Glenmorangie Lasanta 12 REVIEW: Does this sherried Glenmo WORK?

It's a classic today. I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Glenmorangie distillery today. This is their 12 year old Lasanta. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

Great review and spot on! Lasanta, along with Naked Grouse and Dalmore 12 were my favourites when I first started my whisky journey. Soon afterwards though, I got overwhelmed with the sweetness and the simplicity of them. This is a good sipper with friends who are not that in to whisky where you don't have to think about it too much and just let the conversation take over. Cheers 🥃

Appreciate the review. I've skipped this one though owned the majority of the range. People in the know knock Macallan a lot these days (and largely deservedly so) but the regular 12 Sherry cask gives me the prune bomb note that can be hard to find elsewhere. It was in a Hazelburn 13 Oloroso (unfortunately impossible to get) I had a few years ago but I'm glad you've reviewed this because I now know I can just keep passing this one by.

I'd take a Mac Sherry Oak over this one any day. Macallan isn't that bad. They're overpriced and overhyped, but no doubt they make great whisky!

Enjoy your reviews Geoff and this one is spot on. I used to love all these whiskies before I started my real whiskey journey two years ago. Glenmorangie, Glenlivet, Auchentoshan, Tamnavulin etc was all I used to drink and I liked them. However over the last two years I have explored whiskey as it really should be or integrity bottling as Ralfy would say. If I now have any of the fore mentioned whiskies I find them very one dimensional. Keep up the great work 👍

I have not had a Glenmoraige yet; was thinking about ordering the Signet soon. Tho good news! I just bought a Longrow 13 Red & 2 bottles of Kilkerran 8 sherry CS!

Longrow 13 sounds amazing, and that Kilkerran is like the holy grail out here in Taiwan. I've seen the bourbon one, but no sherry. I doubt it would last more than a day on the shelves if it did show up. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on that one! I'll be reviewing the Signet quite soon as well. Cheers man! 🥃

Hi Geoff. I like the profile of this sherry whisky😅. It’s fresh and light. If I want something deep and sweet I prefer port casks. I find some sherry bombs have a 2 minute noodle oily taste? ( I do love 2 min noodles though!). Can you recommend one with a similar profile but higher abv?

Nice review G. If at all I have to go a Glemo it's the Quinta Ruban 14yo. The rest is very average. Signet is very good I'm told but it's way out of my budget.

Hi Geoff, first time I had this it was 46% and it had a 12 on the bottle . Why Glenmorangie dropped the abv on the lasanta and kept the other two at 46% is beyond me. Yes its ok but as you said for the money there’s plenty of choice, eg Glen Allachie 12 , 46 % , N C F and natural colour 👍. As always a good video, slàinte Geoff.

I think this is a very tasty one, not as good as the Glenallachie 12, for example, but I liked it very much. Having a two year of sherry maturation (oloroso+PX) is something to be valued, when there are so many whiskies in the market with a maximum of 6 months of extra maturation. This detail must be in account when evaluating what you are buying. Unfortunately even this bottle is suffering from inflation and be careful no to overpay it.

I agree with you 💯%, I've had bought Lasanta (42$) and Quinta ruban (45$) few times here in Arkansas because the price , bunna 12 is (72$) and Glenallachie 12 (70$) I love them but the difference in price here is almost double, if bunna were 50 or 55 like it used to be , I wouldn't doubt a bit to get it over the glenmorangie ones . Totally agree, the alternative whiskies he mentions are *literally* 60-80% more expensive where I am in the US. You can’t compare a $49 bottle to a $95, isn’t apples to apples.

Like you stated in the video, its not bad. Its certainly not striking nor off-putting. It would be great to see this be reformatted as a NCF, Non-colored, 46% product expression. Then again, Glenmo isn't trying to appeal to the highest of expectations... rather they're shooting for somewhere in the middle, straddling between great quality and okay quality.

I think it's a solid, well-priced example of a Sherry Finished whisky. It would be interesting to compare a ~$60 interpretation to a ~$25 interpretation from Glen Moray ✌️😉

@@Gwhisky Cool. Other than their minimal ABV, there's really little to complain about with their Elgin Classic range. Also, there's something fun (?) about buying a good-quality single malt for under $25. Keep an eye out for the Chardonnay-finished version 👍

I use my Lasanta if I want to add a touch of sherry to another whisky. I would never sip it neat, unless I wanted to verify that statement. On the other hand I would recommend the Glenmo 10 to any lost and bewildered new whisky shopper.

10 is excellent. I prefer it to the finishes myself. Weak abv and all that, but it's a very budget friendly whisky that is honest to the distillate.

Lasanta reminds me of Balvenie DoubleWood 12yo in terms of flavor, and yeah it's fine but not interesting. If let me choose from Glenmo 10yo/Lasanta /Nectar D'or/Quinta Ruban, I will pick classic 10yo, hah. I like Glenmo's spirit style, and I would say the cask influence from other three are too overwhelming.

I agree! I really like the Glenmo house style. The cask finishes are ok, but too loud. The 10 is a simple, clean, pleasant sipper but we get a lot more of the distillate character.

I gave Lasanta a pass. Although it is very well priced in Bulgaria, the presentation and not so flattering feedback have been keeping me away. I can buy Lasanta for roughly 33 euros, but for the same price I can buy also Glendronach 12 yo or Glenallachie 12, which is a no brainer for me. I have had the 14 yo Quinta Ruban and liked it very much. The next Glenmorangie to try will be Nectar D'Or. Both are more expensive than Lasanta, but still very well priced in Bulgaria under 40 euros and IMHO better value than Lasanta. As for an idea for an upcomming review, I'd very much like to hear you oppinion on Highland Park Cask Strength. The second release has been on the market for maybe a month now. It even made it to Bulgaria and I bought a bottle last week, but haven't opened it yet. Cheers!

I would say Lasanta is a common one, Nectar D'Or is interesting and sweetest, and Quinta Ruban is the best of three cask finished. How's the price of HP CS in Bulgaria there?

@@dairyyang5457 The lowest price it can be had for is roughly 51-52 euros. It has not reached the most retailers yet. Saw it on couple of online stores and also in Metro hypermarket chain. Most of the retailers will most certainly put a couple of euros above the lowest price, but I paid roughly 51 euros for my bottle, which is around 4 euros less than what I paid for the previous release one year ago. There has not been a single HP original bottle that I didn't have second thoughts about the price, but I don't have too many of them anyway. This cask Strength edition is still well below the prices of all the "Val-whatevers", Tatoos, Volumes, etc. releases and the presentation is absolutely top notch, so it might pass as relatively good value :) The only HP official bottles I can find in Bulgaria that are cheaper than the cask strength edition are 40% ABV. Cheers!

I tend to buy whisky way faster than I drink it :) I drink some 30 ml 3-4 times a week and have a limit to of not more than 6 opened bottles of whisky at a time. Since I bought the first release last year, there have not been a free slot for another cask strength one in my opened bottles :)

Your 'whisky journey' ? All due respect, I can't imagine you've been at sea too long on that one (legally, anyway.) I watch a lot of these whisky reviews and find it's largely the younger imbibers who tend to talk about 'beginner' whiskies. I'm no beginner, yet I can enjoy simplicity when well executed. This is a well executed sherry finished whisky, both affordable and available. Yeah, fake colored and lacking snob appeal, but a damn fine scotch comparable to far pricier bottles.
