Another amazing hidden gem is the Blue Mountains Botanical Gardens. My uncle, who traveled extensively around the world, said they were among the best he’d ever visited. The gardens and view are absolutely stunning! The main building, offers full window views from every direction, allowing you to feel completely immersed in the beautiful surroundings. As you step out onto the multi leveled gardens, the beauty is breathtaking-a manicured garden that draws your eye straight to the horizon, where the Blue Mountains stretch endlessly into the distance. The lookouts are spectacular, offering a panoramic view that makes you feel like you’re standing on the edge of the world.

I love the Blue Mountains , especially the remote areas . One time we went to Leura and took the turn off to Hay road and it is a dirt track road . First you are driving through the bush then suddenly you are driving a long the cliff line with spectacular view if the valley then you reach Butter Box Point loop track . It is incredible with the sand stone cliffs , forest , winding creek and caves . It is so quiet with a handful of people . We did the hike but there is no fencing . It is raw beauty . Lockley Pylon the same . There is so much to see.You both are so sweet !

Such a good video, thank you. It really is stunning in the Blue Mountains. My mum grew up at Narrabeen, one of the beaches on the North Shore of Sydney. The family used to travel up to Blackheath or Katoomba every year for a holiday. A nice change from beachside living and an escape from the heat. With so many excellent trails to walk, and the views are outstanding. I'm glad you got to experience that part of Australia, even if only briefly.

Fun fact for Govetts Leap Lookout in the Blue Mountains. If you have driven along the Great Western Highway through Blackheath, there is a fair chance that you would have spotted the statue of a man on a horse, braced for a jump, a look of desperation on his face. It is located on the western side of the highway in Neate Park which stretches along the railway line. It is a popular stopping point for travellers who have crested the mountain ridge and need a break before the steep decline of Victoria Pass. As with all statues, there is a story behind it. The popular legend was that there was a bushranger called Govett who was being hunted by the police. They finally tracked him down and called upon him to surrender. But he spurred his horse on instead, plummeting to his death over the edge of the cliff to where the water falls into the valley below. If you have travelled into the national park at the end of Govetts Leap Road, walked to the viewing platform and risked vertigo from glimpsing over the side, you might be able to imagine how desperate you would have to be to plunge over the edge and tumble down into the valley. A close inspection of the statue shows a mixture of fear and resolution on the rider’s face. Bushrangers form an intriguing part of early colonial history, and a handful remain as examples of wilder times including Ned Kelly, Ben Hall and Captain Moonlite. The Western Road (Great Western Highway) was well-travelled from the time of its construction, and there was bushranging activity in the area, particularly during the time of the gold rushes at Bathurst, Sofala, Hill End and beyond. But it is, alas, a myth. A persistent myth which added to the fabric and history of Blackheath. The waterfall at Govetts Leap which cascades into the Grose Valley had been surveyed in 1831 by William Romaine Govett. A descendant of Govett responded to the later claims of Govetts Leap being named for a bushranger with the same name who managed to elude police by seemingly vanishing at a cliff regarded as impossible for a man or beast to climb. It was suggested that the bushranger and the surveyor had been conflated. It had been named by Major Mitchell, Surveyor-General, in recognition of Govett who was his assistant surveyor. The statue was created by Arthur Murch and was erected by the Blackheath Rhododendron Festival Committee in 1974. It is a nod to the importance of myths in our history.

Lived there (Blue Mts.), 1976 - 1984. The towns and the highway have changed a LOT since then, and not necessarily for the better, but the scenery is as beautiful today as it was when Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson crossed the ranges back in the 1800s.

Welcome to my childhood stomping grounds! More modern amenities now then when I was there. They're cable car down the cliff used to be $2 and it was the original mining cage. There was no nice seats or safety equipment, just hang onto the caged ceiling and try not to get your fingers shaved off by the rock above and it went very fast with only ropes to hold the cart. We also used to climb the 3 sisters to the end to have picnics. It was never as busy as it is now. And there was many snakes birds lizards koalas everywhere! Not anymore

Omg I remember that too. My grandfather lived at Wentworth Falls. As a little girl of 5 yrs old, he would take my sister and I for bush walks near his house to collect the devil heads off local plants. My grandmother would use pipe cleaners to make bodies and stick dresses on them. So many beautiful memories 🤗 I saw my first snow at Wentworth Falls as well. When I woke up, their verandahs and lawn were covered in snow. I was so excited. It didn't snow in Sydney. My memories of the train was exactly as you described. I remember hanging on for dear life to the cage. I think there was no door either. You would be standing up as it went down the cliff face. Screaming was the norm hahaha. I was even naughty and carved my initials on a bench that was there to rest at on one of the Three Sisters when walking down. Let's admit it. It was 60yrs ago, and you could get away with it back then 😂 I haven't been back for years, but I'm happy to see that Mado and Glen showed that the towns still have that country atmosphere. My daughter worked at the Hydro Majestic / Coffee Shop for yrs until she saw a young guy take his shoes off, and she knew what he was going to do when he started to climb over the fence. She ran but unfortunately couldn't save him. He threw himself over.😪 My daughter had to leave her job, this was her third time witnessing suicides. I'm sure they've probably improved around the cliffs due to tourism. That happened back in the '90s. I just want to remember the good times in the '60s with my grandparents 🤗 One day I'll make the trip from the mid nth coast and visit my old stomping ground as a kid. Glen and Mado have triggered my curiosity 😁

