and dry but very scenic. Fiordland is incredible and lots of places to stay in DOC campsites

NOTE: Kuirau Park isn't overly safe even throughout the day but do not go at night. Especially females but ANY travelers visiting it alone. Just be wary as it's a hotspot for crime past 9pm unfortunately.
