I love the way Glenn acknowledges the audience applause after “With One Look” without breaking character - as if Norma is hearing the applause in her head, then slowly comes back to reality and remembers where she is and who she was talking to. Brilliant acting.

Good observation and yes, she gave me a chill when THIS Norna's audience as distinct from Gloria Swanson's are right there in the same auditorium as she though the film's address to us is also CLEARLY decades powerful;

Thanks for pointing this out. I didn't notice it the first time. Then I saw your comment and watched it again. Yes. she was fabulous. Looking at the way she acted in that scene, I could actually put myself in Norma's shoes and understand how Norma would have felt ....

The beauty of KZbin has allowed me to see Glenn, Patty and Betty and I have to say that Glenn really acted the hell out of this role. She brought so much nuance and emotion to Norma, and although not as strong vocally, I really felt she embodied the character the best.

Your being too kind - her singing was awful. Vocally, the worst Norma i have ever heard..

Every country and production has its own special Norma Desmond. We were honored to have Glenn Close at the London Coliseum for a limited run. She was so special. Also in the UK following the closure of the original London production Faith Brown toured in the show for 18 months. Many of you may never have heard of her and even most folks in the uk only knew her from her TV show in the 1980s. She was mesmerizing , so real as Norma , yet capable of using her skills as an impersonator / impressionist for the surreal , crazy moments. I feel fortunate to have seen both of these ladies in the role.

Brings back vivid memories. I saw Sunset Boulevard with Glenn Close at the Minksoff on a Saturday matinee - April 1995 - Row D Orchestra as I recall. Wasn't sure what to expect, as I had been bored with ALW's big hit CATS at the Winter Garden, but I wanted to see Glenn Close - and in a musical no less. As soon as she appeared onstage, you felt the presence, power, and tragedy of Norma. Glenn Close had disappeared and there was only Norma. Brilliant, moving, I will never forget.

I saw this last weekend with Sarah Brightman playing Norma, and while she was really good, this performance is just freaking incredible. Jeez this lady is talented and just owns the role.

Brilliant musical of a classic, non-musical movie. If you ever saw this live show, then you'd agree: What a tribute. Too bad they never made a film version of this musical. If done well.., it would have been well received.

I get SO emotional when I see this and listen to the recording. As a person who once was deeply in love with a guy and who didn’t love me back as much, when he ….. basically left me, I almost got to be like Norma and was SO SO beaten down that I almost did what she did. BUT, something happened inside of me at the time, that I stopped myself. Whatever that was - inner strength, an angel, god, spirit, thankful for moment in time. Made me a stronger person. today ❤️🙌🏼.

I didn't know she played this role as early as in 1994. I did see this musical in that year, but only from a travelling tour with somebody else play the role of Norma Desmond. I had never seen the movie back then and didn't know and appreciate the story. But since then, the movie has become one of my favourites and I have watched it many times. I was fortunately enough, by chance, to have caught Glenn's performance in 2017. She has become much older then, but her performance was still great. Now, watching this 1994 version of hers, all I can say is, WOW !!!!!

These " performances " come but only a few times in a lifetime. Glenn as Norma. Ron moody as fagin. Kevin spacey/ Ian McKellen Richard 3rd. Patti Lupone / Les miserables. Chita Rivera kiss of the spiderwoman....I was privileged to see Glenn Close in this. A testament to great musical theatre. The unity of all 3 disciplines. .Breathtaking. xx ❤

Glenn Close is wonderful in everything she does. And I love the Billy Wilder movie with Gloria Swanson. But Lloyd Webber’s music is, as usual, computerized, paint-by-numbers crap. Every song sounds like every other song. Imagine what Rodgers & Hart or Cole Porter could have done with this story.