@louisekindred0059 so sorry to hear about your pics and everything being lost to the fires and floods.😢😢 devastating. I'm so grateful 🙏 for the pics of my childhood camping adventures at Blackheath back in the 70s. We had the best adventures EVER up there. My Foster brothers Richard and Harry, were Aboriginal kids. They taught us painting on bark etc from paint made from rock and plant colours. I'm an honorary family member (mob). I was a Foster kid as well for 6 yrs. They were some of the last stolen generation, they were from La Perouse, taken from their dear mum. We were from Lethbridge Park, white kids 5 sisters, state wards . So lucky they kept us 5 sisters together. ❤❤
@louisekindred005911 күн бұрын
@louise7552 thanks xx Wow what an amazing story. I too was accepted by a mob for helping an Aboriginal family during a crisis. Funny how paths cross. Shalvey here many yrs ago. Well it sounds like you ended up with beautiful ppl that cared and gave you a good life. Especially keeping the five of you sisters together. Unfortunately some were stolen but some were given away by mothers too so their children had a better life. Either way it sounds like you had it tough but you made the best of the situation with love and guidance. Learning bark painting and getting those ochre colours from rocks is so inspiring when you've never done it before. Not many ppl can say they've camped where you have either. Both blacks and whites can learn so much from each other. Anyhow I am happy that you eventually had a fulfilling life and that you and your sisters were lucky enough to experience good times and happiness together with amazing parents/carer's... and I'm sure you will cherish those memories. Sending hugs your way and look after each other 🫂❤️

Went back to the Blue Mts last year for the 1st time in 30 years. We forgot just how beautiful the entire region is. Plan on going again soon (maybe 2026) in a different time of year.(we went at the very end of autumn) Maybe early spring next time (before the heat sets in) If you guys are slowly making your way up the east coast towards us here in Queensland, don't be in too big a rush to get to Byron (make sure everyone has gone back to school as it's way too busy in peak season) Saying that, since you loved the Blue Mts so much make sure you take a slight detour just before you get to Coffs Harbour (halfway between Sydney and Brisbane) and drive a little inland along the "Waterfall Way" which goes between Coffs and Armidale through the Dorrigo National Park. Absolutely beautiful with so many waterfalls and all very different. Well worth a drive along, overnight stay, then drive back to the coastal highway. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy the rest of your trip. Safe travels.❤

I live just over an hour west of Katoomba, basically on the western edge of the Blue Mountains, or eastern edge of the Central West, depending on who you ask. We have some beautiful country out here, and just on Sydney's doorstep. In fact, up to Katoomba is considered part of the Great Sydney Area, so technically still Sydney :) A lot of the Blue Mountains had a bit of growth spurt int he 1920s and 30s, hence the amount of Art Deco inspired architecture. The "grand canyon" you mentioned at Evans Lookout is the Grose Valley. I mention this because we do have an actual 'grand canyon' near there, just north of Lithgow, called Capertee Canyon, which is 1km wider than the Grand Canyon in the US, though shallower.
@bshorrock6911 күн бұрын
It's actually great that the Blue Mountains display the blue tinge to it because of the Eucalyptus trees emitting their droplets into the air The Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia are blue because of an optical phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. This occurs when light rays interact with tiny particles in the atmosphere, such as water vapor, dust, and eucalyptus oil droplets. The particles scatter short-wavelength light rays, which are mainly blue in colour, giving the mountains their blue hue. The Blue Mountains is very Grand Canyon like, except for the Eucalyptus vegetation...

Yeah, Scenic World is expensive, as they only sell a day pass, rather than single trip tickets like they used to. Empress Falls is one of the smaller named waterfalls. Towards Govetts leap from Evans Lookout you have the Bridal Veil Falls (also called Govetts Leap Falls) - 180 metre drop into the valley.

He said he's from "Wendy," meaning Wentworth Falls, which I don't think our travelers would have picked up on. I grew up in the Blue Mountains. Also, you guys should have checked out Norman Lindsey's Gallery.

Glen, how many coffee styles have you tried in Australia? Venture into the other styles not just long black.
