Glencadam 21 REVIEW: As EPIC as the 10?

I'm looking at an older one today. This is a single malt scotch whisky from the Glencadam distillery in the highlands. I'll be looking at the 21 today. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

Agree that the 10 is using the qualities of young Whisky to it's advantage and is a fresh tropical fruit delight. Have had a bottle of the 15 and a 2oz sample of the 21. They are both good but both are a very different personally than the 10. Delicate subtle taking lots of time to get what is in there is how I would describe the older Glencadams. I know some people love this kind of thing with no obvious hooks (Ralfy) but I like something with a bit more going on. Cheers

You're right, it depends on people's preferences (as always). That's why I'm not outright dismissive of this whisky. I know several people with much more experience than me who enjoy this stuff thoroughly. It's just not to my taste, unfortunately.

Loved the review, thanks for your honest take. It was love at first taste for me with the Glencadam 10. I haven’t tried anything else yet, but the sense I have is that both this and the 18 year release are quieter malts. It’s nice to have my expectations adjusted a bit in this way.

Clear insightful and sincere review! I happened upon a Glencadam 12 Portwood Finish (“limited edition”) collecting dust in a shop and have found it delightful- gives a hint of raspberry that meshes well with the distillate. Glencadam perhaps ought to do more barrel experimentation to eke some more excitement from their expressions. Thumbs up!

Haven't tried the 12 Port wood. Sounds like a winner! Imo Glencadam is good any which way. The only expression that disappointed was the Reserva Andalucia. Thanks again for watching Declan!

Interesting. I have both the Arran 10 and the Glencadam 10. I will often buy 12 to 15 year olds, occasionally an 18. But I tend to steer clear of older bottlings. I'm aware that you don't often get the extra value - in fact, distilleries price the product on what they think they can ask for it rather than on actual production/warehousing costs. Your review of this one doesn't surprise me at all. Well done for another honest review. 👍👍👍

Thats often the case, yes. Luckily this is one of the more affordable 21 year olds. And as you can see, it is one that has its fans. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it, but if you're considering it, I would suggest sampling it before you buy. Cheers Victor!

G…Very good review , as usual 👍 Not tried the 21 but completely buy into your descriptions of the 10 ..zesty / vibrant and to lose those attributes would , for me ,take away what Glencaddem is all about , so will keep my cash in pocket and give the 21 a miss , thanks for the great content, the best channel out there 👍🥃🥃

I think Glencadam don't have quallity barrels in hand to use in long period maturation. That's why younger vertions are somehow "better" than the older ones. The spirit is good, but is a light one, easy to be overwelmed by the oak. Cheers!!!

I don't know what casks are at their disposal, but I do think the casks could have been better managed for this particular expression. Personal opinion, of course.

Have a bottle of the 13 at home, and it's quite woody already at that age. Nice and fruity, but almost with bourbon levels of oakiness. I suspect that one was matured mainly in first-fill ex-bourbon casks. So I can definitely see the 21 being too woody. Older bottlings should be more heavy on the refill casks, I think.

Great point! I prefer a more spirit-driven Glencadam anyway. The 10 and 15 are much better than this imo.

Haven't tried this one, but i do try the 15yo, not a big fan though. As you mention "gain and loss" when it comes to higher age, what it gains seems not worth what it loss in the 15yo imo😂. In the case of Arran, it's a success for me; the wood influence in 21yo doesn't kill the house style, one the opposite, they integrated perfectly!

Im actually considering of buying this but have you tried the Glencadam 15? How do you compare that to 10 and 21?

I have had a bottle of the 15, and if memory serves I didn't like it as much as the 10, but more than the 21. However, it's been so long that I'm kind of hesitant to put forward a concrete opinion on it. It's been like 8 years since I had it.

The problem with that is I'd have to change some of them, as I don't agree with a lot of our older scores. It's doable, I suppose.

KZbin is terrible for gaining an overall sense so i think u shld both as a service to ur followers and as a good way to draw more folk into being followers. too many reviewers aren’t even on my radar or fall off it bec so inconvenient to find out what they’ve reviewed and scored in order to judge whether we have similar enuf palates to follow them.

Hi Geoff. Something I've been meaning to ask about Glencadam whiskies. I love the delicate flavours of the 10 and 15 but, to my horror, just two drams of either give me a shocking headache for the whole of the next day. This happens to me in about 1 in 10 whiskies. Interestingly, a Tomintoul whisky did the same thing to me, and they're owned by the same people. Obviously these whiskies don't agree with me on a personal level, but does this ever happen to you? Do you think it's something to do with the distillate or something else that's not agreeing with me? Another headache inducing whisky for me is Deanston 12.

Wow. That sounds like a question better suited for your doctor! However, in my experience, Glencadam hasn't shown any particular tendency to cause headaches with me, nor has any other specific brand for that matter. I'm afraid I don't know what's causing that...

@@marclambert8596 Thanks for the lead. I’ve had some fairly sulfury sherry-matured whiskies and remained headache free, so I tend to agree. I wonder if it’s a tad too much methanol coming from the foreshots of the distillate that’s causing headaches.

The 21 year old does not include any sherry cask maturation. It's bourbon cask only.

Are you sure? The profile is mostly bourbon influenced, but most online sources have this as bourbon and sherry cask matured.

There is epic, then there is Glencadam 21 epic. Takes days to peel back the 21. I'll have to disagree on the aesthetics as the alternative is pop culture USA lets come up with a stupid name to sell a products. Sasquatch Scotch, now you see it, now you don't.
