Glendale firefighters take the climb to overcome any possible fear of heights

Even in a normal year without COVID-19, firefighters in training have to overcome a lot of challenges before putting on the gear and taking that first official call. One of those hurdles is making sure they aren't afraid of heights.
It’s a test every firefighter has to pass in Glendale, and that's climbing a ladder on top of their truck that stretches about 100 feet into the sky.

This isn't as scary as it looks honestly. I used to be terrified of heights, typically around 15-20 feet it would bother me. After doing a 100 foot ladder that fear tuned into excitement. I've climbed a ladder like that maybe 2 or 3 times and I think it's a lot of fun

@@Hvmoudi I'm serious, defeating fears fuels confidence, I used to lock up on short ladders, heights are fun now. You'll learn quickly there's nothing to be afraid of, you'll have a harness on for tall ladders on ladder trucks, the only direction you go is wherever you decide to go.

go up in a 150' articulating boomlift, not the straight mass. the articulating boomlifts with the auto leveling basket will make your heart jump out your chest lmao

Im scared of heights too. Im a medic and all i need is fire academy now. Whats making me think too much about it is the climb. Soo ill take your word if its not too bad. Im slowly getting rid of my fear but its still there

I have a fear of falling I could do that the problem is walking across stuff without a railing or standing near an edge and feeling like ur gonna fall I believe that ladder climb aint the best fear of heights test id trust the ladder and gear 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@ecstrip6691 love heights and the veiw but when it gets risky my body starts shutting down and lose balance iv done the slingshot ride 3 times where it shoots u up in the air 300ft and love it and have climbed big trees but if it includes anything I have to stand on anything high up near the edge of somthing without somthing to grab on to it makes me nervous heights always equal the best veiw i wish I could do the iron working type job that required standing on big beams setting up sky scrapers I say hell ya but my body says hell no

You can still do it. In my opinion having a fear of heights gives you an advantage in training. You'll get over it pretty quick and having that fear while knowing you're safe will give you a rush that makes it fun. I used to have panic attacks on a single story roof, but now tall 100 foot ladders are really fun to me

There are different types of firefighters as well. You don’t have to be the one to climb the ladders you could be someone who goes into the burning buildings to save people that way

@@aydenburris8631 I don’t think I’m the same as you sadly. I don’t fear anything in life at all other than heights and I tried to beat it but it’s just engraved in my heart. I almost died from a panic attack because I forced myself to a high place to face my fears and let me tell ya I tried many many times. As bad as I hate quitters and to quit in general but I think I will stick to the ground.

Why do fire fighters always act like they know everything. It not something that gets you over a fear of heights at all otherwise we would all just climb a big ladder and cure ourselves,! It exposes your fear of heights and then from there you can try and master that fear

They said that because climbing a ladder like that does help to get over it. First time I had to do it the highest I would normally choose to go was about 10 feet. I had to do 100 for a test and by the time I got back down I wanted to do it again. That fear eventually fuels a euphoric rush and makes it enjoyable.
