3 questions: 1) For taste: This or redbreast 27? 2) For investment: This or redbreast 27? 3) How do you imagine the Glenfarclas 35 and even 40 would taste? Could it possibly get better? I see these bottles in some Alberta stores. Gotta think quick and i trust/value your opinions.

I had the Glenfarclas 30 last year at a (rich) friend's house. It was so very good. We spent an hour on our dram -- 30 minutes on the nose alone. In my notes I called it "almost perfect". I agree with you that the Glenfarclas is one of the most affordable quality scotches out there. I love 'em. For me though, mostly due to financial constraints(!), I prefer the freshness, bite, and character of a younger whisky.
@WhiskyWhistle3 жыл бұрын
Impressive story, Brian!! That is amazing. Yeah I feel much the same way. But also that I like 10-21 yo whisky...even down to 3 years old in some cases! I do wonder though if my expendable income increased 10 fold what changes in purchasing would occur. Sigh.. Cheers Brian🥃🥃🥃

For me the sweet spots in the GF range are the 15yo and the 25yo. 15yo because of the added punch from 46%abv and the 25yo (@43%) because of its great balance between sprit character and cask influence. The 30yo and the 40yo are drifting off into tannic bitterness imo. I was fortunate to have visited the distillery and be offered the 40yo free of charge. Yes, that was some years ago... Warning: GF is well known for having serious batch variation issues, so if you want buy a bottle (or 17 😁), make sure that you can sample the actual batch at hand before pulling the trigger.

I've been contemplating which 30YO to get for my 30th. I'm a sherry head so I've been debating between Glenfarclas 30 and Glengoyne 30 but can't find anything helpful online so thanks for this! Happy New Year all the way from South Africa!
@WhiskyWhistle3 жыл бұрын
Hi Graham! Happy New Year!! First off I haven’t had the Goyne 30. Comparing the 25’s of each I would say Glengoyne is more overtly sherried, whereas Glenfarclas is more balanced and complex. I’m guessing the theme will continue for Glengoyne in the 30 year old. If you enjoy both styles it’s a toss up - let your gut feeling make the decision for you!! Cheers🥃🥃🥃🥃

The price was very good in Europe, I paid 188 € (= 293 CAD) for a bottle a few years ago. Now it is approximately 100% more expensive. On the other hand, the 40yo is 3 times more expensive today AND the abv is down from 46% to 43%... 😮

I am with you Mark. I like a lot of different whiskies, but I tend to believe whisky gets better with age. Old books, leather, deep malt are amazing notes much more often present in older whiskies. Cheers and happy new year :)

Do you think it can on par with most 30 year old Scotch whiskies?🤔It's been said that Glenfarclas whiskies aren't that mature, but I'm not sure
@WhiskyWhistle2 жыл бұрын
In maturity, absolutely. The style isn’t as cask focused as say Macallan or Glengoyne or Glendronach or Glenallachie, but I think you get a better look/taste at the wonderful spirit aged 30 years. Let me know how you like it if you try it! Cheers🥃🥃🥃

I find most of those descriptors for old whisky to be cliche. Even the most seasoned Scotch drinkers can't absolutely tell you which whisky is older than which in a blind tasting in my experience. So that being the case, I absolutely find The Sweet spot to be between 12 and 18 years old; it's also the most economical. Happy new year!
@WhiskyWhistle3 жыл бұрын
It’s because the changes/additions/subtractions chemically take the flavour to places that don’t exist in foods. The mind simply relates it to memory. In this case reminds me of chewing the leather pigskin laces on my baseball glove as a child. The first thing that popped into my head! Then the smell in a library of leather bound volumes like old bibles or encyclopedias etc that have cracked with the pages yellowed. It seems like creosol has come even more to the foreground. Love the struck matchiness of Glenfarclas. Disagree with your blind tasting comment. I’m (almost)always able to pick out old from young blind...unless were talking about tropical climate whiskies! For me 18 and up is my jam. But I like everything in terms of age as long as it’s well made. Happy New Year Christopher🥃🥃🥃🥃

Glenfarclas doesn’t peat their whiskey
@WhiskyWhistle3 жыл бұрын
In fact the malt is classicly lightly peated - like many distilleries(except some like Glengoyne whose malt uses hot air to dry), and the water itself runs through peat on the way down Ben Rinnes. Cheers🥃🥃🥃
